Does Surfshark Work with Netflix in 2020?
Yes, Surfshark can unblock all 16 Netflix geo-restricted libraries that it claims without buffering and error. Also, the pricing of Surfshark is just $2.21/mo, which makes it quite an affordable option for Netflix streaming.
If you’ve ever used Netflix before, you know that its content library varies from country to country. For instance, a show that might be available in the U.S, might not be available in the U.K. This is because Netflix can’t broadcast certain titles in some parts of the world due to licensing issues.
That being said, despite regional restrictions, the U.S library of Netflix has all shows from all Netflix regional libraries. Even though Netflix subscription cost more or less the same throughout the world, people outside the U.S can only watch limited content.
That’s not fair, is it?
Fortunately, there’s a workaround. With the help of a VPN, you can connect to a U.S server to watch everything that Netflix has to offer, or you can connect to a VPN server from your home country to stream your favorite local shows even when you travel abroad.
But which VPN should you choose? Surfshark claims to unblock 16 different Netflix libraries, which sounds almost too good to be true. In today’s blog, I’ll put Surfshark to the test and finally answer — “Does Surfshark work with Netflix”?
So without further ado, let’s get started.
Does Surfshark Work with Netflix?
Yes, Surfshark works perfectly fine with Netflix. I tested out 16 different Netflix libraries which Surfshark claims to unblock on its website. Some server locations worked quite fast while others were a bit slow.
But overall, Surfshark is quite consistent at unblocking several highly popular Netflix regional libraries. That’s all because of its powerful server network. Currently, Surfshark offers around 3,200+ servers in about 65 countries. Although not all servers work with Netflix, however, many of them do.
Which Netflix Libraries Can Surfshark Unblock?
Since Surfshark claims to unblock 16 different Netflix libraries, I decided to put their claims to test. It took me quite a while to perform this test but it was well worth it. Here’s a table with all my findings:
|Netflix Libraries||Working (Yes/No)||Performance|
|Netflix US||Yes||10 seconds to play|
|Netflix UK||Yes||8 seconds to play|
|Netflix IN||Yes||16 seconds to play|
|Netflix IT||Yes||12 seconds to play|
|Netflix NO||Yes||9 seconds to play|
|Netflix DE||Yes||17 seconds to play|
|Netflix AU||Yes||25 seconds to play|
|Netflix JP||Yes||15 seconds to play|
|Netflix KR||Yes||45 seconds to play|
|Netflix PL||Yes||8 seconds to play|
|Netflix FR||Yes||7 seconds to play|
|Netflix CA||Yes||7 seconds to play|
|Netflix TR||Yes||14 seconds to play|
|Netflix SE||Yes||8 seconds to play|
|Netflix SG||Yes||6 seconds to play|
|Netflix NL||Yes||6 seconds to play|
To figure whether Surfshark could actually unblock different Netflix regional libraries, I first made a list of content specifically available in different regions.
I then connected to different server locations to find out whether Surfshark was indeed properly unblocking region-specific Netflix content or not. To add more depth, I also noted down the time it took each server location to start streaming content on Netflix.
Anyways, without further delay, here are the detailed test results:
For Netflix US, I connected to the United States – Latham server. Once connected, I tried streaming “The Bachelor” and it started playing in just 10 seconds. Here’s a screen recording for proof:
For Netflix UK, I connected to the United Kingdom – Glasgow server. This time I played a region-specific show called “The Fall”. As soon as I hit play, it started streaming in just 8 seconds.
For Netflix India, I connected to India – Mumbai server and searched for “Dehli Crime”. When connected to the Indian server, It only took Netflix 16 seconds to play the show.
To test out the Italian Netflix library with Surfshark, I connected to the Italy – Milan server. The show I tried to play this time was called “Luna Nera”. Once I clicked on the play button, the show started streaming in just 12 seconds.
To test out the Norwegian library of Netflix, I searched for a show called “Ragnarok”. When I clicked on the play button while connected to the “Norway” server, the show started playing in only 9 seconds.
Surfshark also managed to unblock the German library of Netflix quite easily. For testing purposes, I connected to Germany – Frankfurt server and searched for a show called “Criminal: Germany”. This time the show started streaming in 17 seconds.
To test out the Australian library of Netflix, I connected to the Australia -Perth server and searched for a show called “Away”. The show started streaming in 25 seconds. Here’s video proof of that:
For Netflix Japan, I connected to the “Japan” server location and searched for “The Naked Director”. I have no clue what the show is about, but it started streaming in 15 seconds.
The South Korean server of Surfshark performed the slowest among all the servers that I tested in this blog. When I played “Crash Landing On You”, it took 45 seconds to start streaming.
The Polish server of Surfshark was quite snappy in terms of performance. When I connected to Poland – Gdansk server location and played a show called “The Mire”, it started streaming in just 8 seconds.
Surfshark was also able to unblock the French library of Netflix. To carry out a quick test, I connected to France – Marseille server and searched for “13 Reasons Why”. It started playing in just 7 seconds.
To test out whether Surfshark could unblock the Canadian library of Netflix, I connected to the Canada – Montreal server and played “Top Boy”. The show started streaming in just 7 seconds.
For Netflix Turkey, I searched for a local show called “Resurrection: Ertugrul” while connected to the Turkey -Istanbul server. When I clicked on the play button, the show started streaming in just 14 seconds.
Netflix was easily able to unblock the Swedish library of Netflix. Once I got connected to the Sweden server location, I was able to stream “Kon-Tiki” in just 8 seconds.
To test the Singaporean library of Netflix with Surfshark, I connected to the Singapore server location and searched for “Hainan Kopi Tales”. The show started to stream in just 6 seconds.
Finally, I tested out the Netherlands Netflix library with Surfshark. I searched for a kids show called “64 Zoo Lane” in it started streaming in only 6 seconds.
How to use Netflix with Surfshark?
- Head over to the official site of Surfshark
- Download and Install the VPN app on your preferred device.
- Log in to the app and choose your nearest US server or any preferred server location.
- Open the incognito window or clear the cache of your web browser.
- Visit the Netflix app or website and start streaming your favorite content.
In the following gif, you can see me streaming US Netflix with Surfshark’s St. Louis server. Therefore, Surfshark is certainly a reliable choice for unblocking Netflix.
Performance of Surfshark Netflix Servers
While Surfshark’s ability with Netflix is indubitably strong, there is also the factor of speed to consider. Our latest Surfshark speed tests were performed on a 100 Mbps connection. Unfortunately, Surfshark did not live up to standards set by some of its competitors like ExpressVPN.
The speed we obtained when connected to Surfshark’s US servers was 24.09 Mbps on a test connection of 100 Mbps. This represents a significant drop from the original speed.
However, since the base speed is quite fast, it is still possible to stream in Ultra HD with Surfshark. Of course, for slower networks, you might experience slower speeds which might undermine the quality of your Netflix experience.
It is important to remember though that speed test results should always be taken with a grain of salt as they are highly variable depending on factors that are unique to each user. It is perfectly possible for Surfshark to offer significantly better speeds on your end than what we obtained.
All things considered, the overall performance of Surfshark for Netflix is still better than most other providers out there.
Surfshark Netflix Not Working? Try These Fixes
If you’re trying to use Surfshark with Netflix and you just can’t get it to work, you can check out these quick troubleshooting fixes listed below:
Flush your DNS
If you are unable to access some websites or streaming channels through Surfshark, try flushing your DNS through the Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key and type “cmd” in the search
- Right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator
- In the cmd, type ipconfig/flushdns, then press Enter key
This will clear your DNS cache, which often resolves this problem. Furthermore, by following a few simple steps you can get rid of it.
Choose the Nearest Server
If you are unable to access Netflix, then choose the nearest server location and try again. Make sure you log out of the Netflix app or website you want to access before changing the servers on Surfshark and then log back in.
Use Streaming Protocol
- Open the “Advanced Settings” tab from the Surfshark menu
- Select a different protocol such as IKEv2 or PPTP
- Log out of the Netflix app or website you want to visit again and close your browser/app
- Restart browser or app and visit the desired website
Use Wired Connection
Wireless connections tend to perform slower especially when you are connected to a VPN. A wired connection, on the other hand, provides lower latency and higher download speeds. So, try accessing the website you want to open through a wired connection with Surfshark running on it.
If your router has been running continuously for a while, try restarting it to clear its cache. This simple trick can improve your speeds and allow you to open apps and websites you couldn’t get past earlier.

Other Benefits of Surfshark
Surfshark is perfect to use with Netflix. But the VPN has more tricks up its sleeves than just unblocking streaming services. For instance, Surfshark works well for torrents and offers strong 256-bit encryption for secure P2P filesharing sessions.
In addition, Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections and supports various platforms. You can easily download its apps for Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and a bunch of other devices. Users can also set up Surfshark on Firestick, Kodi, and Roku without much hassle.
Can Surfshark decrease my Netflix streaming speed?
Yes, as the speed test result above shows, Surfshark will reduce your streaming speed. However, Netflix has amazing servers that can support HD quality content on internet speed as low as 5 Mbps.
Will I still be able to access US Netflix if I’m traveling abroad?
Yes, you can, but only if you use a VPN like Surfshark for Netflix, which has servers located in the US.
Surfshark for Netflix is one of the best solutions you can find in the market if you are tired of Netflix library discrimination. With its outstanding discounts and a 30-day money-back guarantee, Surfshark deserves a chance if you’re a Netflix fan outside of the US.
