Do Surfshark Netflix Work Together? Yes, They Do! [Tested 2021]
Yes, Surfshark can unblock all 16 Netflix geo-restricted libraries that it claims without buffering and error. Also, the pricing of Surfshark is just $2.49/mo, which makes it quite an affordable option for Netflix streaming.
If you’ve ever used Netflix before, you know that its content library varies from country to country. For instance, a show that might be available in the U.S, might not be available in the U.K. This is because Netflix can’t broadcast certain titles in some parts of the world due to licensing issues. This is bad news for Marvel fans because movies like Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and The Avengers are ONLY available on Netflix US.
That being said, despite regional restrictions, the U.S library of Netflix has all shows from all Netflix regional libraries. Even though Netflix subscriptions cost more or less the same throughout the world, people outside the U.S can only watch limited content.
|Netflix US||4593 movies||1157 TV shows||$8.99/mo|
|Netflix UK||1586 movies||442 TV shows||£5.99/mo|
That’s not fair, is it?
Wondering how to unblock Netflix US? Fortunately, there is a way. With the help of a VPN connection, you can connect to a U.S server to watch everything that Netflix has to offer, or you can connect to a VPN server from your home country to stream your favorite local shows even when you travel abroad.
But which VPN should you choose? Surfshark claims to unblock 16 different Netflix libraries, which sounds almost too good to be true. In today’s blog, I’ll put Surfshark to the test and finally answer — “Does Surfshark work with Netflix”? You can Check out more VPN as well.
So without further ado, let’s get started.
Does Surfshark Work with Netflix?
Yes, Surfshark works perfectly fine with Netflix. I tested out 16 different Netflix libraries that Surfshark claims to unblock on its website. Some server locations worked quite fast while others were a bit slow.
But overall, Surfshark is quite consistent at unblocking several highly popular Netflix regional libraries. That’s all because of its powerful server network. Currently, Surfshark offers around 3,200+ servers in about 65 countries. Although not all servers work with Netflix, however, many of them do. Infact both NordVPN and Surfshark work with Netflix.
Which Netflix Libraries Can Surfshark Unblock?
Since Surfshark claims to unblock 16 different Netflix libraries, I decided to put their claims to test. It took me quite a while to perform this test but it was well worth it. Here’s a table with all my findings:

To figure whether Surfshark could actually unblock different Netflix regional libraries, I first made a list of content specifically available in different regions.
I then connected to different server locations to find out whether Surfshark was indeed properly unblocking region-specific Netflix content or not. To add more depth, I also noted down the time it took each server location to start streaming content on Netflix.
Anyways, without further delay, here are the detailed test results:
For Netflix US, I connected to the United States – Latham server. Once connected, I tried streaming “The Bachelor” and it started playing in just 10 seconds. Here’s a screen recording to prove that you can stream Netflix US with Surfshark:
For Netflix UK, I connected to the United Kingdom – Glasgow server. This time I played a region-specific show called “The Fall”. As soon as I hit play, it started to stream Netflix UK in just 8 seconds.

For Netflix Japan, I connected to the “Japan” server location and searched for “The Naked Director”. I have no clue what the show is about, but it instantly unblocked Japanese Netflix and started streaming in 15 seconds.
The South Korean server of Surfshark performed the slowest among all the servers that I tested in this blog, however it did allow me to watch Korean Netflix abroad. When I played “Crash Landing On You”, it took 45 seconds to start streaming.
The Polish server of Surfshark was quite snappy in terms of performance. When I connected to Poland – Gdansk server location and played a show called “The Mire”, it started streaming in just 8 seconds.
Surfshark was also able to unblock the French library of Netflix. To carry out a quick test, I connected to France – Marseille server and searched for “13 Reasons Why”. It started playing in just 7 seconds.
To test out whether Surfshark could unblock the library of Netflix Canada, I connected to the Montreal server and played “Top Boy”. The show started streaming in just 7 seconds.

Performance of Surfshark Netflix Servers
While Surfshark’s ability with Netflix is indubitably strong, there is also the factor of speed to consider. Our latest Surfshark speed tests were performed on a 100 Mbps connection. Unfortunately, Surfshark did not live up to standards set by some of its competitors like ExpressVPN.
The speed we obtained when connected to Surfshark’s US servers was 24.09 Mbps on a test connection of 100 Mbps. This represents a significant drop from the original speed.
However, since the base speed is quite fast, it is still possible to stream in Ultra HD with Surfshark. Of course, for slower networks, you might experience slower speeds which might undermine the quality of your Netflix experience.
It is important to remember though that speed test results should always be taken with a grain of salt as they are highly variable depending on factors that are unique to each user. It is perfectly possible for Surfshark to offer significantly better speeds on your end than what we obtained.
When you are streaming with Surfshark, make sure to enable its CleanWeb feature. It will help you avoid annoying and intrusive ads and provide you a smooth streaming experience.
All things considered, the overall performance of Surfshark for Netflix is still better than most other providers out there.
Device Speed and Compatibility
According to Netflix, streaming speed requirements include:
My speed test showed the all country servers of Surfshark met the recommended internet connection speed of 1.5 Mbs as set by Netflix. All server speeds were around 23-25 Mbps for the required 25 Mbps speed for streaming Netflix in Ultra HD Quality.
Even slow-speed Surfshark servers gave bufferless streaming with no extensive lags. I only had to wait a few seconds before the streaming continued. The longest I had to wait was about 45 seconds to watch South Korean Netflix. But, even then there were no buffering issues, as I was able to stream Crash Landing On You on South Korean Netflix with ease. Video resolution was also good in most of the cases, but it entirely depends upon your internet connection speed.
Can I use a Free VPN for Netflix?
Free VPNs are not a great choice for streaming and we would not recommend using the best free vpn for streaming Netflix. First, free VPNs offer a small server network, and these servers tend to be crowded by users thus providing extremely slow speeds. Meaning, if you are using a free VPN, prepare yourself for a very bad streaming experience with extensive buffering and lags.
Second, Netflix has blocked most free VPNs so you will not be able to access Netflix libraries with free VPN services. Let’s say you do find a free VPN that works with Netflix, you have to be careful as most of them contain viruses and malware.
Similarly, you cannot count on free VPNs to keep you safe as most of them log your online activities and information and then sell it to third-party advertisers. Therefore, the best way to safely access Netflix is to use a VPN like Surfshark that follows a strict no-logs policy.
Surfshark Netflix Not Working? Try These Fixes
Netflix constantly blocks VPNs to prevent people from viewing content that is outside their geo-location. Netflix geo-restricts content due to licensing agreements and copyrights. That is why only a few VPNs work with Netflix including Surfshark. If you are using a VPN that does not work with Netflix, you will see Netflix proxy error.
If you’re trying to use Surfshark with Netflix and you just can’t get it to work, you can check out these quick troubleshooting fixes listed below:
Smart DNS and Trust DNS
If you facing Netflix proxy error with Surfshark, you can always opt for its SmartDNS and Trust DNS features. This way you won’t have to hide your IP address, rather reroute your DNS requests for accessing different Netflix libraries.
SmartDNS does not encrypt your online traffic like a VPN, therefore your ISP can see which websites you are visiting. If you want to enjoy Netflix shows on the big screen like Apple TV, gaming consoles, Smart TVs, etc. then SamrtDNS is a great choice for you. It will spoof your geo-location and let you access any country’s Netflix library.
Choose the Nearest Server
If you are unable to access Netflix, then choose the nearest server location and try again. Make sure you log out of the Netflix app or website you want to access before changing the servers on Surfshark and then log back in.
Use Streaming Protocol
- Open the “Advanced Settings” tab from the Surfshark menu
- Select a different protocol such as IKEv2 or PPTP
- Log out of the Netflix app or website you want to visit again and close your browser/app
- Restart browser or app and visit the desired website
Use Wired Connection
Wireless connections tend to perform slower especially when you are connected to a VPN. A wired connection, on the other hand, provides lower latency and higher download speeds. So, try accessing the website you want to open through a wired connection with Surfshark running on it.
If your router has been running continuously for a while, try restarting it to clear its cache. This simple trick can improve your speeds and allow you to open apps and websites you couldn’t get past earlier.
Other Benefits of Surfshark
Surfshark is perfect to use with Netflix. But the VPN has more tricks up its sleeves than just unblocking streaming services. For instance, Surfshark works well for torrents and offers strong 256-bit encryption for secure P2P filesharing sessions. You can also unblock Amazon Prime with Surfshark.
In addition, Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections and supports various platforms. You can easily download its apps for Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and a bunch of other devices. Users can also set up Surfshark on Firestick, Kodi, and Roku without much hassle.
Reddit Reviews about Surfshark
In order to get some real-time user experiences about Surfshark on Netflix, we went to Reddit and explored various threads. The reddit reviews were absolutely amazing as most users recommended using Surfshark as the best VPN for Netflix.
As you can see most users have opted for Surfshark as it easily unblocks Netflix libraries of different countries. It works great on various devices including browsers, iPhones, Android Phones, and PCs. Meaning, with Surfshark you can enjoy Netflix streaming in different countries on pretty much any device.
Can Surfshark decrease my Netflix streaming speed?
Yes, as the speed test result above shows, Surfshark will reduce your streaming speed. However, Surfshark has amazing servers that can support HD quality content on internet speed as low as 5 Mbps. So the speed drop you get with Surfshark won’t be so drastic to keep you from enjoying Netflix. Also, the closer the VPN server is to your geo-location, the better your speeds will be. Therefore, some degree of slowdown is natural. But, it shouldn’t be a huge problem especially if you have a high-speed internet connection.
Will I still be able to access US Netflix if I’m traveling abroad?
Yes, you can, but only if you use a VPN like Surfshark for Netflix, which has servers located in the US.
What If Surfshark Stops Working with Netflix?
If Surfshark stops working with Netflix, you can try switching to a different server location. You can also contact Surfshark’s customer support for finding out servers that are compatible with Netflix. If that doesn’t work, check out our Surfshark not working guide for troubleshooting tips.
Will a VPN help if Netflix isn’t available where I live?
Yes, if Netflix is not available in your country, then you can use a VPN to change your geo-location to a country where Netflix is available. For instance, if I want U.S Netflix, I would connect to a U.S server.
Can I use my existing Netflix account with VPN?
Yes, you can use your existing Netflix account for watching other Netflix libraries with a VPN. When you connect to a different country server, it will automatically redirect you to that country’s Netflix library when you log in.
