For any streaming enthusiast, finding the best VPN for Netflix is a holy grail.

No viewer wants to pay the full price for Netflix and get only a small fraction of the total content library available on the giant streaming platform.

It is no wonder that we constantly encounter search queries like:

ULPT Request: Free VPN that works with Netflix. from UnethicalLifeProTips

Best VPN for netflix? from NetflixViaVPN

This led me to prepare a guide on VPNs that enable you to stream all kinds of content no matter which region of Netflix they are available in.

Thus, in this article, I will tell you about the best Netflix VPN out of 124 VPN services we have reviewed over the years.

9 Best Netflix VPNs to Stream Shows from Abroad

There are a lot of VPN services currently operating in the market.

In fact, there are only 9 such providers that are offering VPNs good enough to support high streaming quality, unblock Netflix library from the US (and elsewhere), and slip through the VPN ban.

I tested these VPNs for how well they could unblock five highly demanded regions of Netflix: the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany, since these are the locations with the largest libraries (though US tops them all with the exception of Japan), and routinely receive exclusive titles that are not made available elsewhere until a later date.

Let’s see which of the VPNs made it through these testing criteria.

In order to ensure that a VPN works seamlessly with Netflix, it must have the following attributes:

  1. Grant access to any Netflix region of your choice without restrictions
  2. Bypass VPN detection mechanism of Netflix
  3. Provide fast connections to common server locations used for Netflix streaming

These criteria filter out a lot of VPN apps available out there, since there are few services capable enough to meet all the three requirements above.

1. ExpressVPN – The Top-notch US Netflix VPN

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

ExpressVPN unblocks Netflix in a breeze. It is one of the most preferred options amongst many internet users due to its fast speed and a stable connection.

Using ExpressVPN, you will experience no hassles in the form of any errors or Netflix’s VPN detection denying you access to your favorite content.

In fact, the ExpressVPN recommends performing its built-in speed test after choosing your preferred server location to make sure you are getting the speeds necessary to support high quality streaming.

Testing the VPN service on different regions, I was able to unblock ALL 5 regions (UK, US, Canada, Germany, Australia) with no problems whatsoever.

Here are the test results I obtained after accessing US Netflix via ExpressVPN.

ExpressVPN
I was easily able to access and watch Parks and Recreations via this server.

Parks-and-recreation

Speed:

ExpressVPN offered exceptional speeds during testing. There were no drops in speeds and results showed a stable connection at 28.45 Mbps – pretty sweet right!

2. NordVPN

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

NordVPN has dedicated Netflix-optimized servers, which do not require any special configuration to run the streaming service.

The 5,000+ servers from the provider are more than adequate to support instant Netflix streaming in HD quality.

The provider has a separate page to guide users regarding the most optimized servers for accessing Netflix regions in the most popular regions of the platform.

NordVPN’s servers went through my testing phase with no hiccups at all.

I was able to access content in the US, UK and other regions with their exclusive library, and this whole process of rapid server-switching didn’t take more than 5 minutes.

This is how it worked for me when I connected it to a US sever.

NordVPN-interface

The servers connected instantly and there were was no hold-up.

To confirm if I had accessed American Netflix library via NordVPN, I looked up the show, Person of Interest.

This TV series is only available in the US (according to the list on IMDb). NordVPN let me watch the show in HD quality.

Person-of-Interest-Netflix

Speed:

NordVPN’s speed tests showed a 26.62 Mbps connection, which is more than enough for high quality streaming.

3. Surfshark

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

Surfshark is a new VPN provider in the industry.

However, this new entrant is surprisingly powerful when it comes to passing through Netflix’s proxy detection radars.

Considering Surfshark is relatively new, it offers great server strength. In fact, Surfshark has written a detailed page about popular shows that are only available in certain countries on Netflix and how you can access them with this service.

Here I will demonstrate the use of Surfshark (via US, Dallas server) to watch stream Netflix exclusive shows:

SurfShark App

After connecting, I accessed US Netflix library and looked up the show, Hawaii Five O.

The show was available in the library and I was able to stream it at HD quality.

Hawaii-Five-O-2

Speed:

As you can see in our page on Surfshark performance on Netflix, the service drops connection speed by almost 50%. That may be a problem if you have a slow connection.

Pros
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Smooth access to Netflix
  • Lightweight VPN app
  • AES-256 encryption
  • 24/7 live chat

4. PureVPN

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

PureVPN is another VPN that seems to have no problem accessing Netflix. The service has 2000 servers spread across the globe, allowing any streamer to unblock his or her favorite website. In fact, PureVPN is the top recommended VPN for Netflix.

The VPN enables uninterrupted access to Netflix on all the main server locations. The provider specifically positions its service as ideal for expats or travelers who need to watch shows only available in their home country.

In addition, PureVPN offers built-in ‘Channels’ feature that allows anyone to access American Netflix library anywhere in the world. This is the feature I used while testing the service, which granted me easy passage to streaming titles from all the 5 main regions.

PureVPN-interface

I encountered difficulties connecting with PureVPN. It took more than 2 attempts before it could establish connection with my chosen VPN server.

After logging in to Netflix, I looked up shows that are only available for US subscribers of Netflix.

For testing, I searched The Office. Within a few seconds, Netflix displayed the hit TV show.

The speed result of PureVPN didn’t disappoint at all as you can see below:

5. CyberGhost

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

CyberGhost has completely revamped its service with new server locations and app designs.

Now it offers a dedicated Netflix streaming feature in its apps, which allows users to connect to Netflix using an optimized server out of its impressive network of 3,500+ servers.

CyberGhost is fully capable of unblocking US Netflix and has a detailed tutorial on watching your favorite shows on Netflix with this service.

Testing it for the 5 Netflix regions as I did for other services, CyberGhost didn’t disappoint at all and unblocked all the streams I tried to access.

While testing CyberGhost’s performance on Netflix, I used the built-in streaming feature.

CyberGhost-interface

CyberGhost’s built-in Netflix feature automatically led me to the streaming giant’s homepage on the browser after establishing a connection with its server.

I looked up a show that was only available on US Netflix (Hawaii Five-O) and found the show to be present in the library.

Hawaii-Five-O

Speed:

CyberGhost offered good speeds during testing. The Netflix Mode optimized the overall connection, allowing good streaming speeds and negating any chances of buffering issues.

Pros
  • Built-in Netflix mode
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • 45-day money-back guarantee
  • 3,500+ servers

  • Inconsistent speeds

6. IPVanish

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

IPVanish is a renowned VPN service. Although IPVanish had been blacklisted by Netflix’s VPN detection feature earlier, the provider has regained its ability to unblock Netflix for all popular regions.

However, the provider still does not advertise itself for its Netflix unblocking capabilities and lacks a dedicated Netflix-related page.

Nonetheless, I had a swell experience when I was testing IPVanish for Netflix.

For the US servers, I connected to Boston.

IPVanish-interface

Once the connection was established, I launched Netflix on my browser and looked up a movie, Coco.

Since the film is only available in the US, I was able to access it with this server.

Coco

Speed:

IPVanish performed surprisingly well during speed test as well. The VPN provider offered quick streaming speeds and showed consistent results.

IPVanish Speeds

Pros
  • Unlimited server switching
  • Quick speeds
  • 5 Multi-logins
  • 24/7 customer support
Cons
  • Is bound to US laws and regulations

7. VyprVPN

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

VyprVPN, a product of Golden Frog, is highly reputable in the market and penetrates Netflix’s geo-restrictive defenses with outstanding efficiency.

The network of 700+ servers covers the most sought-after locations for Netflix enthusiasts. Like IPVanish, however, the provider does not offer specific instructions for Netflix use on its website.

VyprVPN passed the test to bypass geo-restrictions across all 5 Netflix regions being considered here, but I did encounter the problem of slowish speeds.

vyprvpn connected

I had Chameleon encryption and NAT firewall enabled during testing. If you face the problem of poor speeds, then I would recommend turning off these features.

That said, VyprVPN is among the few services that work with Netflix and provides great security.

Brain-Games-Netflix

Speed:

As said earlier, VyprVPN did struggle in offering quick speeds. I experienced a drop of almost 50 percent in terms of download speeds.

  • Free 3-days trial
  • Access Netflix without any logging issues
  • 700+ servers

8. Ivacy

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

Ivacy is a VPN service mostly known for its prowess in offering safe and secure torrenting.

That said, the 1,000+ servers of the VPN strategically located across 100+ regions allows Ivacy to evade Netflix’s geo-blocking techniques.

Although Ivacy pitches itself as a solution for gaining access to US Netflix, it surprised me by also giving me access to the other 4 regions when I tested it.

Below, you can see screenshots of my attempt to stream on American Netflix via Ivacy:

Ivacy

After making sure the connection was stable, I searched for the show “The Office”, which only works for the US-based audience of Netflix.

The show streamed smoothly without showing any error or drop in VPN connection.

The-Office

Speed:

The speeds of Ivacy VPN were average on the US server. The download speeds were consistent at 17.25 Mbps, but there was no lag or buffering while streaming.

Pros
  • Stream Netflix from anywhere
  • Keeps you anonymous
  • Internet kill switch
Cons
  • Average speeds

9. StrongVPN

5/5 tested server locations working with Netflix.

  • US Server: working
  • UK Server: working
  • Canada servers: working
  • Germany servers: working
  • Australia servers: working

StrongVPN has an impressive server infrastructure, in spite of the fact that it is only moderately sized, having 650+ servers in 20 countries.

Nonetheless, as it claims on its webpage on Netflix streaming, StrongVPN works smoothly for Netflix, performing well on the 5 regional versions I tested it for.

For demonstration of StrongVPN’s Netflix unblocking power, I looked up Better Call Saul on Netflix after connecting to US server, and streamed several episodes of the series.

Better Call Saul on Netflix

Throughout the testing, the connection remained stable and Netflix did not detect that I was using a VPN.

Speed:

The speeds offered by StrongVPN were also on a scale between average and good. That said, StrongVPN didn’t falter at any time during streaming.

VPNs and Smart DNS Providers that DO NOT Work with Netflix

  2. Ultrasurf
  3. TunnelBear
  4. Keenow
  5. Astrill VPN
  6. Opera
  7. VPN.ac
  8. Hide.Me
  9. iVPN
  10. Avast Secureline VPN

American Netflix Library Compared to Other Netflix Regions

So far, it’s no longer a myth that the American Netflix hosts the largest content library than any other region.

But when you compare it to other Netflix regions, how much is the difference?

To give you an idea why everyone is scrambling after a VPN for Netflix to access the US library, here is a comparison by numbers:

Netflix Region Number of Shows Number of Movies Total
United States 1326 4339 5665
Australia 445 1599 2044
United Kingdom 542 2425 2967
Canada 629 2942 3571
Cuba 596 2430 3026
Brazil 562 2951 3513
Japan 405 1360 1765
Belgium 396 1532 1928
Germany 350 1435 1785
France 387 1541 1928
Netherlands 372 1408 1780
India 201 554 755
Singapore 178 489 667
Albania 33 200 233

As you can see, US Netflix leads other regions by far in terms of the total number of titles.

The closest any other Netflix region comes to the US is Canada.

On the other hand, many Asian regions have the lowest number of Netflix titles.

You can even see discrepancies between European regions, as none of them have the same content library.

Netflix VPN FAQs

Following are the common questions people ask about Netflix VPNs.

How to Watch Netflix with VPN?

Watching Netflix with a VPN is extremely simply that even an idiot could do it.

Here’s how it works:

1. Get a VPN proven to work with Netflix

The following providers have the best deals and have all been tested to unblock Netflix:

2. Install the VPN app

The providers listed above are compatible with a wide range of devices. So visit their webpage, and download the apps for your device. Then, proceed to installation.

3. Connect a suitable VPN server location

Now select a server location where the Netflix content catalog of your choice is available. Grab a few popcorns and enjoy streaming!

How to Unblock Netflix?

Although the process for unblocking Netflix with a VPN is as described in the steps above, you might encounter the following error message in certain cases:

Netflix-Proxy-error

This happens if you are using an online proxy website or a VPN service that has been blacklisted by Netflix.

The only fix to this problem is to use a VPN that has been tested for its ability to penetrate past Netflix’s defense mechanisms.

All the VPNs described in this article are capable of achieving this. As such, you can take your pick from the list above and forget worrying about receiving any proxy errors.

Free VPN Options for Netflix – Do they Really Work?

That is the million dollar question, isn’t it? Sadly, the free VPNs for Netflix that our team tested didn’t work.

Some of them occasionally showed the US library, but upon streaming, the notorious VPN Proxy Error popped up immediately.

This shows that free VPN providers are not reliable for accessing Netflix from any other region.

Netflix Ban on VPNs

Since 2016, Netflix has started to target VPN services with a ban, following pressure from film studios, producers, and distributors.

Many servers of popular VPN services were suddenly denied access to Netflix and some VPNs are still unable to do so.

However, the VPN providers having the right resources and expertise have managed to escape detection by Netflix, thus allowing users to stream their favorite shows without letting geo-restrictions getting in the way.

What is Ideal Speed of a Netflix VPN?

Netflix automatically adjusts the quality of streaming videos depending on your Internet connection.

This is because the company wants to provide users with a smooth streaming experience with minimal interruptions and buffering, and this often means dropping the quality down. Your connection has to be extremely slow, however, for this to happen.

The correspondence between internet speed and Netflix video quality is something like this:

  • 500 Kbps = Minimum quality
  • 1,500 Kbps = Normal quality (lower than 480p)
  • 3,000 Kbps = SD quality (480p or higher)
  • 5,000 Kbps = HD quality (720p or higher)
  • 25,000 Kbps = Ultra HD quality (1080p or higher)

To make sure you get the best quality of videos, you should try connecting to a VPN server that is closest to your actual location.

Some trial and error can also go a long way in helping you find the server that works best for your Netflix streaming needs.

You should also never hesitate to contact customer support with your concern. The customer support of leading providers is sufficiently qualified and prompt in their responses to help you find the right settings for optimum Netflix performance as well as resolve your other queries, as discussed in greater detail on our best VPN services page.

Why Does Netflix Block VPN?

Now that you know about the VPN services that work with Netflix and that don’t, it begs the question, why did Netflix block VPNs in the first place?

The answer to this lies in how content (shows and movies) is delivered around the world. Copyright holders have different deals with different regions for the distribution of their content. This is how they make MONEY! If there is no licensing agreement, there is no content for viewers in that region.

It is the same case with Netflix. Since the American Netflix holds the most number of content titles, users would switch their location by spoofing their IPs via VPN services.

This would mean that copyright holders would be losing money when users would access content that is not supposed to be available in their region. Once they figured out how users were jumping digital fences, they pressurized Netflix into stopping them.

Since Netflix didn’t want to compromise its user base and block actual fee-paying users from using their service, it went after different VPN providers. Hence, the VPN-blocking mechanism of Netflix came into existence.

How Does Netflix Know I’m Using a VPN?

To stop users from accessing a Netflix library outside of their region using a VPN or proxy, Netflix invested heavily into technology that would single out VPN users.

It achieved this through IP blacklisting of different VPN services. Since most VPN services allow users to repeatedly use the same IP addresses shared among various users, Netflix can recognize this pattern to block IPs associated with certain VPNs.

Therefore, if you happen to connect to a VPN server that’s been blacklisted by Netflix, it will automatically deny you access and show the “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy” error.

This is how Netflix finds out if you’re using a VPN.

However, some VPNs have an answer to that. Different providers employ different strategies to turn invisible to Netflix’s vision and escape detection.

These usually involve the rotation of IP addresses to make it difficult for Netflix to identify a pattern.

Another strategy is to use obfuscated servers, which hide the fact that your traffic is moving through a VPN.
Now, let’s move onto the test results for all the 10 working VPNs that experience little difficulty in Netflix’s walls of defenses.

Is it Possible to Unblock American Netflix with a Smart DNS Proxy?

If you had asked this question four years ago, I would have whole-heartedly recommended a Smart DNS proxy over a VPN.

But here’s the kicker:

Many popular Smart DNS proxy services no longer work with Netflix, as seen from the earlier list (Unotelly, Unlocator, and Overplay).

If you still want to try smart DNS, then select ExpressVPN’s Media Streamer service though there is no guarantee it will allow you to watch Netflix and for how long.

In a nutshell, you can’t rely on Smart DNS for streaming Netflix.

Why Do These VPNs Work When Others Don’t?

You might be wondering:

If Netflix is blacklisting a vast number of IP addresses from different VPN servers, how are some providers still working?

This is because the VPNs that are currently working have added new servers in obscure locations for Netflix.

Therefore, all the VPNs I have recommended have the financial and human resources to cope with the VPN blockade and allow their users to access Netflix without facing errors.

How to Change Your Netflix Region?

While the American Netflix is the most wanted Netflix region for viewers, it is possible to access the library of other regions. In order to change Netflix region, you have to make sure the VPN service you selected offers a server in that region.

Once you have done that, follow these steps:

  1. Select a VPN service
  2. Sign-up and download its app on your device
  3. Launch the VPN and connect to a server location of your choice
  4. After establishing a successful connection access the Netflix region
  5. If you can access shows/movies of the particular location, you have successfully changed your Netflix region

Final Verdict

Netflix is nothing short of an addiction and subscribers like me just can’t have enough of it.

Just make sure you choose a service with the speed and ability to bypass geo-restrictions to US and any other popular region of exclusive Netflix content.

That’s literally all you need to do to start streaming your favorite shows right now.

Enjoy Netflixing!
