TorGuard Not Working? Try These Quick Fixes

TorGuard may give errors and issues to some users. However, it generally doesn't require anything more to fix it than the tips given below.

Troubles with TorGuard preventing you from securing your privacy? It can be quite upsetting when a VPN is glitching after you purchase it.

But there are good chances that the problem you’re facing with TorGuard is easily fixable with the tips given below.

If you have already tried to VPN troubleshooting tips without any effective outcome then your only option might be to try another VPN. PureVPN is an excellent and affordable alternative option to TorGuard.

But before you give up, try out all the following tips.

Unable to Connect to TorGuard

Connectivity errors with TorGuard might arise due to a variety of reasons, but can usually be fixed in the following way:

1. Check for Internet access

Users that are facing connectivity issues with TorGuard’s network must first make sure that they have access to the Internet. To test if the if Internet is working fine on your end, turn off TorGuard and exit. Now try opening any random website through your browser like you normally do.

If you are able to visit websites and run other programs that require an Internet connection when TorGuard is turned off, this means that your Internet is working fine.

However, if you’re still not getting Internet access, then your connection might be the problem. Try restarting your network devices (routers, modems etc.). If that doesn’t work, you might have to call your ISP and ask them to fix the connection.

2. Change server location

It is wise to try different server locations if you’re unable to connect to a particular server. Sometimes, servers are deliberately taken offline by providers when for maintenance and repairs, so this could cause connectivity issues on the users’ end.

TorGuard offers 3,000+ servers in 50+ countries, which is an appreciable amount.

TorGuard servers

For best performance, you should connect to the server that is closest to your geographical location, but if you are experiencing problems connecting to these, try other servers.

If you can use TorGuard perfectly when connected to other servers, then this is probably a temporary issue with the original server you were trying to connect. TorGuard should resolve the problem soon. Until then, you can continue using other servers.

It is also advised to connect to servers that are physically close to your location for best speeds. Generally however, TorGuard maintains high speeds across its network.

For torrent users, you can connect to any server since TorGuard fully supports torrenting on its core VPN service and also offers port forwarding option.

3. Change VPN protocol

VPN protocols are responsible for taking care of establishing communication between your system and the Internet as well as encryption. Some ISPs block certain protocols due to government regulation or some other technical reason.

As such, your connectivity issues with TorGuard could be possibly a result of using the default protocol which might not agree with your ISP’s configuration.

Try changing your protocol from TCP to UDP or vice versa. This can be done through TorGuard’s main menu:

TorGuard protocol

No ISP can block all protocols, so one of these protocols will definitely work for you, assuming the problem is related to networking protocols.

4. Change DNS settings

By default, TorGuard uses its own DNS servers, but these can occasionally give problems to some users. It is possible to change the DNS through the Settings > Network menu of TorGuard:

TorGuard_VPN_DNS_Settings

You can choose Google’s public DNS instead of TorGuard’s. If you notice an improvement in performance and connectivity with the new DNS, then it is probable that TorGuard’s own DNS is having issues.

5. Disable IPv6 leak protection

The IPv6 leak protection is an important feature for users whose ISPs provide them with IPv6. However, this is still very rare as most of the world uses IPv4 only.

As such, there’s no real benefit to having IPv6 leak protection if you’re not using this system of IP addresses. In fact, having IPv6 leak protection can cause connectivity issues if your network configuration only uses IPv4.

TorGuard users can disable IPv6 leak protection from the Settings > Network menu.

TorGuard ipv6

Once disabled, try connecting to servers and use TorGuard again.

6. Resolve software conflicts

Firewalls and antivirus software can interfere with your TorGuard VPN connection. To test if your security software are affecting the VPN connection, disable all such security programs and reconnect to TorGuard. If you are able to connect to the VPN now and the issue seems resolved, this proves that your firewall/antivirus is preventing the VPN from working properly.

It is strongly recommended to keep your anti-malware software always enabled. So disabling these just to get TorGuard working is not a very good idea.

What you can do is add TorGuard in the list of exceptions in all your security programs and then enable them again. This way, you will be able to use TorGuard along with your anti-malware programs.

7. TAP adapter problems

TAP adapters are network drivers needed to establish connection with the Internet. Every VPN service installs its own TAP adapter in your system when you first set it up. If you are using more than one VPN, than these may interfere with each other, causing you problems when trying to connect to any VPN.

If you want to use TorGuard without interference, you might need to disable TAP adapters belonging to other VPNs. Here is how you can do that:

  • Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

change adapter settings

  • Here you will find TAP adapters associated with all VPNs installed in your system.
  • Disable adapters of all VPNs other than TorGuard by right-clicking each and selecting Disable.
  • For TorGuard, disable it first, then enable it again.

Restart your computer after performing these steps and launch TorGuard.

8. Excessive multi-logins

TorGuard supports 5 multi-logins for each subscription. This might tempt users to configure TorGuard for multiple devices at the same time and even exceeding the limit. When that happens, you might experience unstable performance and connectivity issues.

TorGuard can be installed directly on Fire stick as well as used alongside Kodi or on Roku as well.

TorGuard Alternatives

Tried all the above methods but still can’t resolve issues with TorGuard? Maybe it’s time to cancel TorGuard and try a different VPN altogether. For instance, here’s how TorGuard compares to PureVPN, an affordable VPN with great all-around capability.
