- Subscribe to a reliable VPN. I recommend using ExpressVPN.
- Download and install it on your device, which can range from Windows and macOS to iOS and Android platforms.
- Connect to a US server with the desired content.
- Make sure your IP address matches the server region you are connected to.

How to Use ExpressVPN for Netflix – Video Tutorial
To use ExpressVPN to watch Netflix, follow the steps in my video tutorial. In the video, I demonstrated how to access content exclusive to American Netflix by connecting to the San Francisco server location.
Get Netflix with ExpressVPN’s Dedicated IP:
ExpressVPN’s Dedicated IP feature gives you a private, exclusive IP address you can use alone. It’s the perfect solution for those seeking to overcome CAPTCHA challenges, enjoy uninterrupted access to services, and secure their digital life.
With a dedicated IP, you can confidently connect to work networks or personal accounts without worrying about shared IP conflicts, all while maintaining the high-level security you trust from ExpressVPN.
Why isn’t ExpressVPN Working with Netflix – Troubleshooting Steps
When addressing issues with ExpressVPN not working with Netflix, it’s important to know that the platform uses advanced methods to detect and block VPNs
If ExpressVPN isn’t working with Netflix, the platform has likely detected and blocked its server. In my tests, Netflix temporarily blocked ExpressVPN’s New York server, showing a proxy error.
To fix this, switch to a different server, use the Lightway protocol, and clear your browser cache. If the issue persists, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Try a Different Server
You can change the server you are connected to by switching to another one. Follow the steps given below, and in these steps, you will also learn how does ExpressVPN work with Netflix easily:
- Launch the ExpressVPN app and click the Hamburger icon (☰) in the left corner.
- Click on VPN Locations and then All Locations.
- Select any server from the country you’d like to access.
- Within seconds, your server will be switched from the existing one to the recently selected server.
For example, if you’ve been using the US – Los Angeles server and Netflix blocking ExpressVPN server, opt for any other US server like New York or Santa Monica and enjoy unrestricted access to US Netflix.
Switching to a different server would provide another IP address that Netflix wouldn’t block. This way, you can continue streaming your favorite content without any issues. ExpressVPN and Netflix are the best combination if used correctly.
For your convenience, I tested multiple ExpressVPN servers to change the Netflix region. Here are the best servers you can use for the following libraries:
| Netflix Libraries | ExpressVPN Servers |
|---|---|
| Netflix US | New York, Miami, New Jersey – 3, San Jose, and Atlanta |
| Netflix Germany | Frankfurt – 3 |
| Netflix India | India (via Singapore) |
| Netflix Australia | Melbourne and Brisbane |
| Netflix UK | East London and London |
| Netflix France | Marseille |
| Netflix Canada | Montreal and Vancouver |
| Netflix Japan | Tokyo – 2 |
| Netflix Italy | Cosenza |
| Netflix Spain | Barcelona |
Once you connect to any of these servers for your desired Netflix countries library, refresh your browser/relaunch the Netflix app, and enjoy using duo of ExpressVPN Netflix.
Double Check your IP Address
If you’re still facing issues with the ExpressVPN Netflix combination not working, I suggest it’s time to look at your IP address. If your selected location is closer to yours, it might cause trouble accessing a Netflix library. However, here’s a quick fix: disconnect from the server and reconnect!

After checking, reconnect to your ExpressVPN server.
Use MediaStreamer
If you’re unable to find a working US server of ExpressVPN, then you need to use MediaStreamer. ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer feature is a SmartDNS service that doesn’t require you to pay additional costs.
MediaStreamer circumvents Netflix’s geo-blocks by replacing the DNS address from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) with an ExpressVPN DNS server in the United States. Per my tests, this was more difficult for Netflix to identify than a regular VPN connection.
Truth be told, my research concluded that MediaStreamer is a much more reliable option for accessing Netflix. However, it won’t encrypt your online traffic or conceal your IP address.
- Disconnect from your ExpressVPN server and sign in to ExpressVPN’s website.
- On the left, click on DNS Settings. Click on Register my IP Address and ensure you’ve enabled the Automatically Register my IP Address option.
- Change the DNS address of your device with ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer DNS address. You can now access American Netflix.

ExpressVPN provides its users with unique MediaStreamer IP addresses for effective Netflix streaming.
With MediaStreamer, you can enjoy a VPN connection on devices that do not natively support VPNs. You can easily unblock restricted Netflix libraries by using ExpressVPN on Roku, Smart TVs, Xbox, PS4, Kodi, and more.
Clear Your Browser’s Cache
If switching servers doesn’t resolve the issue, your browser’s cache may be causing Netflix to block ExpressVPN.
Netflix stores various files in your browser’s cache for smoother service operation. Unfortunately, this cache may also contain cookies with ExpressVPN login details and user IP addresses. Even if your device uses ExpressVPN’s IP address, Netflix may still deny access based on this cached information.
Clearing your browser’s cache is straightforward, but the method can vary slightly depending on your browser and operating system. Be prepared to re-enter your login information on Netflix after clearing the cache.

Follow these steps to clear stored caches and cookies from your browser.
Flush Your DNS and then Access Netflix
If a leaking IP address is not the culprit, you might want to ensure you’re not leaking your DNS. A leaking DNS can also block you from accessing Netflix. To fix this issue when watching Netflix, you can flush your DNS. Here’s how you can do it yourself:
- Hit the Windows + R keys simultaneously.
- Click on Run, type Command Prompt, and hit Enter.
- Next, type ipconfig/flushdns in the command prompt and hit Enter.
- You should see this: ‘Windows IP Configuration Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache’
Note: Once you’re all done, you can run an online DNS leak test on dnsleaktest.com to be extra sure.
Disable the Threat Manager on ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s Threat Manager is a powerful tool for safeguarding your online privacy. By default, it’s deactivated, but if you use it frequently, Netflix might detect a lack of communication with specific DNS servers, leading to suspicions of unusual activities.
To address this, disable the Threat Manager and attempt to access Netflix using ExpressVPN. Remember to reactivate it once you’ve completed your Netflix session.
Change to the Lightway Protocol
If you’re still figuring out how to make ExpressVPN Netflix work together again, try switching to another VPN protocol – preferably Lightway.
The protocol settings can sometimes interfere with the VPN settings, causing a minor glitch. However, this can be solved by choosing a different protocol.
ExpressVPN’s Lightway UDP protocol is my top recommendation as it tested to be super-reliable for getting around Netflix’s geo-restrictions. When compared to other protocols, Lightway also offers optimized speeds for streaming Netflix.
Here’s how you can change the protocol in ExpressVPN’s app:
- Launch ExpressVPN’s app and tap on the hamburger menu (☰). Then, click Options.
- Tap on Protocols and choose Lightway (UDP).

Lightway allowed us to stream US Netflix in 4K playback quality without any lags.
Check Your Proxy Settings
Another thing you can try is to focus on your device. If you’re using a Windows computer, navigate to your control panel and look for proxy settings. Modify these settings to either auto-detect proxy” or select do not detect proxy.” This will help resolve any clashes the computer might create with your VPN.
Disable IPv6 on Your Router
On the other hand, if you are using a Smart TV, gaming console, or other device that requires the use of SmartDNS, You will find that disabling IPv6 on your router will often resolve issues of VPNs not working correctly.
This is the most frequently used fix when you cannot stream Netflix through ExpressVPN on your Android TV, gaming console, or Apple TV.
Check for Leaks
While it’s rare for ExpressVPN to have data leaks, my continuous daily testing has never revealed any. However, if you suspect data leakage, you can take measures to mitigate it. One option is to disable IPv6 on your device, and another is to disable WebRTC in your browser settings.
My test showed that ExpressVPN could successfully conceal my DNS requests and didn’t give away my actual location. This helped me develop an unrestricted connection to Netflix without any hindrance.

ExpressVPN servers ensure my actual IP address remains out of sight so that Netflix can identify my true location.
Restart Your Device
One of the most enduring and influential troubleshooting methods for computers and related devices is the age-old solution of simply restarting the device. If you’ve explored various options and continue to face difficulties accessing Netflix with ExpressVPN.
Contact ExpressVPN’s Customer Support
If none of the above steps work for you, rather than searching for whether ExpressVPN works with Netflix, head to their website and contact live chat. A customer support representative can provide an updated list of servers that unblock your desired Netflix library.
I tested the chat support by asking for optimized servers for Netflix US and got server suggestions within minutes. You can witness that in the screenshot below:

It was suggested that I use the Miami and New Jersey servers to access Netflix ExpressVPN.
Devices Issues – Does ExpressVPN Work with Netflix?
Here is how to solve these issues and enjoy the ultimate ExpressVPN Netflix combo on all popular devices:
ExpressVPN Netflix Not Working with Smart TVs, Game Consoles & Apple TV
If ExpressVPN stops working with Netflix on your smart TV, Apple TV, or console, the issue is likely with MediaStreamer. An outdated registered IP address is a common cause. Re-register your IP on ExpressVPN’s website whenever your ISP changes it, typically every two weeks.
To fix this, ensure you’re not connected to a VPN server and sign in to ExpressVPN’s website –> My Account –> DNS Settings. Then, tap on Register my IP address –> enable Automatically register my IP address.
This should make ExpressVPN work again with the devices mentioned above. If not, then try to disable IPv6 on your router. Also, ensure that your streaming device is not connected to any Wi-Fi extender and that you’re using your internet connection.
Why is ExpressVPN Not Working on Netflix with Amazon Fire TV?
Netflix effectively blocks VPN connections on Amazon Fire TV. While testing, only around 60% of the servers that worked on a browser also worked on Fire TV. When I connected to a server that wasn’t compatible with Fire TV, I got the following tvq-pb-101 (1.10.5059) error:

Connecting to a Netflix-compatible server for Amazon Fire TV can help you skip this error.
Here is how you clear your cache on Fire TV:
- Visit Settings and click on Applications –> Manage Installed Applications.
- Scroll and choose Netflix.
- Tap on Clear Cache –> Clear Data.

ExpressVPN Netflix Not Working with Windows & MacOS:
If ExpressVPN stops working with Netflix on any of your desktop apps, you immediately encounter the m7111-5059 proxy error:
To resolve ExpressVPN not working with Netflix on Windows and macOS, start by connecting to a reliable server and refreshing the page. If the problem persists, consider clearing your browser cache or switching to the Lightway protocol.
ExpressVPN stands out as a top choice when looking for the best VPN for Windows due to its reliability, effectiveness, impressive speed, robust security, user-friendly Windows application and privacy policy features, making it the ideal option.
ExpressVPN Netflix Not Working With Android & iPhone:
When ExpressVPN is not working with Netflix on smartphones, it’s because these devices can’t be forced to use specific DNS servers. This allows Netflix to check if the IP address provided by the VPN matches your DNS servers, potentially exposing your real location.

I faced an error when I tried to access another Netflix library.
As a workaround, you can ask the customer support team of this VPN for a server that works on mobile. Connect to this server and clear your device’s cache.
How to Use ExpressVPN on Your Router to Watch Netflix From Any Device?
To use ExpressVPN on your router for watching Netflix on all connected devices, follow these steps:
- Ensure your router supports VPN functionality. Check ExpressVPN’s website for a list of compatible models or contact their customer support for help.
- Access your router’s admin settings and find the VPN configuration section. Use the instructions from ExpressVPN to enter the VPN server details and your login credentials, and select the appropriate protocol.
- After configuring the settings, save and restart your router. Once rebooted, all devices connected to your network, such as smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming devices, will be protected by ExpressVPN and ready to stream Netflix without geo-restrictions.

How to Stream Netflix in Censored Countries with ExpressVPN?
Streaming Netflix in countries with strict censorship like China, Iran, Russia, and UAE is challenging due to government blocks and VPN restrictions. However, ExpressVPN remains one of the few services that consistently avoids these barriers.
Why is Netflix Blocked in Certain Countries?
Many governments impose Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), IP blacklisting, and DNS filtering to control internet access. Netflix also restricts content based on location due to licensing agreements. This means users in high-censorship regions face double restrictions, both from their government and from Netflix itself.
How Does ExpressVPN Unblock Netflix?
✅ Obfuscated Servers: Hide VPN traffic to avoid DPI detection.
✅ IP Rotation: Regularly updates IP addresses to evade Netflix blacklists.
✅ MediaStreamer DNS: Provides an alternative method to access Netflix without encryption.
✅ RAM-Only Servers: Enhance security by preventing data storage.
✅ High-Speed Servers: Ensure smooth 4K streaming with minimal buffering.
What Are the Best ExpressVPN Servers for Netflix in Censored Countries?
- China: Hong Kong, Tokyo (Obfuscated servers work best).
- UAE: London, US servers (Avoid peak hours for better speed).
- Russia: Turkey, Germany (Use MediaStreamer if VPN is blocked).
- Iran: Obfuscated servers only (Standard VPNs won’t work).
Fact Check: In the third quarter of 2024, 42.3% of internet users in the UAE and 41.8% in Russia reported using VPNs for online activities.
How to Ensure Smooth Netflix Streaming?
✔️ Use ExpressVPN’s official app (manual setups may not work).
✔️ Enable the kill switch to prevent accidental disconnections.
✔️ Clear cache & cookies to remove location data.
✔️ Switch to mobile data if WiFi blocks VPN connections.
✔️ Have a backup VPN in case of sudden restrictions.
Is ExpressVPN the Best for Netflix in Censored Countries?
Yes! ExpressVPN is one of the most reliable VPNs for avoiding strict censorship and streaming Netflix securely. Its obfuscated servers, frequent IP updates, and MediaStreamer DNS provide multiple ways to stay connected.
Why Does Netflix Block Content?
Netflix blocks content to comply with licensing agreements and copyright regulations set by content providers. Movies and TV shows have different licensing deals based on regions, and content blocking ensures Netflix follows these rules.
Some countries restrict content due to cultural, political, or legal reasons. If your IP is from a restricted region, Netflix blocks access to comply with local laws. Its advanced detection system also blocks VPN IPs, but premium VPNs can avoid these restrictions.
What are Users Concerns for ExpressVPN and Netflix Issues?
Reddit users report ExpressVPN struggling to avoid Netflix’s geo-blocks, with Netflix detecting VPNs and reverting content to original regions. They share troubleshooting tips and potential fixes to restore access.
Why does Netflix still block my access even with ExpressVPN?
Netflix appears to have implemented stronger geoblocking measures, locking users to a primary location” based on billing details or initial setup. Despite connecting to different VPN servers, users often see the same Netflix homepage, primarily showing content from their original region, such as the US.
Although users have tried multiple fixes, like logging out and refreshing pages, Netflix continues to detect VPN use. Some users suggest switching VPNs or ensuring you are not on an ad-supported Netflix plan, which is known to block VPNs completely.
Why is ExpressVPN no longer working with Netflix?
Recently, many users have reported issues with ExpressVPN no longer working reliably with Netflix, even after years of smooth streaming. Netflix has enhanced its VPN detection methods, leading to content either failing to load or giving error messages, with some users noticing that certain shows play while others don’t.
Some users have found temporary fixes by resetting DNS settings or using ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer feature, but these solutions often stop working after a short period.
Customer Feedback on ExpressVPN Netflix
Several users have shared their experiences with ExpressVPN in relation to streaming services, particularly Netflix. Some users found the VPN reliable for streaming, praising its ability to maintain consistent connections with minimal issues.
However, other users encountered problems. One user expressed dissatisfaction, mentioning that ExpressVPN failed to overcome geo-restrictions on some streaming platforms. Another user faced frequent dropouts and black screens when trying to access BBC iPlayer, though Netflix performed adequately.
Overall, ExpressVPN performs well for Netflix and general streaming, but it may struggle with region-specific apps. Despite these issues, users generally appreciate its customer service and ease of use.

ExpressVPN Netflix Performance: Insights from RestorePrivacy’s 2024 Test
When it comes to unblocking Netflix across multiple regions, ExpressVPN has proven to be one of the most reliable VPNs available. A recent 2024 test by RestorePrivacy evaluated ExpressVPN’s performance in accessing Netflix from different locations and found impressive results.
Findings: Reliable Netflix Access Across 12+ Regions
RestorePrivacy’s independent test confirmed that ExpressVPN successfully bypassed Netflix’s geo-restrictions in over 12 regions, including popular locations like the US, UK, and Canada.
This demonstrates ExpressVPN’s strong ability to maintain access to global Netflix libraries, allowing users to enjoy diverse content from anywhere in the world.
Issue: Temporary Server Blocks
Despite its strong performance, the test found that some ExpressVPN servers were intermittently blocked by Netflix. This is a common issue as Netflix continually updates its VPN detection mechanisms to prevent access from non-native regions.
Solution: Simple Server Switching Restores Access
The good news? RestorePrivacy’s findings showed that switching to another ExpressVPN server instantly restored access to Netflix. This means that even if Netflix temporarily blocks a specific server, users can quickly reconnect to a different one and continue streaming without issues.
This case study highlights ExpressVPN’s effectiveness in consistently unblocking Netflix, provided users are flexible in switching servers when needed.

Hello,
Netflix Turkey doesn’t work from Germany. ExpressVPN connects to the Turkish server. But, when trying to login to Netflix Turkey I am immediately redirected to their homepage in the Netherlands. Bad luck.
With NordVPN it’s working fine getting access to the Turkish Netflix libary.
VPN servers often get taken down. A server that might be working today, might not tomorrow. So, if ExpressVPN didn’t work when accessing Netflix Turkey, try switching servers. You can always ask ExpressVPN’s support team as well. No doubt NordVPN is a great option too with plenty of servers worldwide.
my expressvpn didnt work to netflix japan anymore, does it affect you too?
Hi Joseph, ExpressVPN has three servers in Japan (Tokyo, Tokyo 2, and Yokohama), you can try Tokyo 2 server for Netflix Japan. Japan-Tokyo 1 server doesn’t always work with Netflix Japan sometimes, but you will have no issue unblocking Netflix Japan with ExpressVPNs Japan-Tokyo 2 server which works perfectly. Hope this helps.
