OperaVPN Speed Test

Want to know if OperaVPN's fast? Can you stream, game and torrent with it? Check out this article where I conduct an in-depth OperaVPN speed test on 3 different servers worldwide. Results may shock you.

Opera — the classic browser that we’ve all used in the past. But did you know that it now comes with a built-in VPN? You only get three server locations in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and an option to pick the most optimal server based on your location.

That’s about it.

So, it doesn’t offer a lot of servers, but is it fast? After all, it is completely free. Could it actually be fast? Well, to find out, I conducted an in-depth OperaVPN speed test with my 100 Mbps internet connection.

In order to give you an idea of what to expect from OperaVPN, I tested its speeds using all of the three (3) server locations that it offers for a full in-depth analysis.

If you’re in a hurry and don’t want to stick around throughout the entire article, here’s a brief table with all the speed test results compiled for your convenience.

OperaVPN’s in-depth speed test for 2022

In order to figure out how good or bad OperaVPN would perform considering that it only offers a few servers, I tested its performance using three (3) different servers with my 100 Mbps internet connection. Here are the test results:

1. Optimal Server

First, I choose the optimal server location to let OperaVPN do all the work. When I ran the test, I managed to get a download speed of 93 Mbps and an upload speed of 98.5 Mbps with 157 ms ping.

2. Europe

With the European server, I was again surprised to see my speeds in the mid 90’s range. After running the test, I managed to get a download speed of 93.17 Mbps and an upload speed of 94.09 Mbps with only 144 ms ping. So far so good.

3. Asia

When I connected to the Asian server, I did notice quite a major speed drop. If you look closely at the screenshot, that’s more than a 50% drop. With my 100 Mbps connection, I only managed to get a download speed of 32.59 and an upload speed of 26.67 Mbps with 275 ms ping.

4. Americas

Last but not least, I also ran a speed test while connected to the Americas server of Windscribe. This time I managed to get a download speed of 76.84 Mbps and an upload speed of 88.7 Mbps with 287 ms ping.

A bit about OperaVPN

OperaVPN is used to be a standalone product a while back, however, it got discontinued and is now available as more or less a proxy within the Opera web browser. This is why it only offers three (3) server locations. But in terms of performance, OperaVPN is without a doubt quite fast. It is not the fastest VPN but it is fast. You can check high-Speed VPNs for better experiences.

Other than that, there’s not much to talk about. You don’t get any fancy features or customizable options. All you can do is enable or disable the so-called VPN feature from Opera’s settings.

The interface is also very basic. I like that it shows you a graph of how much data you consumed every day of the week. Other than that it gives you an option to pick a server location and displays your IP address at the bottom.

Over, OperaVPN is just a glorified proxy. If you want to learn more about this VPN, go ahead and check out our detailed OperaVPN review. Also, if you’re facing any connectivity issues, make sure to go through our OperaVPN not working guide.

Mostly VPNs slow down internet speed, follow the guides to find the best possible ways to boost the VPN speed.

Wrapping up!

After compiling all the results from the OperaVPN speed test, I think you know how fast OperaVPN is. If you go back and check out the table that I covered earlier on in this blog post, you’ll see that OperaVPN managed to perform impressively on the optimal, European, and Americas server locations, however, it didn’t perform all that great on the Asian server, So you can check fastest VPNs for all-rounder performances.

But if we talk about real-world usability experience, I would say that OperaVPN is quite capable in terms of speeds. I was able to stream HD content, play online games, and download torrents with it too without any issues.

That being said, while it’s great for speed, do keep in mind that it offers little to no privacy and security features.
