AVG Secure VPN Review 2019
AVG Secure VPN keeps logs and has a reasonable $2.49/mo price. It only offers 55 servers in 36 countries that unblock Netflix and support torrenting. AVG Secure VPN has received 3.5 stars rating.
AVG Secure VPN is an internet privacy service and a brainchild of the AVG team.
During this AVG Secure VPN review, I did not like its logging policy, pricing, and speeds as much as I would have liked.
You may choose your desired pricing packages like monthly, yearly, two yearly, and three yearly after paying $6.66, $3.99, $2.99, and $2.49 on a monthly basis respectively.
In addition, you can go through our further VPN reviews for ironclad security and incessant protection of your online privacy.
My Rating Criteria
During this AVG VPN review, I tested the service as per my own devised rating criteria described below:
- Pricing – How much does AVG VPN cost?
- Security – Protocols, Encryption & Features
- Jurisdiction – Is AVG VPN Safe?
- Speed – Is AVG Secure VPN fast?
- Streaming – Does it Support Netflix, other VoD Services?
- Leaks – Does it expose IP, DNS, WebRTC or any Virus?
- Trustworthiness – Logging Policy, GDPR Compliance & Customer Support
- Compatibility – How does AVG VPN work?
Pricing – How much does AVG VPN cost?
AVG VPN delivers affordable pricing plans to its users.
When you see the pricing plans on AVG official site, you will get little confused. However, this is not the case.
I recommend you to download and install its free trial version first.
If you directly buy their pricing plan from the website, you will be able to secure your one device only.
This is a major catch provider should rectify it on urgent basis.
If you want to avail its multi-login benefit that allows you to protect your five devices at once, go through the below-mentioned pricing packages.
Once you have installed your preferred app, you can manage your subscription plans accordingly.
Again, you will not find any monthly or quarterly package. Instead, you will have to purchase yearly package at least at the cost of $47.88 per year.
Likewise, the cost of AVG VPN two year and three year plans are $71.76 and $89.64 respectively.
This review suggests that the AVG VPN price remains on the higher side if you get its monthly pricing plan.
Furthermore, you can compare it’s pricing plans with other cheap VPN providers.
Payment Methods (Bitcoin is not included)
This AVG VPN review discloses that this service offers merely two payment modes: Credit Card and PayPal.
Unfortunately, this notable service doesn’t offer Bitcoin option in its payment modes which means that you get zero chances for making anonymous payments.
I will suggest this VPN provider to add Bitcoin with other payment methods. Thus, users can pay their dues anonymously from anywhere.
In my experience, it is a payment mode, which customers take seriously while opting for service.
The easier payment methods would be, the happier customers would feel with the provider.
Refund Policy/Money Back Guarantee
According to my review, this service follows a client-friendly approach when it comes to refund policy.
You can get your money back within 30 days without any kind of deduction.
On the other hand, it also offers AVG free version. However, users of PayPal will still need to pay $0.45 in order to get their accounts validated.
Is AVG VPN Free?
Luckily, you can avail AVG free VPN feature for a week to check the performance of the service accordingly. You can download and install the VPN on different devices like Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.
In fact, it was quite easy to use AVG download benefit on the computer as I didn’t have to go through cumbersome installation process.
Thus, you can read AVG VPN review for Android and iOS as per your own needs.
No matter, either you’re using trial version or premium one, its features work equally best on all operating systems and devices at the same time.
Security – Protocols, Encryption & Features
AVG VPN has to add a kill switch feature in its armory. Besides, it should provide browser extensions for different browsers.
Therefore, the service cannot become a completely secure VPN until they start offering a kill switch benefit.
Anonymize yourself from the prying eyes of the intruders and hackers with AVGVPN which is made up of first-rate protocols and encryption.
For instance, it is armed with OpenVPN that is known as the safest protocol which paves the way for flawless security of your devices. Technically, open-source means anybody can verify the code.
It is especially helpful in fixing security holes and taking the performance to the next level.
If you are MacOS user, then, making use of the VPN will be of great use because it offers IPsec protocol built for best performance and getting desired results.
As far as encryption concerns, the VPN is matchless because it consists of 256-Bit AES Encryption for perpetual security with complete anonymity.
Apart from this, it makes use of Open SSL and certificate authentication for lasting protection.
Process Verification and Control
My AVG review unveils that the service uses OpenSSL library and certificate verification process to develop a secure tunnel.
It also verifies the server and device before initial key exchange. Financial institutions like banks and other online sites often follow the same principle by applying HTTPS protocols.
But, AVG VPN should use these key exchanges through forwarding secrecy approach.
As a result, future keys will not be created by using past data as these key exchanges should be developed and destroyed periodically.
Network Security in a Nutshell
There is no denying OpenVPN protocol is one of the most popular tunneling protocols that use 256-bit military-grade encryption by default.
This way, the online security product is able to safeguard its users’ data to another level.
That said, the provider must add other tunneling protocols like SSTP, IKEv2, PPTP, and others in its armory to offer luxury to their users.
By employing OpenSSL libraries along with secure certificate verification, AVG Secure VPN is at the right track in securing their subscribers’ information.
No Kill Switch
Ironically, it has not described other necessary privacy features like internet kill switch.
You should use the VPN at your own risk in case your VPN connection suddenly drops. You may lose your privacy since the above-mentioned situation may arise at any time.
Not Compatible with TOR
It does not work with TOR browser either. You will have to opt for other VPNs to use TOR browser to gain the utmost extent of online protection.
You can contemplate using ExpressVPN and Surfshark as these services are compatible with TOR.
Jurisdiction – Is AVG VPN Safe?
The VPN mainly hails from a user-friendly country.
AVG Secure VPN does not have a presence in any 5 eyes, 9 eyes, and 14 eyes country. Therefore, you can consider the said attribute of the service as a big plus.
The service is located in the Czech Republic hence you do not have to bother yourself regarding data retention practices.
Doubtful Parent company
The parent organization may sell your online browsing information to third-party sites.
This AVG 2019 review discloses that they can collect their users’ VPN data for three months.
Users should keep in their minds that AVAST has acquired AVG few years ago. The latter does have a shady background.
They can cooperate with the concerned authorities if needed.
Server Locations (Does not have strong presence)
To be honest, the list of server locations is bad. The service has servers just in 55 cities in 36 countries.
But, it is greater than to Avast VPN which is located in 33 countries.
A thing worth noting here is that out of these 55 cities, it has 7 locations based in the US only.
So, if you want to avail product with a wide selection, better try your hands on any other product.
Speed – Is AVG Secure VPN fast?
AVG Secure provides average connection speeds to its subscribers.
As far as speeds are concerned, the VPN has provided mixed results.
It means they have to improve their performance in terms of speeds quite considerably.
Upon connecting to 25 Mbps internet connection, I received the following speed result:
Upon connecting to its US server, I was able to get the below-mentioned speeds.
I also tried to connect to its UK server and found the following speed:
I connected to its German server too and experienced above-average speed eventually.
Based on the above testing results, the VPN belongs to the category of average speed VPNs.
Also check the list of top 15 fastest VPN services to see how AVG sets against them.
Streaming – Does it work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?
On streaming front, the service works quite well with US Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and Kodi.
Interestingly, the said VPN provider allows you to access US Netflix media content from anywhere. Here is how you can do to achieve your mission:
- After downloading and installing the VPN on your device, you should connect to the US server
- Once you have connected to your chosen server, open your Netflix account
- Select your favorite TV show or movie from the list and enjoy unlimited dose of online entertainment
Still, I put this VPN to the test in order to check its Netflix unblocking feature.
After connecting to the US server, I accessed its US library in no time. However, while trying to unblock my favorite movie Avengers: War of Infinity, I came across Netflix Incognito mode error.
Therefore, I again tried to access the movie from a normal browser and to my surprise, I watched the movie without any buffering issue.
Moreover, I was able to watch “The Incredibles 2” from the normal browser without any hassle.
This way, I was able to enjoy Netflix with AVG VPN to the fullest.
Does AVG VPN unblock Hulu, HBO GO, Amazon Prime & BBC iPlayer?
Like Netflix, you can use the product to unblock different media streaming services like BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO Go, and Amazon Prime.
But it does help you unblock Kodi Live TV content.
Kodi is a media player that streams free content. But it is geographically restricted that can only be unblocked with a VPN.
There are similar other VPNs that can help you unblock Kodi. But first, you need to find the best VPN country for Kodi.
Can I perform Torrenting tasks securely with AVG Secure VPN?
The AVG VPN Review 2019 highlights that it is incalculably handy service to enjoy streaming with zero difficulty.
Moreover, it permits Peer-to-Peer (P2P) transfers through AVG VPN torrent benefit.
You Just have to select a server from the list to perform Torrenting tasks from anywhere securely.
An important thing, which you must bear in mind that Torrent client, does not connect to all servers.
That’s why, users face problems sometimes in getting connected for streaming their favorite shows, seasons, movies and sporting events.
Interestingly, users from different countries search the service as it has become one of the most trending VPNs in the industry.
Here is the list of countries where users have searched AVG VPN:
- United States
- United Kingdom
Leaks – Does it expose IP, DNS, WebRTC or any Virus?
In terms of privacy, AVG has passed all the required tests with excellence.
I ran it through different tests including IP leak, DNS leak WebRTC leak and app file checking too.
Fortunately, the service did not leak my IP or DNS information at all.
I used the following testing tools that include:
I used ip8.com in order to check its WebRTC leak protection feature.
As expected, it did not reveal my WebRTC information at all.
Note: I connected to US server before conducting IP, DNS & WebRTC leak tests.
I also ran its Windows setup file through virustotal.com to see if it leaked any virus or not.
The VPN did not expose any malware during the testing.
Trustworthiness – Logging Policy, GDPR Compliance, Customer Support
When it comes to fulfilling the trustworthiness requirements, the provider has failed to deliver big time.
As far as their logging policy is concerned, the said VPN does not monitor its users’ online activities.
However, not all things are rosy with this provider.
- IP addresses
- Email addresses
- SIM card numbers
- Geographic locations
- Phone numbers
In addition, as per its product page:
We have no idea what you do online when using our servers. We don’t track traffic so if we get asked? We can’t tell.
Still, the logging policy is difficult to understand for common internet users.
Likewise, if you examine its TOS in detail, you cannot understand what information they keep and for which purpose.
Users’ log is a major concern and if your VPN service is following such practice, you should worry about your privacy.
Follows GDPR Guidelines
What makes this online privacy provider different from other services is its GDPR compliance.
Sadly, AVG does not contain customer support various options.
You cannot start live chat which is really very discouraging for any user.
All you can do is to submit a support ticker and keep waiting until you don’t get complete reply via e-mail.
The only best way to reach out to the technical support staff at AVG VPN is ‘Telephone Call’.
If you want to get something fixed or want to ask something quick, the only chance you can avail is paid call.
You will not find such customer service elsewhere, which asks customers to pay just for getting quick fixes. Funny isn’t it?
- For Simple Fix, you will have to pay $79 in which you can just avail 1- time call for basic help that covers 1 device at a time along with free diagnosis.
- For Complex Fix, user gets advanced help with free diagnosis at the cost of $119 per call.
- For Total Care, you will get $199/year or $0.99/month. You will unlimited fixes for all problems, whereas it covers 3 devices with facility of free diagnosis.
Furthermore, you can use the FAQs section to get the solutions of different installation and troubleshooting queries.
Similarly, there is another option available by the name of community support.
If you are unable to use live chat feature, I suggest you to contact its community support.
By doing so, you will solve your problems straightaway.
Compatibility – How does AVG VPN work?
AVG VPN is compatible with all the leading platforms and devices like Smart Android TVs.
However, it is not compatible with routers.
According to my AVG Secure VPN Review, this service adheres to one-size-fits-all-formula because it is comfortably compatible with all operating systems i.e. Windows and Mac.
Likewise, it provides apps for Android and iOS. Rest assured, with easy-to-understand installation guides, it would be piece-of-cake for you to install this VPN on your smartphones and computers.
The big drawback with AVG VPN service is that it can’t be installed or inserted into the Router. Similarly, AVG VPN Crack is not compatible with Smart TVs.
But, you don’t need to feel disheartened because this VPN works well on Smart Android TVs, just download the app from Google Play and you are ready to use it with ease.
At present, the service does not offer any dedicated extension for different browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera.
However, I hope that the provider will include the said benefits in its arsenal in near future.
Gaming Consoles & Streaming Devices
As I already mentioned, the VPN is not compatible with the router. This is the reason; you cannot use the provider along with gaming consoles.
Here is the list of different gaming consoles and devices it does not work with:
If you want an alternative VPN for roku, here are some VPNs that work with Roku.
User Interface – Can I use AVG Secure VPN hassle-free?
Undeniably, it is extremely user-friendly software with well-designed interface.
Since server location selection and ON/OFF switcher are similar and that is a good thing.
Long story short, user interface is quite easy to navigate, expressive and quite impressive too.

Do I Recommend AVG Secure VPN?
No, I don’t recommend AVG Secure VPN.
As per this AVG Secure VPN review, the VPN has not ticked all the boxes correctly.
The provider does not deliver impressive connection speeds, nor does it follow no-logging policy too.
Moreover, the parent company’s background is also questionable.
On the other hand, AVG VPN is undoubtedly a partially secure, virus, and leak-free service.
That said, it has not progressed quite well on some necessary privacy features.
Therefore, I have given AVG VPN 3.5/5.0 rating overall.
