AVG Secure VPN Review 2019
AVG Secure VPN keeps logs and has an expensive $6.11/mo price. It only offers 55 servers, barely works with Netflix and torrenting. AVG also has a terrible customer support system, which is why it has received a 2.5 stars rating.
AVG Secure VPN might share the same first name as the famous AVG Antivirus program, but is it worth the expensive $6.11/mo subscription price?
After a hands-on experience reviewing AVG VPN, I found the service to be mediocre. Although AVG VPN is easy to use, Leakproof and is headquartered in a safe jurisdiction, I would still suggest opting for alternatives like PureVPN.
The fact that AVG only offers a few servers, doesn’t work in China, is seriously slow, keeps user logs, is quite expensive and barely works with Netflix and torrenting, is exactly why this VPN scored 2.5/5.0 stars rating overall in this AVG VPN review.
My Rating Criteria
At the time of writing this AVG VPN review, I tested the service on the rating criteria described below:
- Jurisdiction – Where is AVG VPN located?
- Security – Is AVG Secure VPN safe?
- Leaks – Does AVG VPN leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?
- Servers – Support for China & Torrenting
- Speed – Is AVG Secure VPN fast?
- Streaming – Does AVG VPN work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?
- Compatibility – Which devices can I use AVG VPN with?
- Pricing – How much does AVG VPN cost?
- Trustworthiness – Support, Trustpilot Ratings & Reddit Reviews
Jurisdiction – Where is AVG VPN located?
AVG Secure VPN is headquartered in the Czech Republic which boasts privacy-friendly laws. Apart from that, the Czech Republic does not have any affiliation with 5 eyes, 9 eyes, and 14 eyes countries. This is actually great for any VPN service claiming to offer no logs. We’ll look into AVG VPN’s logging policy a bit later on in this review (Spoiler – It’s disappointing).
Security – Is AVG Secure VPN safe?
No, AVG VPN is not safe to use. Although this VPN supports AES 256 bit encryption and makes use of Open SSL certificate authentication, it only offers OpenVPN and IPsec protocols, just two. You don’t get the option to use other tunneling protocols like SSTP, IKEv2 or even PPTP. Pretty weak if you ask me.
No Kill Switch
Aside from offering only limited protocols, AVG VPN also lacks a built-in Kill Switch feature which can be found on almost all VPN apps. This is quite disappointing considering that you may end up compromising your privacy in case your VPN connection drops abruptly.
Not Compatible with Tor
AVG VPN is also incompatible with Tor. I’m not making this up, you will have to opt for other VPNs if you want to browse Tor securely.
Does AVG Secure VPN Keep Logs?
Yes, AVG Secure VPN keeps logs. Even though this provider claims that it doesn’t track user activities, it actually collects a lot of user logs.
Here’s some of the information that AVG VPN logs:
- IP addresses
- Email addresses
- SIM card numbers
- Geographic locations
- Phone numbers
Leaks – Does AVG VPN leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?
No, AVG VPN does not leaks IP, DNS, and WebRTC. I ran it through different tests using a variety of online tools and it passed all of it without any issues.
IP leak test
To test for IP leaks, I used ipleak.org while connected to the U.S server of AVG VPN. As you can see from the screenshot below, my default IP addresses if nowhere to be seen. So far so good.
DNS leak test
As for DNS leaks, AVG passed this too without any issues. Here’s a screenshot only showing the DNS address used by AVG VPN.
WebRTC leak test
Lastly, AVG also passed my WebRTC leak test and did not reveal my WebRTC information at all.
Servers – Support for China & Torrenting
AVG Secure VPN’s server network is seriously small. This provider only offers around 50 servers in 36 countries. Compared to other VPNs like PureVPN, AVG VPN doesn’t even come close. So, if you prefer access to a wide selection of VPN servers, better opt for some other VPN service.
Does AVG VPN Works in China?
No, AVG VPN currently doesn’t work in China. That’s not all that surprising considering the fact that AVG only offers limited servers. Not only that, unlike other VPNs that work in China, AVG doesn’t support obfuscated servers to bypass the Great Firewall.
Is AVG VPN good for torrenting?
No, AVG VPN is not good for torrenting. That’s because AVG only supports torrenting on a limited number of servers. Now if you’ve ever used VPNs for torrenting, you know exactly what difference servers make. In my experience, I encountered both slow speeds and connectivity issues while downloading and seeding.
Speed – Is AVG Secure VPN fast?
No, AVG Secure VPN is not fast. In fact, even after testing speeds on multiple servers in the US, UK, and Germany, I barely managed to crunch out any satisfactory speeds on my 25 Mbps base internet connection.
Upon connecting to its US server, I was able to achieve 14.53 Mbps download and 3.55 Mbps upload speeds at max.
With the UK server, I managed to get even worse speeds. At max, I managed to achieve to 8.60 Mbps download and 2.09 Mbps upload speeds.
With the German server, I managed to get slightly better download speeds, but still terrible upload speeds. Check out the screenshot below:
Streaming – Does AVG VPN work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?
Yes, AVG works with Netflix. However, while trying to watch Avengers: War of Infinity, I came across Netflix Incognito mode error.
Even more annoyingly, I encountered errors multiple times before finally unblocking the movie that I wanted to watch.
As for other streaming services, AVG VPN’s performance was a hit and miss. Although I was able to unblock BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO Go, and Amazon Prime, I did encounter multiple errors and utterly slow speeds. Overall, I would recommend using some other VPN like Surfshark to stream Netflix and other VoD services.
Compatibility – Which devices can I use AVG VPN with?
AVG VPN can only be used on limited devices. More specifically, AVG only works with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. That’s about it. AVG Secure VPN doesn’t offer any browser extensions or compatibility for routers and gaming consoles.
AVG VPN for Windows
As I said way earlier in this review, AVG has a very easy to use interface. For Windows, AVG VPN works quite fluidly without any lags or stutters. I also like the fact that every option is easy to find and use.
AVG VPN for Android
On Android, AVG VPN also works decently well. It also boasts a simple user interface with a quick connect button for easy connectivity.
Pricing – How much does AVG VPN cost?
AVG VPN costs $79.99 for 1-year, $149.99 for 2-years and $219.99 for 3-years. As you might have noticed already, AVG is quite expensive. For this price and unsatisfactory performance, AVG VPN is not worth it if you ask me. The only reasonable thing that this VPN offers is a free trial that can be used on a single device.
AVG VPN merely accepts only two payment modes – Credit Card and PayPal. While this is enough for most users, some people actually prefer making anonymous payments through Cryptocurrencies. Disappointingly enough, AVG accepts none of that.
AVG Secure VPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can get your money back within 30 days without any kind of deduction. However, if you purchase AVG VPN through PayPal, you’ll need to pay $0.45 in order to get your accounts validated.
Trustworthiness – Support, Trustpilot Ratings & Reddit Reviews
As far as customer support is concerned, AVG offers no live chat support option. All you can do to contact their customer support is to submit a support ticket via e-mail or call via phone. If we talk about email support, it is seriously slow. Paid on-call support, on the other hand, costs a lot and not worth it in my opinion.
To compensate for a lack of a live chat support option, AVG provides an FAQ section that covers installation and troubleshooting queries and provides links to AVG VPNs own community forums. While this is good, I didn’t find it too useful.
AVG VPN Trustpilot Ratings
AVG Secure VPN has no presence on Trustpilot. In fact, after doing a bit of Googling, I managed to only find a Trustpilot page for AVG Technologies and not for the AVG Secure VPN service. I found this to be a bit strange considering that most VPN services actually have their own Trustpilot pages with user reviews.
AVG VPN Reddit Reviews
Although AVG Secure VPN doesn’t have a lot of visibility on Reddit, I did come across a bunch of Reddit comments not recommending it. Here are a bunch of Reddit comments not recommending AVG VPN.

Do I Recommend AVG Secure VPN?
No, I don’t recommend AVG Secure VPN at all.
Even though AVG Secure VPN is headquartered in a safe jurisdiction, is easy to use, offers reliable leak protection and works with Netflix to some extent, it is still not worth using at all.
Issues like small server network, slow speeds, a sketchy logging policy and lack of support for China is enough for me to not recommend this VPN service. If you want more reasons to not use AVG VPN, just consider that its quite expensive and offers terrible customer support.
All in all, you can get much better VPN services for much cheaper with better customer support, security features, apps, server, and performance. So, after concluding this AVG Secure VPN review, I have rated this service 2.5/5.0 stars.
