How to Set Up NordVPN for Apple TV in 2021
NordVPN works well with Apple TV but the setup process takes some work. This guide walks you through all the necessary steps to configure NordVPN on Apple TV and destroy geo-restrictions anywhere.
Apple TV is a popular streaming console that is the counterpart of Amazon’s Firestick device. The device comes loaded with dozens of streaming apps and users can install a whole range of other streaming apps through the App Store that is accessible through Apple TV.
Unfortunately, like most online streaming services, much of the content and apps on Apple TV are geo-blocked and only work within the US. So, if you’re located abroad, you’ll only get half the value for the full price of Apple TV, which is pretty unfair.
Thankfully, VPNs can solve the problem of geo-restrictions and allow Apple TV users to access blocked apps from anywhere in the world. But not all VPNs are good enough to effectively access restricted services and apps. To get the best out of your Apple TV outside the US, NordVPN is one of the most effective choices available.
The only problem is that you can’t directly use NordVPN on Apple TV because tvOS doesn’t support VPN apps. You will need to install NordVPN on your router or create a virtual VPN-enabled hotspot connection that can be shared with your Apple TV.
Since setting up NordVPN on Apple TV is a tricky task, it calls for a guide of its own. I’m going to try and make it as easy as possible for you to follow the necessary steps and get NordVPN up and running for unbridled access to Apple TV apps and functionalities anywhere in the world.
Why you need NordVPN for Apple TV
Streaming services generally impose geo-restrictions on their content in order to limit availability to certain regions as specified in licensing agreements with production houses and studios. As a consequence, users of Apple TV-based outside the US are deprived of a lot of content because of geo-blocks.
NordVPN can help bypass these geo-restrictions through its huge network of 5,500+ servers distributed in over 63 countries. You will simply need to connect to a US server to access most Apple TV streaming apps. But the catch is that Apple TV has no native support for VPNs like NordVPN.
So, what you’ll need is a router configured to run NordVPN, and then you can connect your Apple TV to this router. In the following sections, I’m going to guide you through several different methods you can use to connect your Apple TV to NordVPN in order to unblock streaming content of your choice.
How to use NordVPN with AppleTV – Different Methods
There are a number of different ways you can configure NordVPN on Apple TV:
- Install NordVPN on the router and connect your Apple TV to the VPN-enabled Wi-Fi connection.
- Share a virtual hotspot from your computer running NordVPN.
- Share connection through Ethernet.
Set Up NordVPN for Apple TV Via Wi-Fi Router
NordVPN is compatible with most router models in use today, but the provider recommends certain ASUS models because these work best with NordVPN.
As such, you can configure NordVPN to run on your router so that every device connected to the Wi-Fi will automatically establish a connection with the VPN.
NordVPN is compatible with a variety of router models. However, it recommends a few selected ASUS router models. For complete instructions for ASUS routers, you can consult this NordVPN router setup guide.
If manual configuration feels too difficult or you’re not comfortable doing it for any reason, then you can also obtain pre-configured routers from FlashRouters.com. These are a little expensive but they save you the trouble of configuring NordVPN on the router yourself and also avoid the risk of bricking your router firmware if anything goes wrong during the manual setup.
Configure NordVPN on Apple TV Via Virtual Wi-Fi Hotspot
The second method involves creating a virtual hotspot using your laptop and sharing the connection with your Apple TV. Here’s how you can create a virtual hotspot on your laptop with NordVPN installed and connect Apple TV to it:
Step 1: Go to Settings on your Windows 10 computer > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot.
Step 2: Next, select Wi-Fi and enable Mobile hotspot as shown in the image below:
Step 3: Now, go to Settings > Network and Internet > Change adapter options:
Step 4: Find the NordVPN TAP adapter then right-click on it and select Properties:
Step 5: Click on the Sharing tab and check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection.”
Step 6: Finally, from the dropdown menu, select the network connection that you just created as shown in the image below:
Your virtual hotspot is now successfully created. Launch NordVPN and connect to any server of your choice, preferably one that can unblock the streaming content you want to access on your Apple TV. Then, connect your Apple TV to this virtual hotspot network and share NordVPN’s connection with the Apple TV.
You can also use a wired Ethernet connection from your laptop and share it with your Apple TV. Make sure you have an active NordVPN subscription and that the VPN is installed on the laptop you’re sharing the Ethernet connection from.
The steps for sharing an Ethernet cable connection with Apple TV from your laptop are largely identical to the method for creating and sharing a virtual hotspot
Step 1: Open Network and Sharing Center > Click Open Network & Internet settings.
Step 2: In the new window that opens, click on Change adapter options.
Step 3: Find the NordVPN Tap Adapter > right-click on it and select Properties:
Step 4: Now, click on the Sharing tab and check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”.
Step 5: Select “Ethernet” as the Home networking connection and Click OK when you’re done.
Step 6: Now connect your PC to Apple TV with an Ethernet cable and launch the NordVPN app on your computer. Connect to a US server so that Apple TV is able to use this NordVPN connection and allow you to access any blocked streaming apps instantly.
Can you install a VPN on Apple TV?
No, you cannot directly install any VPN apps on Apple TV, since tvOS offers no native support for VPNs.
Is Apple TV region-locked?
No, Apple TV is not region locked at all as far as functionalities and Apple services go. However, any third-party apps and streaming services on your Apple TV can be region-restricted. You will need a VPN to access these.
Is Apple TV and Apple TV+ the same?
Apple TV is the streaming console developed by Apple, which you can connect to your TV in order to access a variety of streaming services. Apple TV+ is the streaming video on demand (SVoD) service owned by Apple, similar to Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video.
Apple TV is the perfect device for streaming enthusiasts that want to access all TV entertainment, shows, and movies through a single platform. Unfortunately, geoblocks limit the full potential of Apple TV, as many apps are hidden behind geo-restrictions.
NordVPN is one of the best services that work with Apple TV and allows users to bypass these geo-restrictions. It’s not so straightforward to configure the VPN on your Apple TV, but the good thing is you’ll only need to go through this troublesome process once. After you’re done setting it up, you’ll be able to use NordVPN on Apple TV anytime you want by simply turning on your router.
