CyberGhost Review 2021
CyberGhost is easily among the top 5 VPN providers in the industry. But why isn't it at the top? Are there any flaws you should be aware of. Find out in this updated review.
CyberGhost is a Romania-based VPN provider offering its services in 89 countries through 6800+ servers globally. Kape Technologies bought CyberGhost in the year 2017. The company was formerly called Crossrider Plc.
In this CyberGhost review, I found its various features like no logging, safe jurisdiction, compatibility, free trial, Internet Kill Switch, Netflix, and Torrenting support, refund policy, 7 devices multi-login, and most updated CyberGhost 8 version equal to the task.
What’s more, the company admirably took the initiative to donate 10% of its sales until March 30th to the Coronavirus relief fund to help the world recover from the devastation wreaked by the pandemic.
Overall, CyberGhost is one of the reliable VPNs available in the industry. The service offers interactive apps that offer various attractive features to users. You can avail of its three-year pricing plan at the cost of $2.25/mo on a monthly basis.
Based on the above-explained attributes, I recommend CyberGhost in case you wish to protect your digital whereabouts through an affordable VPN brand.
My Rating Criteria
I have rated CyberGhost based on my own 9 steps rating criteria that include:
- Jurisdiction – Where is CyberGhost based?
- Security – How secure is CyberGhost?
- Leaks – IP, DNS & WebRTC Leak Tests
- Servers– Exists in all parts of the world
- Speed – How fast is CyberGhost VPN?
- Streaming – Netflix, Torrenting & Kodi
- Compatibility – Supports All Operating Systems & Devices
- Pricing – Is it Expensive or Cheap?
- Trustworthiness – GDPR Compliance, Trustpilot Ratings & Support
Jurisdiction – Where is CyberGhost based?
CyberGhost is located in Romania, far away from the reach of fourteen Eyes. The country is not a part of any eyes alliance and does not share its users’ information with any other country whatsoever.
Security- How secure is CyberGhost?
CyberGhost is one of the most secure VPNs in the industry. One of the core reasons for which you select a VPN as your online protector is your security. There are different methods through which a VPN service ensures your security and confidentiality, but the most significant among them all is encryption.
Encryption is sort of a backup plan, which secures your confidentiality.
The protocols that CyberGhost supports are L2TP, IKEv2, and OpenVPN. Although there are other protocols available that alternative providers offer, such as PPTP and SSTP, it focuses on the latest and most secure protocols, i.e., OpenVPN and IKEv2. CyberGhost also uses the WireGuard protocol, which is something not a lot of VPNs offer. However, the WireGuard protocol is only available for Linux operating systems.
As far as its encryption goes, CyberGhost delivers military-grade 256-bit encryption that protects your crucial information next level. CyberGhost uses this encryption standard in combination with the 4096-bit RSA key and SHA256 authentication.
Does CyberGhost have a Kill Switch?
CyberGhost allows you to remain anonymous even when it suddenly stops working. It comes with a built-in Kill switch feature which I find quite useful. This feature is enabled by default within the CyberGhost apps. When your VPN connection abruptly drops for any reason, your internet connection does not work either. It is surely a win-win situation for anyone looking to secure their privacy.
Compatibility with TOR (Enjoy Optimum Level of Anonymity)
When I reviewed CyberGhost in detail, I figured out that you can both TOR and CyberGhost in parallel. By doing so, you can achieve the desired extent of anonymity. If you live in any of repressive countries like China, Iran, Russia, and others, the said feature becomes a blessing in disguise for you.
CyberGhost Smart DNS
CyberGhost now offers Smart DNS settings to enable geo-restriction bypassing on devices that don’t support VPN apps. For instance, your Smart TVs and gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation probably have no built-in support for VPN, but you still need a way to deal with geo-restrictions.
This is where CyberGhost’s Smart DNS will come in handy by allowing you to simply change DNS settings to hop over the geo-fencing standing in your way.
CyberGhost “Ad Blocking” (Needs Improvement)
Unfortunately, the ad-blocking feature of CyberGhost does not come up with the expectations of users. It does not work on HTTPS websites too. However, you can use the above advantage on HTTP sites. The ad-blocking feature is workable on Windows, Mac, and iOS devices.
What CyberGhost is currently lacking is a feature just like NordVPN’s CyberSec, which is also an ad/malware blocking feature that checks a real-time block list of websites that are known for hosting malware, spyware, trackers, or other harmful software. So when our DNS server receives your request to enter a specific site, CyberSec quickly checks its address against the list of possible threats and decides whether to allow the access. If you are interested in knowing about the other features in which NordVPN defeats CyberGhost, then don’t forget to check CyberGhost vs. NordVPN.
Overall, CyberGhost is an efficient brand security-wise. It has no logging policy along with safe Romania jurisdiction that makes your information secure and anonymous. It does not leak your IP address and compatible with Netflix, torrenting, and the Tor browser as well.
No Logs Policy
Many VPN service providers offer excellent package plans in exchange for affordable prices; yet, they cannot be considered as feasible options because they do not ensure your privacy.
On the other hand, few VPN service providers ensure your privacy by offering concrete privacy and log policy. You might be thinking, does CyberGhost keep logs or not? For your convenience, I tell you one thing categorically.
CyberGhost VPN, with its no-logging policy, is an excellent VPN to consider in this regard.
Leaks – DNS, IP, WebRTC & Virus Tests
CyberGhost does not leak your IP, DNS, or WebRTC data online. However, the service did not pass the virus test with excellence. According to CyberGhost DNS test results, the provider offers a better web page uploading feature. Surprisingly, VPN connection time has not much improved, as I would have liked.
Still, I hope the service would enhance its performance in this regard too in the near future.
Similarly, I went through IP leak tests that also included IPv4 and IPv6 DNS leak tests along with IPv4 and IPv6 WebRTC leak tests.
The VPN officially claims that it provides DNS and IP leak safeguard features by default. I was impressed to note that the provider has improved its performance to another level in this area.
I checked its Windows setup file through VirusTotal to see if the service reveals any virus or not, but unfortunately, the app exposed one malware during the testing.
Servers – Exists in all parts of the World.
The numbers of servers and their geographical dispersion are some of the crucial factors to consider before buying a VPN service.
The more geographically scattered the servers are, the more easily you can bypass geo-restrictions on content. Hence, with a VPN, you can access content (websites, social networking platforms, streaming links, and even TV shows) being anywhere – from anywhere.
This VPN offers 6800 geographically scattered servers in 89 countries at the time of writing this review. Some of these regions include the U.S, U.K, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Hong Kong, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, and many more. CyberGhost also has 50+ VPN servers in Romania.
Is CyberGhost good for Torrenting?
CyberGhost is a popular option among users who have a thing for torrenting downloads. There are many CyberGhost servers dedicated to torrenting.
For best performance and security, you should use these servers that are available in the “For torrenting” tab.
Speed – How fast is CyberGhost VPN?
CyberGhost speeds fall on the higher end of average. In our latest speed tests, CyberGhost delivered reasonably fast speeds when measured on a 100 Mbps base Internet connection:
|Server location||Download speed||Upload speed||Pings|
|Australia||45.14 Mbps||87.25 Mbps||166 ms|
|Canada||67.17 Mbps||80.09 Mbps||218 ms|
|Germany||63.67 Mbps||64.5 Mbps||141 ms|
|Hong Kong||72.47 Mbps||73.25 Mbps||256 ms|
|India||69 Mbps||75.55 Mbps||222 ms|
|Italy||54.67 Mbps||64.44 Mbps||273 ms|
|United Kingdom||58.51 Mbps||71.09 Mbps||148 ms|
|United States||73.41 Mbps||73 Mbps||255 ms|
|United Arab Emirates||77.88 Mbps||80.15 Mbps||240 ms|
You can observe that the consistency in speed between CyberGhost servers is not that strong. Some performed remarkably well, such as UAE (77.88 Mbps), while others were quite low on the speed spectrum, such as Australia (45.14 Mbps).
Overall, CyberGhost offers decent but not outstanding speeds.
Streaming – Does it Work for Netflix?
Yes, CyberGhost supports Netflix.
While reviewing CyberGhost, I explored that the brand has added another feather in its cap by offering Netflix US unblocking feature. Furthermore, the service provides an exclusive Netflix mode in its app that allows you to watch your favorite TV shows or movies anonymously.
To provide their users appreciable streaming speeds, they have added highly optimized Netflix servers in their armory. In a nutshell, CyberGhost has strongly emphasized its users’ video streaming experience, as further elaborated in our dedicated guide on using CyberGhost for Netflix.
Compatibility – Supports All Operating Systems & Devices
CyberGhost is compatible with all the leading platforms.
You can use this VPN on different operating systems and platforms such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, etc. You can even use CyberGhost on browser extensions, routers, gaming consoles, Amazon Fire TV, Smart TVs, Android TVs, Apple TVs, and on a bunch of other devices. Speaking of FireStick, here’s how you can set up CyberGhost on your FireStick device if you’re curious.
Experience CyberGhost Newest Version 8
I was surprised to know that CyberGhost has upgraded its version from 7 to 8. At present, you can install the latest version of CyberGhost on all your iOS devices straightaway. In order to get its impressive 1-day free trial feature on iOS devices, you have to download the CyberGhost app first.
In addition, you can set up the brand on Windows and other operating systems by following the below-mentioned steps:
- Once you have logged into your account, go to the “My Devices” option
- Add a new device of your choices like Windows or Mac, Android, and others
- Select the “Download now” option after adding your preferred device
- Wait for a few moments to complete the downloading process
- You can begin with the installation process when you are done with downloading procedure
Hence, you can experience the hidden benefits of CG8 hassle-free.
CyberGhost 8 Windows Client
CyberGhost offers an interactive windows client to its users. Through download tabs, you can explore different features instantly. Hence, you can accomplish your media streaming cravings to another level.
Likewise, an appealing screen provides you clear information about your VPN connection status straightaway. As a result, you can access geo-blocked streaming services from your preferred locations hassle-free. If you evaluate CyberGhost Pro in detail, you can get awareness regarding the servers list along with user load and ping rates.
The above-said client offers OpenVPN UDP and OpenVPN TCP protocols. However, you will not find the port selection feature. Still, you can experience app protection and Wi-Fi protection benefit. Besides, you can avail yourself of various features, including 24 hours free trial through CyberGhost 8 Windows client.
CyberGhost 8 macOS Client
CyberGhost 8 macOS offers a multitude of features, such as 24 hours free trial to its users. My review reveals that it delivers Wi-Fi protection and split tunneling benefits for subscribers. This is the reason it looks more compelling than other VPN services’ macOS clients do.
CyberGhost 8 Linux Client
The same goes for Linux clients, as you can experience various features while using your preferred operating system. The service enables you to set up a custom connection on your Linux devices.
Kodi (Works with the famous media platform)
Kodi is a complete streaming service with everything for everyone. However, the problem with Kodi is that certain add-ons are geo-restricted. For instance, add-ons such as NBC and ABC are only accessible in the United States. Therefore, to bypass these restrictions, you need a specific Kodi VPN service.
CyberGhost for Kodi will allow you to access any content from anywhere with ease. Similarly, it will also free you from any kind of internet censorship placed on Kodi. Speaking of Kodi, here’s how you can set up CyberGhost on Kodi.
Aside from Kodi, what I love about CyberGhost is that it works exceptionally well with Roku as well. During my testing, I found it super easy to set up CyberGhost on a Roku device.
If you’re facing any issues with any of these apps, here are some fixes to apply if you find CyberGhost not working.
Pricing- Is it Expensive or Cheap?
CyberGhost is rightly considered one of the cheapest VPNs.
There are four fundamental package plans offered by the provider:
You can sign up for CyberGhost monthly plan at the cost of $12.99. When you subscribe to its annual plan, you can save a handsome amount of bucks as you need to pay $3.99/mo only. Similarly, you have to pay $3.49/mo if you avail of its two-year plan. But the best plan, in my opinion, is the 3-year plan which costs $2.25/mo.
With each package plan, you get unlimited bandwidth, unlimited traffic, 6,800+ servers, an anti-fingerprinting system, and 7 simultaneous connections. This is a refreshing change from the earlier pricing plans offered by the VPN service.
Previously, you only had two options. Select either a Premium or Premium Plus account. However, with the new packages, you get all the features no matter how long you wish to subscribe. As per CyberGhost free VPN review, the brand does not offer a free spp. However, users can get a CyberGhost 1-day free trial benefit.
Dedicated IP Address
CyberGhost provides dedicated IP addresses from the five (6) following countries:
- New York, United States ($5.00/mo)
- London, United Kingdom ($5.00/mo)
- Manchester, United Kingdom ($5.00/mo)
- Paris, France ($5.00/mo)
- Frankfurt, Germany ($5.00/mo)
- Montreal, Canada ($5.00/mo)
Diversity in payment methods offered is one of the essential characteristics to explore while reviewing a VPN service provider. It is like providing a convenient transaction process to the users.
This VPN has improved its payment options from yesteryear and now offers a wide range of payment methods. New users can subscribe to the service through credit cards, PayPal, and even bitcoins.
45-day Money-back Guarantee
The 45 day period for claiming a refund is a fairly long duration. The majority of the providers in the industry offer either a weeklong refund guarantee or none at all. As such, CyberGhost is ahead of many providers when it comes to pricing and money-back guarantees.
However, the 45-day refund policy is only applicable to its yearly, 2-year, and 3-year pricing plans. The monthly plan restricts the money-back guarantee to only 14 days of purchase. If you’re not satisfied with the VPN for any reason, you can claim a refund and cancel your CyberGhost subscription, as explained here.
It is very important to carefully inspect and confirm the refund policy of the VPN provider you will go with. You clearly don’t want to get associated with a provider such as TunnelBear that has a very vague refund policy and offers refunds on a case-to-case basis. If you subscribed to their service and decided not to continue, then there’s no 100% guarantee that you will receive your funds back. Although TunnelBear has a vague refund policy, It’s fully capable of going toe-to-toe against top-tier VPN providers such as CyberGhost. Learn more about their comparison in CyberGhost vs. TunnelBear
Trustworthiness – GDPR Compliance, Trustpilot Reviews & Support
CyberGhost follows GDPR guidelines in the right way. Therefore, CyberGhost is included in the list of GDPR compliant VPNs. This is because they have made their data collection procedure quite transparent.
CyberGhost Trustpilot Reviews
Based on 11,191 reviews, you can assume CyberGhost has successfully found its feet in the VPN industry since 84% of users have rated them excellent. Likewise, the provider has received an excellent 4.8 stars out of 5 stars rating overall.
Customer support is a make-or-break situation for any VPN service. If you are using a VPN service that delivers various ways to solve your queries timely, it is a blessing in disguise.
You can include CyberGhost in the list of VPN services that try their level best to come up with the expectations of their users. Here is the list of different options CyberGhost offers to users:
- Guides and FAQs
- 24/7/365 days Live Chat
- Software and other Tutorials
CyberGhost’s reliability stems from the fact that the service offers extensive guides and FAQs for the assistance of users regarding its usage and installation.
If you are still not satisfied, then you also have the option to create a ticket by submitting a request to get the answer to your troubleshooting questions accordingly.
During my conversation, the customer service representative calmly responded to every question I asked despite bragging about “Why I should buy their service,” as most service providers do.
In short, this VPN has excellent customer and tech support, and they will respond timely to all your concerns.
Live Chat (Available 24/7)
Customer support is an important attribute for any service provider. In the VPN industry, however, good and responsive tech support is hard to find. CyberGhost is remarkably one of the few providers offering great support 24/7 with low responsive time.
Software and Tutorials Provided
The provider offers a highly impressive client for various platforms. The software runs smoothly on Windows along with other operating systems and platforms such as Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS. The software is easy to use and does not occupy much space in your hard drive.
CyberGhost offers tutorials or guides for different platforms, just like other VPN service providers. It also used to operate an official forum where users came, interact, and share their concerns. Unfortunately, the forum has been abandoned now and is no longer in use.
CyberGhost is one of the fewest VPNs that publish transparency reports on a regular basis that you can find here. These reports have the following parts:
- DMCA complaints
- Malicious activity flags
- Police requests
In 2021, the company received 40,473 DMCA requests, 3,164 malicious activity flags, and 4 police requests, none of which were complied with since the provider adheres to a no-logging policy.
Alternatives to CyberGhost
If you’re unsatisfied with this VPN provider, you can check these alternatives as well with similar features.
Do I Recommend CyberGhost?
Yes, I recommend CyberGhost due to various reasons. Now concluding this CyberGhost review, it is safe to say that CyberGhost is a capable VPN service that serves as an excellent alternative for those who currently seek a VPN. This service also presents feature-rich package plans in exchange for affordable pricing.
Moreover, you can use the service for 24 hours to check the performance on your desired devices free. What I liked about CyberGhost was its GDPR compliance feature. As a result, users can get information about their data collection and its processing hassle-free.
Not to forget that CyberGhost unblocks US Netflix and has friendly customer support up its sleeves. Therefore, you can consider subscribing to the service to watch your US Netflix TV shows and other media content.
Based on the above analysis, I would give CyberGhost 4.1/5.0 stars rating overall.
