Are you suspicious of cheap VPN services because you think they always steal your data and are generally unsafe?

Well, I’m afraid you are wrong.

We have a natural tendency to associate cheap products and services with poor quality. As a result, review websites are quick to sweep the lesser-known and cheaper services under the carpet.

The upshot of this practice is that many VPN providers are given short shrift by reviewers, so they don’t even talk about these most of the time.

The users, therefore, never get to learn about services that cost less but are still surprisingly good.

I believe that is quite unfair to these VPNs, as some of these deserve more recognition.

So, in this post, I’m going to talk about VPNs you can get at a low price and still manage to fulfill basic needs which VPN technology was designed to cater in the first place.

TrustZone

Trust.Zone is not exactly a cheap option as far as its monthly subscription is concerned.

What’s more, Trust Zone has a considerably small server network and average speeds.

So why do I recommend it?

Because of good security features. That is the only USP of this service. Also, you can gain access to US Netflix and torrent websites with Trust.Zone running in the background.

Finally, the Seychelles jurisdiction is ideal for users seeking privacy-friendly laws to protect their online activities from snooping government agencies.

  • Servers: 164
  • Protocols: OpenVPN and L2TP/IPSec with AES 256-bit encryption
  • Simultaneous connections: 3

TrustZone

14. FrostVPN – $2.99/month

  • 1-Month: $5.99
  • 3-Month: $3.99/month
  • 1-Year: $2.99/month
  • Renewal Fee: No auto-renewals

FrostVPN

Nothing pleases me more than a provider that is straightforward about their policies and features.

FrostVPN is a rare one in this regard. It has the most transparent policies and is generally upfront about its business model and practices.

For instance, the provider clearly mentions that they do not offer a lifetime subscription because it is an unsustainable model for them.

Lifetime deals are always shady as there is no logical way for the provider to make a profit and generate funds to support their technology.

It is a really positive sign that the provider has a clear stance about offering no lifetime subscription.

With 139 servers in 40 countries, unlimited bandwidth, 5 multi-logins, 3 tunneling protocols, and 3-day money-back guarantee, FrostVPN is a remarkably good service that you can avail for $2.99/month on its 1-year subscription.

  • Servers: 139
  • Protocol: OpenVPN, IPSec, PPTP
  • Simultaneous Connections: 5 devices
  • Logging Policy: Minimal logs
  • Torrent Support: Yes
  • Netflix Support: Yes

15. CrypticVPN – $0.99/month

  • 2-Day: $0.99
  • 1-Month: $3.49
  • 1-Year: $14.99
  • Renewal Fee: N/A

CrypticVPN

CrypticVPN is a service that comes with few options and feature. Perhaps that is one of the reasons behind the relative obscurity of this service.

Nonetheless, it is one that deserves special mention in this list as its yearly subscription is surprisingly low-cost. Many small providers charge just as much money as the premium leading providers, even though they don’t have half the features of those providers.

CrypticVPN only demands as much money as its features and performance warrants. It has 10 server locations and supports only the OpenVPN protocol for tunneling.

The logging policy is a little vague, but seems to be good enough. Overall, CrypticVPN is not a bad option at all at this price range.

  • Servers: 12
  • Protocol: OpenVPN
  • Simultaneous Connections: 1
  • Logging Policy: Zero logs
  • Torrent Support: Yes
  • Netflix Support: Yes

  • Servers: 61
  • Protocol: OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP
  • Simultaneous Connections: 1
  • Logging Policy: No logs
  • Torrent Support: Yes
  • Netflix Support: Yes

Finally, the 24/7 customer support and 7-day refund policy make Anoine one of the best services available for cheap.

  • Servers: 800
  • Protocol: OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP
  • Simultaneous Connections: 5
  • Logging Policy: Zero logs
  • Torrent Support: Yes

18. BoxPN – $2.99/month

  • 1-Month: $9.99

IntelliVPN

IntelliVPN is another brand that no one seems to know about. The service includes servers in 20 countries around the world, covering leading countries in Europe and Asia.

It uses OpenVPN protocol and AES 256 encryption. The privacy policy is highly transparent, but the service seems to log a little too much information than necessary.

IntelliVPN is only available for iOS and Android and does not support multi-logins. However, it offers a free version with fewer features for iOS.

  • Servers: 20
  • Protocol: OpenVPN
  • Simultaneous Connections: 1
  • Logging Policy: Some logs are kept
  • Torrent Support: No
  • Netflix Support: No

20. FlowVPN – $3.99/month

  • 1-Month: $5.99
  • 3-Month: $4.99/month
  • 1-Year: $3.99/month
  • Renewal Fee: N/A

FlowVPN

FlowVPN consists of a network of 100 servers geographically distributed in 50 countries. It offers dedicated apps for macOS, Android, and iOS, which is rare for an unknown provider.

Cheapest Monthly Plan VPN

You might have noticed that the most expensive pricing plan of most VPN services is usually the monthly plan.

If you just need to use a VPN for a month because you’re going on a trip to another country where some websites will be geo-restricted, then it’s unfair if you have to expend upwards of $10 for a monthly VPN subscription.

Among well-reputed VPN providers Hide My IP offers the most affordable monthly plan at $4.95/month.

This service essentially works as a SmartDNS and is particularly effective in bypassing geo-restrictions. So, if you’re traveling abroad and need a way to still experience the Internet the way you are accustomed to back home, Hide My IP’s monthly subscription is an excellent way to go by without spending too heavily.

Best $1 VPN

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have a VPN as cheap as $1 only? Well, it turns out there is a VPN service that is exactly this dirt cheap and delivers reasonably good performance: LimeVPN.

I must say I treat any product with a surprisingly cheap price tag with suspicion and LimeVPN was no different. However, the service actually has scores of satisfied customers.

Although the server network is quite small, having presence in only 17 countries, it would be unfair to demand anything more from a service that is arguably the cheapest in the industry.

LimeVPN

LimeVPN has a Trustpilot score of 8.8/10, which is a testament to its legitimacy. The $1/month subscription is valid for two years, so you will be billed every two years at a rate of $1/month, but paid up front.

So, this deal only works if you’re in for the long run. The provider also has a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you find yourself less than satisfied, you can demand a refund.

Cheap VPN vs Free Trial VPN

The cost of VPN services is one of the most crucial factors that affects a user’s purchasing decision. In the VPN industry, free trials are quite common to see and it is just another marketing tactic that providers use to attract – and ideally – retain more customers.

Free trials are a great way to test the quality of a VPN and judge whether you like it enough to purchase a premium subscription.

So, given the choice between a free trial and a cheap VPN service, what should you opt for?

The answer is easy. You should always opt for a cheap VPN service because free trials always have some limitations that severely restrict your experience with locked features. Here are some of the common limitations of VPN free trials:

  • Bandwidth caps
  • Slower speeds
  • Small server network
  • Torrenting restrictions
  • Streaming restrictions

However, although cheap VPNs aren’t exactly free, they have much better affordability than some of the more expensive alternatives. What’s more, they aren’t riddled with limitations and consist of valuable features that actually work.

So, give the list of cheap VPNs above a look and take your pick.

How to Book Cheap Flights with a VPN?

If you travel frequently by flight, you might have noticed that the cost of tickets varies depending on where you are located in the world.

This means if you book a ticket by visiting an airline’s website from a Singaporean IP address, for instance, then you can purchase said tickets at lower prices than you’d normally get from your local IP address.

Here is how you can lower the prices of tickets with a VPN:

  1. Visit a flight booking website and search for a ticket of your preferred destination and airline
  2. Find the most affordable and suitable ticket
  3. Close the website and exit your browser
  4. Launch your VPN service and choose a server location like Singapore, Hong Kong etc.
  5. Visit the booking website via incognito mode of your browser
  6. Search for the same ticket you were interested in before
  7. The price for the ticket should now be different

Note: It’s possible that changing the server location might give you even higher pricing than normal. If this happens, just change your location until the price changes is lower than normal.

Cheap VPN for Torrenting

Torrenting is a risky business. The laws against digital copyrights infringement are growing stricter in most parts of the world, and downloading torrents is strongly frowned upon.

However, torrenting is not always used for illegal purposes. Some content owners may expressly permit users to download their content without paying for it.

Some people download torrents to check out whether they will like a video game, music album, movie etc. before spending money on it to legally obtain it.

There’s nothing ethically wrong if these are your intentions for downloading a torrent. Unfortunately, digital copyright infringement is not the kind of crime where authorities take into account your motives for downloading torrents. If you’re caught, you are guilty, and that’s the end of it.

This is why a secure VPN service becomes essential if you want to torrent some file with honest intentions.

The cheapest VPN for torrenting that keeps your privacy tightly secured is Surfshark which you can purchase for only $1.99/month.

If you want to discover other VPNs that have the security features essential for safe torrenting, check out our article on best VPN for torrenting to learn all about staying safe while downloading torrents.

Factors to Consider While Choosing a Cheap VPN Service

Here I’m going present to you shortly, I’d advise you to keep the following criteria that constitute what a quality service in mind:

VPN Factors to Consider - Infographic

Beware of Renewal Prices

Renewal pricing is a trick that some services use to take unfair advantage of users. They offer a discounted price at one time, but change the pricing as soon as the user needs to renew his subscription.

I’d urge all users to read Terms of Service before going to subscribe one. However, majority of the providers do not explicitly mention their policy regarding renewal prices, so it’s difficult to tell that about a particular provider.

I scoured the websites of all the providers mentioned in this list and often had to reach customer support for a clarification on renewal prices.

So, as far as providers in this list are concerned, you can see the stance of each provider on renewal prices, if any.

Cheap VPNs: What are the Red Flags?

With a glut of services on the web, it is extremely difficult to accurately pinpoint a VPN that might be a fraud. Regardless, there are many red flags that can help you determine whether a service is genuine or not.

As it happens, many providers offer a gracious discount if you sign for their yearly packages. This is completely fine as, like most businesses, these services are seeking long-term customers.

In hindsight, it makes total senses to reduce your charges for users who are in for a long haul. However, when a service offers a ridiculously low price for monthly service, users should a bit skeptical.

This is because when a service charges low just for a month’s service, it is maybe interested in something other than money. To put it more bluntly, it may be interested in your browsing activity or other personal information.

Hence, before opting for a cheap VPN, do your research and look into the background of the service. In particular, investigate the company’s history and see if it has ever been involved in a scandalous activity.

Do Budget VPNs Keep Logs?

Yes and no.

There is no general rule that a low-priced VPN will keep logs, while a higher-priced one won’t. Every provider is different and the privacy policies of every vendor varies.

The only way to be sure if a VPN is keeping your logs is to read through their privacy policy pages. Doing so, you will find that there are indeed a number of low-cost services that have strong privacy policies and do not keep logs of users.

At the same, you might find some providers that do keep logs. This is why I strongly urge users to do their own research when choosing a service. You can always find a hidden gem that is available at economical price and doesn’t compromise on your privacy!

Concluding the Topic:

One thing to remember is that a cheap VPN does not mean cheap quality. It is only meant to be cheap in price.

I have listed some hidden gems in the article which are little known to users but offer incredible performance and are loaded with features. I hope you found this blog useful.
