AVG Secure VPN Review 2022

AVG Secure VPN keeps logs and has an expensive $3.75/mo price. It offers servers in 50 locations and has a misleading logging policy. And there are other issues too. Find out everything I like and dislike about AVG VPN in this updated review.

AVG Secure VPN might share the same first name as the famous AVG Antivirus program, but is it worth the relatively expensive $3.99/mo subscription price?

After a hands-on experience reviewing AVG VPN, I found the service to be mediocre. Although AVG VPN is easy to use, is Leakproof, and works pretty fast, I would still suggest opting for alternatives like ExpressVPN.Check out more alternatives best VPN recommended by us.

The fact that AVG only offers a few servers doesn’t work in China, keeps user logs, is quite expensive, and barely works with Netflix is exactly why this VPN scored 3.5/5.0 stars rating overall in this AVG Secure VPN review.

AVG Secure VPN Review – My Rating Criteria

At the time of writing this AVG secure VPN review, I tested the service on the rating criteria described below:

  • Jurisdiction – Where is AVG VPN located?
  • Security – Is AVG Secure VPN safe?
  • Leaks – Does AVG VPN leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?
  • Servers – Support for China & Torrenting
  • Speed – Is AVG Secure VPN fast?
  • Streaming – Does AVG VPN work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?
  • Compatibility – Which devices can I use AVG VPN with?
  • Pricing – How much does AVG VPN cost?
  • Trustworthiness – Support, Trustpilot Ratings & Reddit Reviews

Jurisdiction – Where is AVG VPN located?

AVG Secure VPN is headquartered in the Czech Republic which is a jurisdiction that’s subject to the EU’s intrusive data retention laws. The provider claims to keep no logs, however, I doubt that’s true. We’ll look into AVG VPN’s logging policy a bit later on in this review (Spoiler – It’s disappointing).

Security – Is AVG Secure VPN safe?

Yes, AVG is safe to use. This VPN supports AES 256 bit encryption and makes use of Open SSL certificate authentication. In addition, it offers OpenVPN and IPsec protocols. However, you don’t get the option to use other tunneling protocols like SSTP, IKEv2, or PPTP.

Kill Switch

AVG VPN packs in a built-in Kill switch feature like most VPNs nowadays. However, what I found weird was that there’s no option to turn on or off this feature. Basically, you just have to assume that this feature is enabled by default. There’s no way to tell whether this feature actually works or not. To test it out, I abruptly disconnected from AVG VPN and noticed no popup prompt for the Kill switch.

Not Compatible with Tor

AVG VPN is also incompatible with Tor. I’m not making this up, you will have to opt for other VPNs if you want to browse Tor securely.

Does AVG Secure VPN Keep Logs?

Yes, AVG Secure VPN keeps logs. Even though this provider claims that it doesn’t track user activities, it actually collects a lot of user logs.

Here’s some of the information that AVG VPN logs:

  • IP addresses
  • Email addresses
  • SIM card numbers
  • Geographic locations
  • Phone numbers

All and all, AVG Secure VPN’s logging policy is quite confusing and it’s not clear what information they keep and for what purpose. You can read their privacy policy to see all the information AVG logs and why.

Leaks – Does AVG VPN leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?

No, AVG VPN does not leak IP, DNS, and WebRTC. I ran it through different tests using a variety of online tools and it passed all of it without any issues.

IP leak test

To test for IP leaks, I used ipleak.org while connected to the U.S server of AVG VPN. As you can see from the screenshot below, my default IP addresses if nowhere to be seen. So far so good.

DNS leak test

As for DNS leaks, AVG passed this too without any issues. Here’s a screenshot only showing the DNS address used by AVG VPN.

WebRTC leak test

Lastly, AVG also passed my WebRTC leak test and did not reveal my WebRTC information at all.

Servers – Support for China & Torrenting

AVG Secure VPN’s server network is seriously small. This provider keeps its server count confidential. But as per their live chat representative, AVG VPN offers servers in 50 locations. Here are all the server locations if you’re curious:

  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Frankfurt, Germany
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • New York, USA
  • Miami, USA
  • Seattle, USA
  • London, United Kingdom
  • Paris, France

Compared to other VPNs like PureVPN, AVG VPN doesn’t even come close. So, if you prefer access to a wide selection of VPN servers, better opt for some other VPN service.

If you’re facing any connectivity issues with this VPN, see our guide on troubleshooting AVG VPN.

Does AVG VPN Works in China?

No, AVG VPN currently doesn’t work in China. That’s not all that surprising considering the fact that AVG only offers limited servers. Not only that, unlike other VPNs that work in China, AVG doesn’t support obfuscated servers to bypass the Great Firewall.

Does AVG VPN allow torrenting?

Yes, AVG VPN does allow for torrenting but on a limited number of servers. If you click on the P2P tab within the server section, you should be able to see the list of torrenting servers. However, as I mentioned, you’re not going to find many.

Nonetheless, the important thing is that AVG does support torrenting and offers fast enough speed for quick downloads. For this reason, AVG Secure is a pretty decent choice for p2p networking.

Speed – Is AVG Secure VPN fast?

AVG Secure is a remarkably fast VPN. We were surprised when we tested AVG Secure because the results that it produced were far beyond our expectations.

To test AVG Secure, we used a 100 Mbps connection and measured speeds on several servers, the results of which are summarized in the table below:

Server locationDownload speedUpload speedPings
Australia78.5 Mbps77.46 Mbps195 ms
Brazil69 Mbps78.22 Mbps347 ms
Canada86.94 Mbps80.24 Mbps237 ms
Germany77.44 Mbps23.12 Mbps158 ms
Israel22 Mbps78.57 Mbps202 ms
Japan77 Mbps80.54 Mbps391 ms
Netherlands84.5 Mbps87.11 Mbps161 ms
Singapore75.41 Mbps80.73 Mbps293 ms
Sweden73.2 Mbps80 Mbps167 ms

As you can see, AVG Secure is quite fast and is on the higher end of average.

Streaming – Does AVG VPN work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?

No, AVG does not with Netflix. When testing the VPN, I connected to all US streaming servers one by one and checked to see if I could access the US Netflix library. Unfortunately, it failed every time as discussed in our guide on using AVG with Netflix.

As for other streaming services, AVG VPN’s performance was quite good. I was able to unblock BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO Go, and Amazon Prime with not a lot of issues. Overall, AVG VPN is pretty decent for streaming.

Compatibility – Which devices can I use AVG VPN with?

During this AVG secure VPN review it is found that, AVG VPN can only be used on limited devices. More specifically, AVG only works with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. That’s about it. AVG Secure VPN doesn’t offer any browser extensions or compatibility for alternative devices like Firestick.

However, you can use AVG VPN with Kodi and also share an AVG VPN connection on Roku if you set up a virtual VPN hotspot connection on your Windows or macOS computer.

AVG VPN for Windows

As I said way earlier in this AVG Secure VPN review that it has a very easy-to-use interface. For Windows, it works quite fluidly without any lags or stutters. I also like the fact that every option is easy to find and use.

AVG VPN for Android

On Android, AVG VPN also works decently well. It also boasts a simple user interface with a quick connect button for easy connectivity.

Pricing – How much does AVG VPN cost?

AVG VPN costs $4.99 for 1-year, $3.99 for 2-years, and $3.99 for 3-years. As you might have noticed already, AVG is quite expensive compared to other VPNs with much better features. For this price and unsatisfactory performance, AVG VPN is not worth it if you ask me. The only reasonable thing that this VPN offers is a free trial that can be used on a single device.

If you don’t want to commit to this service in the long run, you can also avail AVG VPN free trial which has a validity of 7 days. I guess that’s the only appealing thing about their pricing plans.

Payment Methods

AVG VPN merely accepts only two payment modes – Credit Card and PayPal. While this is enough for most users, some people actually prefer making anonymous payments through Cryptocurrencies. Disappointingly enough, AVG accepts none of that.

Refund Policy

AVG Secure VPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can get your money back within 30 days without any kind of deduction if you cancel your AVG Secure subscription within 30 days. However, if you purchase AVG VPN through PayPal, you’ll need to pay $0.45 in order to get your accounts validated.

Trustworthiness – Support, Trustpilot Ratings & Reddit Reviews

As far as customer support is concerned, AVG offers a live chat and email support feature. You can also contact their customer support through a phone call. If we talk about email support, it is seriously slow. Paid on-call support, on the other hand, costs a lot and not worth it in my opinion. However, as for their live chat option, it’s fast and quite effective.

AVG also provides an FAQ section that covers installation and troubleshooting queries and provides links to AVG VPN’s own community forums. While this is good, I didn’t find it too useful. Overall, their support section is pretty adequate.

AVG VPN Trustpilot Ratings

AVG Secure VPN has no presence on Trustpilot. In fact, after doing a bit of Googling, I managed to only find a Trustpilot page for AVG Technologies and not for the AVG Secure VPN service. I found this to be a bit strange considering that most VPN services actually have their own Trustpilot pages with user reviews.

AVG VPN Review Reddit

Although AVG Secure VPN doesn’t have a lot of visibility on Reddit, I did come across a bunch of Reddit comments not recommending it. Here are a bunch of Reddit comments not recommending AVG VPN.

GDPR compliance

Although AVG VPN has a sketchy logging policy, it is at least GDPR compliant. In fact, when I went through its privacy policy, I did notice that AVG VPN has even designated a proper data protection officer (DPO) to ensure GDPR compliance.

Do I Recommend AVG Secure VPN?

No, I don’t recommend AVG Secure VPN at all.

Even though AVG Secure VPN is easy to use, offers reliable leak protection, and works with Netflix to some extent, it is still not worth using at all.

Issues like a small server network, slow speeds, a sketchy logging policy, and lack of support for China are enough for me to not recommend this VPN service. If you want more reasons to not use AVG VPN, just consider that it’s quite expensive compared to other VPNs that offer far better features.

All in all, you can get much better VPN services for much cheaper with better customer support, security features, apps, server, and performance. So, after concluding this AVG Secure VPN review, I have rated this service 3.5/5.0 stars.

Do not pay for AVG’s VPN. Chances are that you will not get the service, and there is no phone customer support. Efforts to get a refund will send you on a wild-goose chase. My next step will be to announce on Facebook that it is not worth getting, and I will also report them to the Better Business Bureau.

      Hey there,
I know how frustrated you must be with AVG VPN. As I’ve already mentioned in my review, AVG VPN is not something I recommend using. If you’re looking to purchase a reliable VPN service, definitely give Surfshark a try. It is super affordable and super secure as well.

      • Paul Cantillo says:

I have AVG VPN and I don’t have a problem with it. I read the pros and cons and if anything I think Facebook is a terrible social network. I deleted my account over a year ago because of the politics and its a haven for bullies, scammers,or trolls. I had a Facebook account for about 11 years and it didn’t do much of anything for me.

        • Abdul Rehman says:

Hey Paul, while AVG is good for basic tasks, I wouldn’t recommend using it as your primary VPN service simply because it keeps logs. As a friendly suggestion, there are better VPNs out there.
