Surfshark’s in-depth speed test for 2020

In order to get an idea of how Surfshark would perform on various different servers, I connected to nine (9) different server locations as I mentioned earlier. Testing all servers, however, would be impossible for anyone as Surfshark offers more than 1700 servers worldwide. Anyways, here’s how my testing went.

1. Australia – Perth

With my 100 Mbps connection, Surfshark’s downloading speed suffered majorly. With only a ping of 132 ms, I still only managed to get a download speed of 25 Mbps. This is a significant drop in my actual speed. However, my upload speed remained almost unaffected. Even with Surfshark connected, I managed to get an upload speed of 93.25 Mbps.

2. Canada – Montreal

With the Montreal server, things didn’t improve much. I still couldn’t manage to get past the 25 Mbps mark. To be more precise, with the Canadian server, I managed to get a download speed of 25.17 Mbps, an upload speed of 92.09 Mbps, and pings of around 265 ms.

3. Germany – Frankfurt

With the German server, my download speed improved a bit, however, only barely. At this moment, I believe they might have a cap on download speed. With the Frankfurt server location, I managed to get a download speed of 25.67 Mbps, an upload speed of 92.5 Mbps, and 117 ms pings.

4. Hong Kong

Wrapping up!

So let’s address the elephant in the room. Surfshark’s downloading speeds are not the best. During my extensive testing, I just couldn’t find any server that could offer me downloading speeds above 25 Mbps. This couldn’t be possible under normal circumstances unless Surfshark is using a hidden cap on download speeds.

As for upload speeds, Surfshark blew me away. From all the nine (9) server locations I tested, no server degraded my speeds by more than 10%. That’s truly phenomenal.

If we talk about real-world usability experience, I would say that Surfshark’s speeds didn’t bother me at all. I was still able to stream in HD quality, play games without too much latency, and even download torrents relatively quickly.

Overall, you can expect Surfshark to take a toll on your downloading speeds, however, if you’re using a fast internet connection, you should not experience sluggish performance or connection drops.
