ExpressVPN Works with Netflix US, CA, & 4 Other Regions [Tested Nov 2020]
ExpressVPN unblocks exclusive Netflix content from a variety of regions including US, UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, and France. See videos below containing latest tests of ExpressVPN for different Netflix regions.
Netflix libraries vary from region to region simply because of copyright limitations. However, Netflix US has the largest library with the latest movies and shows. But you can only access regions of Netflix other than your own through a VPN that can bypass Netflix’s anti-VPN technology.
5 Steps to use ExpressVPN for Netflix
1. Choose an ExpressVPN subscription and install the VPN on your device.
2. Launch the VPN and enter login details.
3. To access Netflix US, connect to an ExpressVPN US server.
4. For other regions, connect to an appropriate server location.
5. Now visit Netflix website and you will be able to access the library of your chosen region.
Testing ExpressVPN for Netflix on 8 Different Regions
ExpressVPN is widely believed to a VPN that can comfortably unblock Netflix content from a variety of different regions. I have no doubt as to the ability of ExpressVPN to unblock Netflix, but it’s been a while since I last tested it out extensively.
So, I tested ExpressVPN on 8 of the most popular libraries: US, UK, Canada, France, Japan, Spain, Mexico, and Germany, and I made short videos to record actual feeds of unblocking Netflix with ExpressVPN.
Here are the results.
Starting with what is probably the most sought-after version of Netflix, I connected to the Washington DC server in order to see if I could access US Netflix exclusive titles. As you can see in the video above, I was able to stream the movie “Lingua Franca” at HD quality with no buffering at all!
Next, I used ExpressVPN’s Paris – 1 server to access the French library of Netflix. This too worked perfectly, as you can see in the video above where I’m watching the movie “A Violent Life” currently only available in Netflix FR. With no buffering and picture quality of HD, it was a breeze gaining access to French Netflix with ExpressVPN.
Moving forward, I turned the dial to ExpressVPN Frankfurt server this time in order to access some German exclusive Netflix titles. Like with other libraries, I was instantly able to access it and watch the movie “Battle of the Sexes” which is currently only available in Netflix DE. You can see the video above to the excellent HD quality video quality I received while streaming this movie through ExpressVPN.
Netflix Japan is one of the largest libraries of content for any streaming service. It has a lot of exclusives that fans of Japanese cinema will particularly like. To access Netflix JP, I connected to ExpressVPN Tokyo server and was immediately able to see Japanese exclusive titles such as “Profound Desires for the Gods” as you can see above. Once again, the video quality (HD) was fantastic.
The UK version of Netflix is another highly popular library of shows and movies that fans of British cinema and programs will particularly enjoy. To access Netflix UK, I used the ExpressVPN Docklands server, which worked like a charm and allowed me to watch the movie “Residue“, currently exclusive to the UK.
Canadian Netflix is another library that is pretty vast and always has certain shows exclusive to it. In order to access Netflix CA, I connected to ExpressVPN’s Canada – Toronto server and found it working like a dream. In the video above, you can see me watching the movie “Here and Now“, available exclusively in Netflix CA, but the picture quality was SD and clearly lower than what I received for other regions.
Netflix Regions not Viewable with ExpressVPN
As I mentioned above, I tested ExpressVPN on a total of 8 distinct regions which have the most popular content libraries. Out of these 8, I was able to unblock every region with ExpressVPN except Spain and Mexico. This could be a temporary problem, but at the time of this writing, ExpresVPN could not unblock Netflix libraries of Spain and Mexico.

A fast and stable connection is necessary for HD quality streaming in Netflix and ExpressVPN is more than capable of bringing the best Netflix experience to users.
In our latest speed tests using a 100 Mbps connection, ExpressVPN proved to be lightning fast. The VPN comfortably crossed the 80 Mbps mark repeatedly, even reaching almost 90 Mbps on one server. For the US, New York server, here’s how it performed:

ExpressVPN Netflix Not Working? Try These Fixes
Although ExpressVPN doesn’t give errors, there are chances that you might run into errors. So, here are some common troubleshooting actions you could perform to get Netflix up and running:
1. Check IP address
If you’re encountering Netflix proxy error, then there is a chance that your IP address is blacklisted. That’s because Netflix is clever enough to detect IP addresses associated with VPN providers. As soon as Netflix detects that you’re using a VPN to access it from a virtual location, you’re going to get blocked.
Follow these steps to get over this issue and trick Netflix:
- First, verify your IP address without connecting to ExpressVPN
- Then connect to ExpressVPN and check your IP address once again
- Finally, compare the results and make sure that both IP addresses are not the same
Note: If you still see your original IP even after connecting to ExpressVPN, then change your IP address. You can do this by switching to another server location.
2. Flush your DNS
In case a leaking IP address is not the culprit, you might want to make sure that you’re not leaking your DNS. A leaking DNS can also block you from accessing Netflix. To fix this issue, you can simply flush your DNS. Here’s how you can do it yourself:
- Hit the Windows + R keys simultaneously
- Click on Run, type Command Prompt and hit Enter
- Next, type ipconfig/flushdns in the command prompt and hit Enter
- Now you should see this: ‘Windows IP Configuration Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache’
Once you’re all done, you can run an online DNS leak test on dnsleaktest.com to be extra sure.
3. Customer Support
In case, if none of the above steps work for you, then you can go to ExpressVPN’s website and contact their live chat. The support team should be able to exactly pinpoint the issue you’re experiencing. Alternatively, as a last resort, you can try and switch to another VPN. Maybe go for PureVPN which also works quite well with Netflix.

Tips to use ExpressVPN for Netflix in Ultra HD
There are methods you can use to stream Netflix in Ultra HD with ExpressVPN.
1. Use Cable Network Instead of WiFi
Now, this might sound old school, but using a cable internet connection over a Wi-Fi connection can offer you significantly faster speeds.
Sure it’ll be a bit inconvenient if you’re not used to curling around wires around your lap, but it’s worth trying especially if you have proper space to place your ethernet wire at.
2. Use Streaming Protocol
To get the best possible streaming speeds you need to choose the right VPN protocol. While OpenVPN is the most secure, it isn’t the most suitable option for Netflix.
On the other hand, PPTP is much faster and is perfect for Netflix in Ultra HD. The only downside of this protocol is that it is less secure and is known to have security issues.
3. Select Nearest Server Location
You can pick and choose the server that’s closest to your actual location.
- visit a website like www.distancecalculator.net
- Type in your actual location along with the server location you wish to connect to.
The key here is to find the server closest to you to ensure the best speeds possible.
Other Benefits of ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN is easily one of the best VPNs you can have for Netflix streaming. But that’s not all that this VPN is good for. You can easily access blocked torrents with ExpressVPN as well if you frequently download torrents.
ExpressVPN supports all kinds of devices and platforms. For instance, you can install ExpessVPN on Firestick, or use ExpressVPN on Kodi to access geo-restricted channels. It is also possible to configure ExpressVPN on Roku.
You can cancel ExpressVPN to obtain a refund if you make this request within 30 days of purchase. Moreover, there is also an ExpressVPN free trial available for new users that want to try out the service for the first time before committing to a full subscription.
ExpressVPN Netflix: FAQs
Now that we’ve mostly covered everything, let’s go through some of the frequently asked questions about streaming Netflix with ExpressVPN.
Will I still be able to access Netflix with ExpressVPN if I’m traveling abroad?
Yes, you will have no trouble in unblocking Netflix with ExpressVPN, even if you’re traveling abroad. That is because ExpressVPN offers optimized servers for Netflix with tons of IP addresses to help you stream Netflix on the go from anywhere in the world.
Will ExpressVPN slow down my internet speed while streaming Netflix?
Yes, ExpressVPN will slightly decrease your internet speeds as all VPNs generally do, but this effect is hardly noticeable due to the excellent connectivity of ExpressVPN servers.
Why is a VPN needed to access Netflix?
It is perfectly possible to access Netflix without VPN. However, if you want to access Netflix titles that are geo-restricted (only available in certain regions other than yours), then you’re going to need a VPN like ExpressVPN.
Why does Netflix block content?
Netflix has to honor licensing and distribution agreements with all producers which specify the regions they are legally permitted to offer their content in. This is why Netflix has to block content in regions where they don’t have the license to show said content.
ExpressVPN is a top-tier service for users that want to access geo-restricted content on Netflix. It is fast, secure, and stable with a high reliability for Netflix streaming. You can’t go wrong with this one.
