Server Network – How many servers does PrivateVPN offer?

PrivateVPN has 200+ server locations in 63 countries, including the US, UK, Europe, the Asia Pacific, the Americas, the Middle East, and Africa. Thus, you can easily enjoy the privacy and protection offered by PrivateVPN, whether travelingin USA or lounging at home.PrivateVPN-Servers-in-USA

PrivateVPN servers divided by continent:

Continent Number of Countries
North America 4
Oceania 2
Africa 2
Asia 11
Europe 38
South America 6

It has servers in many different countries, but the overall server count is pretty low. Despite the low server count, the VPN does well in covering important geographical locations. The reason behind PrivateVPN having servers in every inhabited continent despite being a relatively small player is its use of virtual servers.

A virtual server is a server that appears to be located in one country but is physically located in another. PrivateVPN utilizes virtual server locations, allowing them to offer servers in more countries compared to many other VPNs. Approximately 13% of PrivateVPN’s server locations fall under this category, where the physical server is situated in a different country than the IP address it provides.

For instance, our investigation revealed that PrivateVPN’s server in South Korea is actually housed in a data center in the US. Connecting to a virtually located server can potentially impact your internet speed, especially if you assume you are connecting to a nearby server when, in reality, it is situated on the other side of the world.

To address this concern, we would appreciate it if the PrivateVPN app clearly indicated which server locations are virtual and which ones are physically located. In contrast, some other VPN services, including top-tier ones like CyberGhost, are transparent about this distinction.

Still, due to its small yet global presence, you can use PrivateVPN servers to access a variety of geo-locked content. Here’s the PrivateVPN server list and a few of its US servers:

privatevpn-servers-in-USA

Have a look at the US servers of PrivateVPN.

If you experience any connectivity issues, see this detailed troubleshooting guide on PrivateVPN not working in USA.

Speed and Performance – Is PrivateVPN fast in USA?

PrivateVPN claims to be the best fastest VPN provider in the USA, boasting global servers optimized for ultra-high-speed connections with low latency. Users can expect unmatched speeds, ensuring an exceptional internet experience from any location. Elevate your online activities with PrivateVPN’s commitment to top-tier speed and performance.

Speed is primarily dependent on which encryption protocol you prefer to use. Generally, lower encryption results in higher speeds and vice versa on PrivateVPN. In our tests, we found that OpenVPN TAP was the fastest protocol in most cases.

Based on our PrivateVPN speed tests in USA, the servers provide an average download speed of 86.5 Mbps. We tested its speeds using 9 different server locations and were quite impressed. PrivateVPN proved to be quite the VPN for providing exceptional downloading, streaming, and uploading speeds.

For instance, on one of PrivateVPN’s Australia servers, we received a download speed of 72.38 Mbps and an upload speed of 67.36 Mbps on our 100 Mbps internet connection.

privatevpn-speed-test-in-USA

PrivateVPN speeds on its Australian server.

We also tested one of PrivateVPN’s UK servers. We received a download speed of 86.84 Mbps and an upload speed of 94.86 Mbps on our 100 Mbps internet connection.

privatevpn-speeds-in-USA

We found PrivateVPN’s UK server speeds quite satisfactory.

Here’s a brief table of the test results:

Server location Download speed Upload speed Pings
Austria 72.38 Mbps 67.36 Mbps 261 ms
Canada 92.92 Mbps 78.64 Mbps 282 ms
Denmark 87.75 Mbps 70.65 Mbps 137 ms
France 92.17 Mbps 71.54 Mbps 128 ms
Greece 76.59 Mbps 65.48 Mbps 294 ms
Italy 93.25 Mbps 84.58 Mbps 127 ms
Netherlands 86.84 Mbps 80.69 Mbps 128 ms
UK 88.42 Mbps 79.57 Mbps 134 ms
USA 89.59 Mbps 74.59 Mbps 212 ms

Based on our tests, on the US server, PrivateVPN’s download speeds only dropped by 12%, whereas the maximum speed drop using the furthest server to our location was just 24%. Overall, we found the speeds were quite reliable, so you can download PrivateVPN without any reservations.

From the console, you have the flexibility to select the desired protocol (TCP and UDP, L2TP, PPTP, TUN, TAP) and OpenVPN encryption method (AES-128/256-CBC/GCM). While the available list may not be ideal, as we would prefer to have WireGuard support in the app and note that PPTP is considered insecure and has been abandoned by most VPNs, it still offers you greater control over OpenVPN compared to some other providers.

Security and Privacy – Is PrivateVPN Safe in USA?

PrivateVPN is a VPN service that prioritizes simplicity while maintaining a high level of security. It offers extensive customization options for encryption levels and provides a range of tunneling protocols. The service strictly adheres to a no-logs policy and incorporates a reliable kill switch feature to prevent any potential data leaks.

By using PrivateVPN, you can enjoy excellent security features that ensure your online activities remain private and anonymous. Moreover, it serves as an excellent VPN service provider for secure streaming and torrenting, offering a safe and protected environment

PrivateVPN is safe as it provides the finest encryption and tunneling protocols in USA. It offers the highest encryption level, i.e., 2048-bit with AES-256. It causes no IP or IPv6 leaks. It also provides access to 5 protocols, including OpenVPN (UDP and TCP), L2TP, IPsec, PPTP, and IKEv2.

Security – Encryption and Protocols

PrivateVPN ensures robust security measures through its implementation of military-grade encryption. Utilizing the AES 256-bit cipher, along with SHA256 and 2,048-bit RSA keys for authentication, PrivateVPN employs some of the most advanced encryption systems available.

These measures make it highly challenging for hackers to decipher your communications through brute force methods, ensuring the protection of your sensitive data from cybercriminals and potential surveillance by governments.

When it comes to VPN protocols, PrivateVPN prioritizes the use of OpenVPN with UDP protocol as the default choice. This protocol is renowned for its combination of speed, security, and broad compatibility. However, PrivateVPN offers a comprehensive selection of other tunneling protocols as well, including:

  • OpenVPN over TCP, which provides increased reliability compared to OpenVPN UDP and offers compatibility with a wider range of websites. If you encounter difficulties loading a website while connected to OpenVPN TCP, switching to UDP may resolve the issue.
  • L2TP/IPsec, often combined due to L2TP’s weaker encryption on its own. While it offers better security than the outdated PPTP protocol, it may result in slower speeds compared to OpenVPN. L2TP/IPsec is popular among iOS devices due to its compatibility.
  • PPTP, an older protocol that is mostly obsolete but can still be useful for connecting on outdated operating systems or mobile devices. It offers fast speeds but lacks robust security, making it unsuitable for high-risk online activities. However, it can be suitable for low-risk activities that require high speeds, such as streaming.
  • IKEv2, a popular choice for iOS and Android mobile devices. It is specifically designed to maintain a seamless VPN connection even when the device switches between cellular and WiFi data. This capability addresses the unique challenge faced by mobile phones, making IKEv2 a preferred option for mobile devices.

With PrivateVPN’s focus on encryption and a range of protocols, you can rest assured that your online activities are safeguarded with top-notch security measures while enjoying flexibility and compatibility across various devices.

Does PrivateVPN have a Kill Switch?

Yes, PrivateVPN does have a Kill Switch feature. It is a full-system kill switch, which means that if the VPN connection disconnects, the feature blocks all applications from accessing the internet. PrivateVPN believes in providing universal protection to its clients, considering it the most effective approach to safeguard their privacy and security.

It protects your real IP from being leaked by disconnecting you from the internet if your VPN connection drops. Cybercriminals count on your neglect to achieve their nefarious goals. As it happens, the VPN connection often drops, and Netizens continue to browse without realizing something is wrong.

This is where the Kill Switch comes in. It kills your internet whenever the VPN fails to remain connected. And with PrivateVPN, this feature is enabled by default.

During our testing, we checked out this feature by connecting to a website while switching servers, and the page didn’t load until we were successfully connected to the VPN. That’s how we knew the kill switch was working well.

privatevpn-protocols-in-USA

Application Guard

Because a simple kill switch is not enough, the application Guard allows you to configure which application should be terminated when a VPN connection drops. It is a useful tool that can be customized according to your preference.

Security Tools

These are some of the security tools offered by PrivateVPN:

  • Kill switch
  • Proxy
  • IPv6/IPv4 leak protection
  • DNS/WebRTC leak protection
  • Obfuscation (StealthVPN)

Does PrivateVPN Keep Logs?

No, PrivateVPN doesn’t keep logs. Although it is based in Sweden, a part of the 14-Eyes Alliance jurisdiction, the VPN makes it very clear through its privacy policy that it does not collect or log any traffic. It is wholly committed to keeping anonymity and protecting the privacy of its clients.

This means that it does not collect information on your browsing history. It is clearly stated in PrivateVPN’s privacy policy that it does not collect information such as activity logs, browsing history, traffic destination, DNS queries, and more.

privatevpn-privacy-policy-in-USA

Still, PrivateVPN’s safety and security can be subject to certain considerations. It is important to note that PrivateVPN’s policy has not undergone independent verification through an audit conducted by a reputable company or through a public court case. Many other VPN providers engage reputable firms to conduct audits on their policies, which helps validate their adherence to those policies.

While it is understood that PrivateVPN is a smaller company, it is hoped that they will undergo such verification processes in the future. However, it is important to acknowledge that the company cannot control the occurrence of a court case that could further verify its policy.

Despite the absence of independent verification, it is worth noting that PrivateVPN enjoys a positive reputation and is generally trusted to handle user data responsibly. While the lack of external validation may raise some concerns, the company’s overall track record and reputation contribute to a level of trust in its commitment to data security and privacy.

Leaks – Does it leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?

No PrivateVPN didn’t leak any IP, DNS & WebRTC information. Despite connecting to PrivateVPN’s Australia server, we did not find any leaks. Have a look right below:

IP and DNS Test

We ran IP and DNS leak tests by connecting to its Australia server, and PrivateVPN did not leak our actual IP address. It showed us the IP address assigned by the VPN service. You can observe the results in the screenshot below:

privatevpn-ip-leak-test-in-USA

PrivateVPN successfully hid our real IP address

WebRTC Test

We also conducted a webRTC leak test by connecting to an Argentinian server of PrivateVPN. As you can see in the screenshot below, the results showed that we were using an Argentinian IP address instead of our actual IP address:

PrivateVPN-WebRTC-Test-in-USA

PrivateVPN didn’t leak our webRTC info.

Virus Test

We also checked if there were any viruses on its Windows client with the VirusTotal website’s help. We found only 1 error, but that was not the virus we found. Here is the screenshot:

The PrivateVPN setup file had a bug but it was a harmless one.

Streaming – Does PrivateVPN work with Netflix outside USA?

Yes, PrivateVPN works well with Netflix outside USA. It is one of the best VPNs for streaming easily. You can unblock major streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, YouTube TV, and many more.

PrivateVPN recently made the decision to remove its dedicated streaming servers from its app, claiming that all servers now have the capability to work for streaming purposes.

However, it is worth noting that there were instances where PrivateVPN’s regular servers failed to unblock certain streaming services. In such cases, we had to resort to connecting to the dedicated IP servers provided by PrivateVPN. These dedicated IP servers assign users an exclusive IP address, making it more difficult for streaming services to identify and block them.

While these dedicated IP servers consistently worked for streaming, it is important to mention that they are not available in all locations.

One notable drawback of using PrivateVPN for streaming is its limited device compatibility with TV-connected devices. While PrivateVPN offers dedicated apps for Fire TV and Android TV, it lacks a Smart DNS feature for Apple TV and game consoles.

Furthermore, there is no router app available for using PrivateVPN with Roku and Chromecast devices. These limitations can restrict the seamless streaming experience on certain devices.

Still, during our tests, PrivateVPN’s New York server performed particularly well. Other servers worked just as well for unblocking libraries from Spain, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, & more. All in all, PrivateVPN easily managed to unblock 13 Netflix libraries.

privatevpn-unblock-netflix-us-outside-USA

PrivateVPN’s New York server performed particularly well at unblocking Netflix

We were also able to use HBO Max through PrivateVPN:

privatevpn-is-best-vpn-for-hbo-max

Even with a server network, this small, PrivateVPN offered a lag-free connection

Generally, we could watch hour-long shows without any issues. Although some servers may get overcrowded due to high demand, you might have a hard time streaming titles in HD.

Is Private VPN Good For Torrenting?

PrivateVPN is a suitable choice for torrenting due to its support for P2P traffic. To engage in torrenting activities and download files using torrenting clients, it is necessary to connect to PrivateVPN’s Dedicated IP/Torrenting servers. By doing so, you can enjoy a secure and reliable torrenting experience while maintaining your privacy.

PrivateVPN is good for torrenting in USA as it supports P2P sharing. It performed quite well on all our P2P performance and security tests. Furthermore, PrivateVPN offers AES 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, a strict no-logs policy, port forwarding, and DNS leak protection, making it easier for you to torrent various files.

According to our experience, PrivateVPN rerouted our data packets where torrenting is safe to be carried out. For instance, countries like Netherlands and Switzerland. It also reroutes data packages through multiple other locations, ensuring it’s impossible to be tracked. We could easily download a 1.5 GB file within 6 minutes through PrivateVPN while using uTorrent.

However, you’ll need to connect to specifically dedicated servers for the torrenting to be successful.  After coming under fire from copyright agencies, many VPN services have abandoned their support for Torrents. In this bleak scenario, PrivateVPN stands head and shoulders above the rest of the providers.

Compatibility – Apps and Supported Devices

PrivateVPN is compatible with most operating systems and devices. It offers dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, Kodi, and even Routers. It supports 10 simultaneous connections with a single subscription.

privatevpn-compatibility

Furthermore, the PrivateVPN app is quite familiar all across the platforms. The only difference is PrivateVPN offers an automatic kill switch with only its Windows app. Other apps don’t offer a kill switch, which is disappointing.

For setting up PrivateVPN on your Linux, you’ll need to follow manual setup tutorials. Since you can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously the VPN is a good choice for your entire family.

The best part about PrivateVPN is that it offers exclusive apps for many devices. Unfortunately despite being a streaming VPN it doesn’t come with a Smart DNS feature. As a result, PrivateVPN is not compatible with gaming devices like PS4 and Xbox.

So you’ll have to install PrivateVPN on a router manually and then connect it to your gaming console. You can also go through PrivateVPN’s router setup tutorial to avoid running into any possible errors. Speaking of routers, the following are the router devices that work with PrivateVPN:

  • ASUS RT models
  • DD-WRT
  • Synology
  • Linksys
  • Tomato
  • pfSense
  • QNAP

Although some VPNs may struggle due to FireStick’s VPN-detection techniques it is not an issue for FireStick. Because of this flexibility, you can install PrivateVPN on FireStick in USA in just a matter of minutes. We tested multiple servers; the US, UK, and Australia and they all worked fine for us to stream Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Optus Sport.

You can also learn about configuring PrivateVPN on Kodi and Roku in USA through our detailed guides.

Installation of Apps and Ease of Use

PrivateVPN is compatible with most commonly used operating systems including Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS

Windows and Mac:

The user interface, installation procedure and offered features for both the Windows and Mac versions are largely the same. The setup hardly took a minute to download. We installed the app and customized the setup as per our needs.

Log in to PrivateVPN with our credentials and viola! It took us a total of 5 minutes to set it up on Windows. Please note we were using the latest version of Windows which we think helped speed up the process.

The user interface may have looked a little bit outdated at first however once you familiarise yourself with it, you get used to it. We found the app fairly easy to use even if it was lacking a certain sleekness in the UI. One of the interesting factors about the UI included how it offered a “Simple View” and an “Advanced View.” Something you only find in premium VPNs.

On Windows, selecting a server is a more straightforward process as the PrivateVPN app provides a visual representation of server ping and applies color codes accordingly. By connecting to the server with the lowest ping, users can experience faster speeds. However, on Mac, the server list appears blank without any indication of the proximity between the user and the servers.

Once you click on the three dashes (≡), you can explore the settings menu. You’ll see various features like protocol, encryption, kill switch, Stealth VPN, and more.

privatevpn-ui-in-USA

We could easily navigate through PrivateVPN’s app on Windows.

iOS and Android:

PrivateVPN offers straightforward and user-friendly iOS and Android apps. With a simple interface, users can easily connect or disconnect from the VPN using the prominent on/off button on the home screen.

However, it is worth noting that PrivateVPN’s mobile apps lack exclusive features designed specifically for mobile usage. There is no dark mode interface, integration with the Shortcuts app on iOS, or availability of widgets for both iOS and Android platforms. Similar to the desktop apps, the significant difference in the mobile apps lies in the Android version, which includes server ping information.

Unlike the desktop apps, the mobile apps do not offer a distinct ‘simple’ or ‘advanced’ view. Users can access the VPN settings by simply tapping on VPN Settings. We recommend enabling the kill switch from this section immediately after downloading the app, as it is not activated by default.

We found out that PrivateVPN’s iOS app doesn’t have a kill switch. So if you intend on using PrivateVPN for your iPhone, you might need to explore other VPNs.

In summary, PrivateVPN’s mobile apps are among the most basic offerings among leading VPN services. Without further development efforts dedicated to integrating with the mobile devices they are built for, PrivateVPN may fall behind its competitors in terms of features and functionality.

Linux:

Connecting to a PrivateVPN server on Linux can be an arduous task, as the VPN lacks a dedicated Command Line Interface (CLI) or Graphical User Interface (GUI) app for Linux.

To establish a connection with PrivateVPN on Linux, users must rely on OpenVPN certificate and key files. This process can be complex and time-consuming, further compounded by PrivateVPN’s outdated 12-step walkthrough. When testing on Ubuntu 22.04, we encountered difficulties as the instructions primarily referenced labels and options that either no longer exist or have been renamed. Additionally, if you wish to connect to multiple servers, you must repeat these 12 steps each time.

Ideally, we would appreciate it if PrivateVPN dedicated effort to providing comprehensive Linux support. Even a CLI app similar to ExpressVPN would offer a more user-friendly experience. Other VPNs within a similar price range, such as Surfshark, offer fully-featured Linux apps that are as effortless to use as their Windows and Mac counterparts.

All in all though, we liked our experience of using this VPN as most of the apps were easy to use and navigate. So, PrivateVPN’s a good option for amateur VPN users.

Bypass Censorship

In this PrivateVPN review in USA, we also analyzed whether PrivateVPN is capable of bypassing censorship in countries with restrictive laws or not.

Does PrivateVPN work in China?

Yes, PrivateVPN works in China. In fact, it is among the safest options that work in China because of PrivateVPN’s Stealth VPN mode. PrivateVPN offers a server in Hong Kong – China route which will help you bypass the geo-restrictions easily.

PrivateVPN has a “Stealth mode” feature that helps it work in China by adding obfuscation to the connection, making it harder for the Great Firewall to detect the VPN’s encrypted traffic.

Although we haven’t tested the VPN in China, the provider claims that its L2TP protocol tends to work more effectively in China since OpenVPN is heavily monitored and restricted by authorities on the mainland. Moreover, obfuscation features such as StealthVPN are usually designed to fool China’s Great Firewall (GFW) by disguising VPN traffic as normal HTTPS traffic.

While no VPN can guarantee functionality within China, PrivateVPN is one of the best candidates for bypassing the GFW.

Customer Support

PrivateVPN, according to Reddit, has decent customer support. You can contact their staff using 24/7 Live Chat support, Email, FAQs, and Tickets. Its ‘Getting Started’ section has all the tutorials you will find for your preferred devices and platforms. Although it doesn’t have a direct phone line, you can call for help.

The following table lists different possible methods of obtaining customer support and if PrivateVPN offers them or not:

Support Option Availability in PrivateVPN
24/7 Email Support Yes
Email Support via Online Form Yes
Live Chat Support Yes
Online Resources Yes
24/7 Live Chat Support No

Tutorial Videos No

The response time is good, and the staff is willing to solve users’ problems. Even going as far as to address your ‘PrivateVPN not connecting’ issues.

Although we didn’t appreciate receiving solutions to our queries in inbox when we were asking on live chat. However, PrivateVPN gets the benefit of the doubt in this section.
