AVG Secure VPN might not be one of the best VPN out there, but it still works with Roku devices. As long as you have a computer (PC or Mac) that can run as a virtual VPN hotspot, you can provide a secure VPN connection to your Roku device, allow it to bypass geo-restrictions.
One thing to keep in mind is that AVG VPN might not help you unblock all geo-blocks imposed by Roku, simply because it’s not as powerful as some other options such as Surfshark, PureVPN, NordVPN, and so on and so forth.
One more thing that will surely bother you is that AVG Secure VPN can’t be installed on a physical router as it is simply incompatible. Hence why you’ll have to stick with the virtual router method.
Anyways, if you own an AVG VPN subscription and want to use it with Roku, this guide is perfect for you. Today, I’ll show you how to set up AVG Secure VPN on Roku in the easiest way possible via the virtual router method.
Does AVG Secure VPN work with Roku?
Yes, AVG Secure VPN works on Roku devices. However, in order to make AVG Secure VPN work with your Roku device, you’ll need to use a computer (Windows, macOS) to create a virtual hotspot connection for your Roku device to connect to.
But before you get started, keep in mind that Avast VPN might not be able to unblock all popular channels on Roku. In fact, as per my testing, you’re not going to able to unblock Netflix with AVG Secure VPN. How to Setup AVG Secure VPN on Roku (Via a virtual router)
Since AVG Secure VPN is not compatible with physical routers, you’ll need to set up a virtual wifi connection from your Windows PC or macOS computer running AVG Secure VPN. To do this, just follow the steps mentioned below:
Virtual Router on Windows
To create a virtual wifi connection for AVG Secure VPN using your Windows computer, just follow the steps listed below. It should only take you no more than 5 minutes.
Step 2: Download and install the AVG Secure VPN app on your Windows PC
Step 3: Next, on your Windows computer, click on the taskbar located at the bottom right then the Internet connection icon > Network & Internet Settings
Step 4: Find mobile hotspot on the left-hand menu and turn on the Share my Internet connection with other devices option
Step 5: Now click on the Status located on the left-hand menu and then click on Change adapter options
Step 6: Now, Right-click on the AVG Secure VPN Tap Adapter and then click on Properties
Step 7: Next, click on Sharing tab and checkmark the box next to “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”
Step 8: From the drop-down menu, select the hotspot that you just created and then click on OK
Step 9: Now, your PC can run as a virtual wifi router with AVG Secure VPN running in the background
Step 10: Now, launch the AVG Secure VPN app on to your computer and connect to a US server
Step 11: Next, on your Roku’s main menu, select Settings > Network
Step 12: Then select Set up Connection > Wireless
Step 13: Now, you should see a list of all Wi-Fi networks. Just select the virtual Wifi connection you created earlier
Step 14: Now, enter your Wi-Fi password when asked and connect your Roku device to AVG Secure VPN
Note: In order to be able to make the above method work and be able to access U.S specific content on Roku, make sure that your Roku device is set up properly with a US region. If not, follow the steps mentioned below:
How do I change my Roku region to the U.S?
To change the region of your Roku device to the US and be able to watch U.S. exclusive content from anywhere in the world, just follow the steps below.
Step 1: Launch the AVG Secure VPN app and connect to a U.S. server location
Step 2: Now, create a Roku account
Step 3: Since you don’t have a U.S. credit card, if you get asked to choose a payment method, you can just skip this step without providing credit card information
That’s it. Your new Roku account with US region settings is properly created. Now you can use AVG Secure VPN’s US server to watch all content exclusively available on Roku US.
But in case you’re already signed in to your Roku device with a non-U.S. account, you can factory reset your Roku device by going into Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset to sign out.

- Finally, click on “Ok” to finish the process
That’s it. If you followed all the steps properly, you should be able to use your new virtual hotspot connection with your Roku device. But if you’re encountering any weird connectivity with AVG Secure VPN, make sure to check out our AVG Secure VPN not working guide for easy fixes.
How AVG Secure VPN Unblocks Channels on Roku
Since you can only enjoy Roku in just a few countries, you’ll need a VPN to be able to bypass geo-blocks from anywhere in the world.
With AVG Secure VPN, you’ll be able to access most channels on Roku, however, not all. For instance, you definitely aren’t going to be able to watch Netflix with AVG VPN. AVG VPN is also not ideal for torrenting because of its logging policy, so that’s something to consider too.
But other than Netflix, you’ll be able to access plenty of blocked content on Roku with AVG VPN’s US servers. AVG VPN is also fast too. Here’s how easy it is to access most channels on Roku with AVG Secure VPN:
- Power on your Roku device
- Install Amazon Prime or any streaming app on your Roku
- Log in to the streaming app of your choice using your Username and Password
- Search for any content you’d like to watch and enjoy
This is how easy it is to access geo-restrictions content with AVG Secure VPN. But if you encounter issues unblocking your favorite content on Roku, then you can always cancel your AVG Secure VPN subscription and get refunded.
