AVG Not Working? Try These Quick Fixes
AVG Secure not working? This guide lists down some of the more common issues that AVG users face with tips on fixing these ASAP.
AVG VPN is a pretty basic VPN service. It does not riddle users with a variety of options and features to tinker with. So, if you’ve run into any problems, chances are you can fix it yourself quite easily.
In this guide, I will present easy solutions if you experience AVG not working for you. This could be due to a number of causes as explained here.
If you’ve already tried to fix the issue or simply aren’t interested in using AVG anymore, then you can look into PureVPN as a much more affordable and powerful alternative to AVG VPN.
For now, let’s take a look at some tips for fixing AVG:
AVG VPN not Connecting
Broadly speaking, most AVG VPN connectivity issues can be resolved by applying one of the following:
1. Check internet connection
If you are unable establish connection with the internet at all with AVG VPN running, try disconnecting to the VPN and see if the internet works.
If you are able to connect to the internet with AVG Secure turned off, then that’s a sign that your internet is working fine and the problem is related to AVG only. However, if you’re still unable to connect to the internet, then this only means your internet needs fixing.
In that case, call your ISP and let them resolve your internet problem. If the problem is AVG and not your internet, then continue reading or other tips.
2. Check subscription validity
If you have made sure that your internet is not at the root of your AVG Secure connectivity problem, then the next step should be making sure hat you still have a valid subscription that hasn’t expired yet.
Sometimes, the entire issue is with a subscription payment that the user forgot to make. So, log into your user panel by visiting AVG official website and look at your Account details. If it still shows a valid subscription, then move onto the next step. Otherwise, you must renew your subscription to gain access to the VPN again.
3. Change server locations
It is very much possible that the problem only exists in the particular AVG VPN server that you’re trying to connect to. Although AVG’s network is not as vast as some of the major providers in the industry, it still offers enough locations to choose from.
Try connecting to a location that is physically close to your location. If that doesn’t work, you can continue trying different servers until you find one that works.
For best performance, choose a server location close to where you are located. AVG does deliver impressive speeds, but your proximity to the location will come into play.
If you’ve tried multiple different locations and none of these seem to be working, then it is probably not a server issue. Move on to the next tip.
4. Disconnect other VPNs
If you have other VPN services that may be working in the background, then this can cause AVG to not work properly. Disconnect all other VPNs that are running alongside AVG.
Once you have disabled these, restart your AVG client and see if you are able to connect to servers now. If this still doesn’t work, then move onto the next step. However, it is strongly advised that you use only one VPN at a time. If you have multiple VPNs installed and active at the same time, it is unlikely that any of the fixes and tips will work to get AVG working again.
5. Resolve firewall conflict
If you’re using security software such as antimalware and firewalls, they can interfere with your AVG Secure connection and cause connectivity problems. To find out if software conflicts are causing your problem with AVG, disable all antimalware/firewall from your system and then try connecting to AVG again.
If the VPN is now working properly, then this is certainly a software conflict problem. You will need to add AVG in the list of exceptions of your firewall/anti-virus in order to continue using AVG alongside these.
Adding AVG to the list of exceptions will ensure that other software don’t interfere with your connection and cause problems in the future.
5. Disable/Enable TAP adapters
If you have installed other VPNs along with AVG in your computer, then your connectivity issues might arise from TAP adapter conflicts.
Every VPN installs its own TAP adapter when you set it up for the first time on your PC. To check if this is the source of your problem, disable all TAP adapters other than that of AVG:
- Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
- Here you will find TAP adapters associated with all VPNs installed:
- Disable adapters of all VPNs other than AVG VPN by right-clicking each and selecting Disable.
6. Excessive multi-logins
If you exceed the multi-connection limit, then you will start experiencing issues in AVG Secure VPN app. Make sure you are not exceeding the limit. Ask all the people you have shared your AVG account with and make sure the multi-login limit does not exceed.
Connect to AVG VPN once again bringing down multi-logins within the acceptable limit. If you’re able to login, then you have successfully determined the issue. If not, then continue reading on.
AVG VPN Issues and Fixes for Specific Situations
Here are some specific services and software that users often find AVG VPN giving issues with:
AVG VPN not working with Netflix
AVG offers some dedicated features for Netflix streaming. Unfortunately, none of these worked when I tested them with Netflix. However, you might be able to occasionally access US Netflix particularly with the appropriate AVG servers.
If you fail to unblock Netflix, then I’m afraid there’s not much you can do and the problem lies with AVG VPN’s poor unblocking power against Netflix.
For more information, see this guide on using AVG VPN with Netflix.
uTorrent not working with AVG VPN
AVG offers multiple servers that support p2p activities. If you are trying to access and download torrents with AVG while connected to any server other than these, then AVG VPN might give you problems.
To resolve this issue, simple choose servers available in the “P2P” tab in the server selection screen. These will allow you to access torrents without any problems.
AVG VPN Alternatives
Tried all the above methods and still can’t fix AVG? Maybe it’s time to cancel AVG VPN subscription and try a different VPN. For instance, here’s how AVG VPN compares to PureVPN, a service that is superior in almost every way:
|Servers||2,000+ in 140 countries||53 in 34 countries|
|Customer Support||24/7 live chat & email||Telephonic support & email tickets|
|Logging Policy||Zero logs||Keeps connection logs|
|Jurisdiction||Hong Kong||Czech Republic|
|Compatibility||All devices||Windows. Mac, Android, iOS|
It is always better to try the VPN first before purchasing it. You can get the AVG free trial to test the service first before subscribing to the full subscription.
If you find AVG VPN not working for you, do give all the above mentioned tips a try. In most cases, you should be able to resolve the issue with the steps given above. However, for a more fulfilling experience, you can choose better alternatives like PureVPN. If you’re looking for a VPN with a better balance of privacy and unblocking ability at affordable pricing, then PureVPN is certainly worth a try.
