Yes, NordVPN ‘s split tunneling actually works. A split tunneling feature allows you to split your internet traffic into two different tunnels. One of the tunnels uses your actual ISP internet connection, while the other tunnels run on the VPN internet connection.

NordVPN Speed and Performance – How Fast is NordVPN⭐8.0

NordVPN is quite fast based on our testing. The VPN delivered blazing-fast download speeds on our 100 Mbps internet connection. We tested NordVPN servers across different regions to produce these results. When tested, it offered an average download speed of 85 Mbps.

We’ve broken down the results by region, as shown below. Although NordVPN is not much appreciated for its speed, it exceptionally outperforms many other high-speed VPN providers. It is one of the fastest VPNs that you can use to stream, download, and browse without worrying about ISP throttling your bandwidth.

As detailed in our following NordVPN speed test, the provider was quite consistent in providing stability and decent speeds when we tested it on a 100 Mbps connection in one of our US-based testing labs.

NordVPN connected to the United States of America server:

This was no surprise, considering we were sitting in the same country the server was located in. We received a good download speed of 90.84 Mbps and an upload speed of 82.22 Mbps on its Atlanta server. Just a 9.16% difference in the speed.

We have to admit; this was a surprise. Although we were expecting something similar to the US server response, we never imagined we would get the same speed as my actual ISP connection with a 0% difference in speed. We received a download speed of 100.99 Mbps and an upload speed of 85.08 Mbps on a 100 Mbps internet connection.

NordVPN connected to the United Kingdom server:

Speed is inversely proportional to the distance between you and the server. This was quite true in United Kingdom’s case. With a 21.03% in speed, it was quite alarming. We received a download speed of 78.97 Mbps and an upload speed of 86.84 Mbps on a 100 Mbps internet connection.

NordVPN’s Double VPN Speed Test

When we connected to the Double VPN servers of NordVPN, we experienced almost a 50% drop in speed. Before enabling the Double VPN feature, the maximum speed that we got with NordVPN was 96.92 Mbps. After connecting to its US > Canada server, we managed to get a maximum download speed of 53 Mbps.

It might be because of the distant server, but our assumption was instantly proven wrong when we switched to the Switzerland > Sweden server. To our dismay, we still didn’t witness any significant speed improvement. The maximum download speed that we got this time was 51.14 Mbps.

Speed Comparison : NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark

Like we did in the streaming heading, we have also prepared a small download speed comparison table showing NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark’s download speeds in seven different countries.

Although the Double VPN feature speed results were about 50% of the actual speeds, we still found NordVPN quite decent concerning speed. Don’t forget that you are also getting multiple security features that are not available with other providers. Hence, a small drop in speed is perfectly understandable and acceptable by our standards.

NordVPN performance with other protocols

NordVPN offers varying speeds with different VPN protocols. Of course, its own NordLynx provided the fastest speeds, which is not surprising. We used a 100 Mbps internet connection as our base speed. Here are the speeds we received:

• NordLynx: 91 Mbps download speed and 54 Mbps upload speed
• OpenVPN (UDP): 79 Mbps download speed and 65 Mbps upload speed
• OpenVPN (TCP): 44 Mbps download speed and 35 Mbps upload speed
• IKEv2: 83 Mbps download speed and 77 Mbps upload speed

The older protocols still managed to provide fast speeds comparatively, i.e. IKEv2 provided nearly as good speeds as NordLynx. The lowest speed drop we received was 9%, and the highest was 88%, so the fluctuation is debatable.

On the other hand, OpenVPN (TCP) provided considerably slower speeds. So you’re better off using OpenVPN (UDP). Depending upon your distance from the server, the speed drop will also vary. Only NordLynx and OpenVPN (UDP) gave the lowest speed drop. But the speeds will again vary if you’re uploading large data.

So, all in all, NordVPN is pretty fast; there’s no denying it. In fact, if you’re located close to the connected server, you’ll barely notice the drop in speeds. If it’s further away, you’ll find lagging and buffering issues. Maybe you ought to stick to NordLynx since it provides the fastest speeds.
