Surfshark, without a doubt, is faster than a lot of VPNs. However, when I conducted my latest Surfshark speed tests, I found out that its downloading speeds were not as impressive as its uploading speeds.
However, in terms of real-world performance, Surfshark is fast and you might not even notice it running in the background.
To present you with accurate and comprehensive speed test results for Surfshark, I used my 100 Mbps internet connection and performed extensive testing on nine (9) different servers of Surfshark.

Surfshark’s in-depth speed test for 2021
In order to get an idea of how Surfshark would perform on various different servers, I connected to nine (9) different server locations as I mentioned earlier. Testing all servers, however, would be impossible for anyone as Surfshark offers more than 1700 servers worldwide. Anyways, here’s how my testing went.
1. Australia – Perth
With my 100 Mbps connection, Surfshark’s downloading speed suffered majorly. With only a ping of 132 ms, I still only managed to get a download speed of 25 Mbps. This is a significant drop in my actual speed. However, my upload speed remained almost unaffected. Even with Surfshark connected, I managed to get an upload speed of 93.25 Mbps.
2. Canada – Montreal
With the Montreal server, things didn’t improve much. I still couldn’t manage to get past the 25 Mbps mark. To be more precise, with the Canadian server, I managed to get a download speed of 25.17 Mbps, an upload speed of 92.09 Mbps, and pings of around 265 ms.
3. Germany – Frankfurt
With the German server, my download speed improved a bit, however, only barely. At this moment, I believe they might have a cap on download speed. With the Frankfurt server location, I managed to get a download speed of 25.67 Mbps, an upload speed of 92.5 Mbps, and 117 ms pings.
4. Hong Kong
With the Hong Kong server location, I managed to get a download speed of 25.67 Mbps, an upload speed of 96.59 Mbps, and 264 ms pings. Again, you can’t notice much improvement.
One of the first things I wanted to do when I got Surfshark was to test out its speeds on long-distance server locations. When I connected to the India server, I managed to only get a download speed of 25 Mbps, an upload speed of 93 Mbps, and pings of around 211 ms.
6. Italy – Milan
With the Italian server of Surfshark, I managed to get a download speed of 25.67 Mbps and an upload speed of 95.67 Mbps. As for latency, I managed to get around 263 ms pings.
7. The United Kingdom – London
After Italy, I jumped to yet another European location. While connected to the United Kingdom, London server, I managed to get a download speed of around 25.5 Mbps, an upload speed of 91.09 Mbps with pings maxing at 139 ms.
8. The United States – New York
With the New York server, my download speed even dropped below the 25 Mbps mark. At max, I managed to get a download speed of around 24.09 Mbps and an upload speed of around 87.5 Mbps. As for pings, it reached to 251 ms.
9. United Arab Emirates
Last but not least, I tested the speeds of Surfshark while connected to a server in the Middle East. With the UAE server, I managed to get a download speed of 24.92 Mbps. As for upload speed, I was again impressed to see it reach 91.75 Mbps. Oh and my pings maxed out at 234 ms.

More Speed Test Results
So let’s address the elephant in the room. Surfshark’s downloading speeds are not the best. During my extensive testing, I just couldn’t find any server that could offer me downloading speeds above 25 Mbps. This couldn’t be possible under normal circumstances unless Surfshark is using a hidden cap on download speeds.
As for upload speeds, Surfshark blew me away. From all the nine (9) server locations I tested, no server degraded my speeds by more than 10%. That’s truly phenomenal.
If we talk about real-world usability experience, I would say that Surfshark’s speeds didn’t bother me at all. I was still able to stream in HD quality, play games without too much latency, and even download torrents relatively quickly.
Overall, you can expect Surfshark to take a toll on your downloading speeds, however, if you’re using a fast internet connection, you should not experience sluggish performance or connection drops.
