The Seychelles based online privacy provider is a mixed bag because it offers decent connection speeds alongside various privacy benefits under one package.

It does have a sufficient server network like Surfshark but does not have an attractive pricing strategy as of PureVPN. On the other hand, it supports US Netflix and torrenting too.

However, drawbacks such as lack of money back guarantee and complicated logging policy have spoiled a reputation of this VPN a great deal which I found in this Astrill VPN review.

Therefore, I don’t recommend the service to privacy conscious netizens.

If you want to know about VPNs other than Astrill that take no half measures in securing their users’ privacy, read this comprehensive VPN review guide.

My Rating Criteria

I created my own 8 step criteria to review that consists Of:

Pricing – What is the cost of Astrill VPN?

Astrill VPN has one of the most costly pricing plans for their users.

Like any other VPN service, the service comes with three packages that include all the features except refund policy or money back guarantee.

These packages are:

Apart from these pricing plans, you can avail other services in the form of dedicated IP, VIP add-on and Astrill VPN router too.

You can get above described services at the cost of $5.00/month, $10.00/month and $39(one-time payment) respectively.

Free Trial

The service provides a 7-day free trial so that the customers can get ample time to test its services.

The free trial is offered to everyone regardless of region and restrictions.

However, you must try out their free trial benefit because you cannot claim for the refund if you are dissatisfied with the service for any reason.

Payment Methods

Currently, Astrill VPN delivers a comprehensive list of online payment options including:

  • PayPal
  • Bitcoin
  • UnionPay
  • American Express
  • Maestro
  • VISA
  • Master Card
  • Perfect Money

Security – Protocols, Encryption & other features

This Seychelles based VPN service has a huge list of tunneling protocols like OpenWeb , OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, Wireguard, OpenConnect IPSec, StealthVPN, SSTP, Cisco, and IKEv2/IPSec .

Astrill VPN uses AES 256-bit encryption to make sure your traffic and internet connections are safe.

Good protocol support compiled with advanced 256-bit strong encryption means you are 100% safe from the potential threats of cyber industry.

Other Features

Astrill VPN offers other essential privacy benefit such as kill switch. When you lose your VPN connection, your IP address is at the risk of being exposed to your local ISP.

In addition to this, the website you are visiting may also detect you in this case.

To prevent this from happening, Astrill provides a kill switch feature. This feature kills your internet whenever you lose your VPN connection. To toggle this feature, go to the privacy option in the settings tab.

Jurisdiction – Where is AstrillVPN Located?

Astrill VPN’s headquarter is situated in user-friendly country Seychelles. Luckily, the country does not have a connection with five eyes alliance.

Therefore, the service does not have any compulsion to follow certain data retention rules.

Server Locations

Astrill provides 365 servers across 65 countries to its users.

The servers are located all around the world and you can connect to any of them from anywhere globally.

Obfuscation

Astrill VPN seems to be working absolutely fine in China.

With Astrill VPN in China, the users can hide their IP addresses and can access the streaming websites and popular social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

It has always ensured that all the servers are properly operating in China and cause no trouble to the user.

Astrill VPN has used an obfuscation feature to great extent. It allows users to access their favorite sites in one of the most repressive countries of the world anonymously.

For more information, have a look at this guide that discusses the contribution of obfuscation benefit in various oppressive countries.

Speed – Is this VPN fast?

In terms of speed, this VPN has to improve its performance drastically.

I used 25Mbps internet connection before conducting speed test.

I was able to receive 13.88 Mbps download speed after connecting to its UK server. Here is the snapshot:

Streaming – Does it unblock Netflix?

If I say Netflix and Astrill both go hand in hand, I am not wrong.

You can connect to its US Chicago server to unblock US Netflix media library anonymously.

On torrenting front, the VPN won’t disappoint you at all. It offers P2P optimized servers that enable you download your favorite torrents securely.

Leaks – IP, DNS, WebRTC & Virus Tests

Astrill is safe to use since it does not reveal your actual IP address, DNS or WebRTC data online. Here are the screenshots:

Virus Test:

I tested its Windows setup file to check if it exposed some viruses or not. Luckily, the app does not contain any malware.

Trustworthiness – Logging Policy & Customer Support

On reliability front, the service is definitely a mixed baggage. They do claim that they don’t keep users’ logs.

However, they can store your personal information through cookies. Above all, they can potentially sell your personal data to third party marketers as well.

This is one of the notorious aspects, which I have found in their privacy policy. When you use a VPN you have an every right to know about how a company collects and uses your data.

Sadly, this isn’t the case with Astrill VPN as its privacy policy is hard to understand.

You can get awareness about logging policies of different VPNs through one-detailed guide here.

Customer Support

Similarly, their customer support section includes:

  • Setup Manuals
  • Live Chat
  • FAQs
  • Contact Form
  • Video Tutorials

Astrill VPN has taken all the desired steps to make their support highly effective.

Compatibility – How much compatible Astrill is?

Astrill VPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, Linux, iOS and routers. To my surprise, they also support TOR browser too.

As far as their usability goes, the apps are simple and easy to use. Once you have downloaded the app on your preferred device, you can start using the service in a moment.

Moreover, Astrill VPN offers an excellent user-interface that only needs your email address and password to login.

After logging in, you may choose your desired protocol, be it OpenVPN, Stealth VPN or OpenVPN hassle-free.

Alternatives to Astrill VPN

If you are not interested in this service, you can read some of the reviews below:

Do I Recommend Astrill VPN?

No, I don’t recommend Astrill VPN.

Despite offering free trial feature, the Seychelles based VPN service has some demerits up its sleeve.

You can consider these downsides in shape of expensive pricing, cumbersome privacy policy, and no refund as well.

On the other hand, it allows you unblock Netflix with such an ease. Furthermore, it is torrent-friendly too.

This is the reason, I have given the service 3.2/5.0 stars rating based on the performance during this Astrill VPN review.

  1. Lelia Pollett says:

I have been with Astrill for five years but I am now looking at other providers as they sent me a VPN router that never worked, I was on remote with tech support for two days after opening the router, literally brand new and the router worked for one evening. They are refusing to refund citing warranty on a two day old router that never worked. Terrible service for the first time in five years, just terrible.

  2. Kv says:

Their refund policy is at their discretion. After hours of technical support online since their phone systems are down I learned that their customer service representative had lied to me about the services offered period I was told I could use this service as a hotspot period after only a few hours of purchasing based on this misrepresentation of their product they are refusing to give me a refund

  3. Wayne says:

Astrill VPN is really awful.I have used it for the past 2 years and I can safely say that I have never encountered any issue with it. It is fast, reliable and more importantly, it has low cost.

  4. User says:

They have horrible customer service. When dealing with VPNs you will need technical support no matter how Internet savvy you are. I am formed the service I needed, I pay them, then they inform me I need to spend more money to actually use the service.

    • carmen says:

I must say that this is not true! I am using Astrill now for about 2 years and technical support could not be better! Every time I need some technical support they’re more than welcoming.
Been using PureVpn before, but it is not good as Astrill.

      • Chang M. says:

Maybe the customer service experience you had was an isolated issue. I have been with Astrill for three years now and had to contact them thrice. My experience with their tech support is great and never had to call again after each instance.

  5. Sadaf Mehreen says:

    Astrill offers good services.

Last year I quit using Astrill just because I was facing a bit difficulty in connection and with that I saw a few bad responses by other customers.
Later on, I realized that I made a mistake to switch to other vpn service.

I am back to using Astrill since more than last 9 months and I am happy with it.

I would advise all others to try it on their own rather than being misguided by false information.

  6. Jim says:

    ASTRILL CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS
They ignore all your refund related questions
and quite frankly, the only thing they ever respond to you with is with technical solutions for problems you didn’t even ask. I’m better they use automated messages to reply to everyone based on keywords in the ticket.

  7. Mohamad says:

Best Vpn service but new IOS app is not working. Please Fix it ASAP.

  8. Sunny says:

Astrill is NOT honost to their customer. Many things posted on their webpage are lies. Especially the logging and privacy policy. Below was a post by Astrill ex-engineer (http://tinyurl.com/nombsv6). Judge for yourself.

I worked for Astrill so I can tell you the claims attributed to them on that page are mostly bullshit.

    1) We do not keep logs

Reality) False. They do keep logs. With reguard to http traffic, they log every single single page loaded for every customer using their VPN servers. They log your account number, the requested url, the time of the request. This information is kept for months at a time and then thrown into a journal system.

    2) We do not disclose your customer information

Reality) Mostly true. Astrill is mostly concerned with closing the accounts of people who abuse their network. If anyone asks they will say they can’t identify what customers are doing, but in reality is Astrill is constantly scanning through their logs looking for people running scripts which hit google/facebook (or any other site) too frequently, and then those accounts are disabled.

    3) We may enable logs on a server in case of network abuse

Reality) False. Http requests are logged on all servers and that data is kept for a minimum of three months. Always. When I asked about this discrepancy between what they say publicly and what they do privately I was told we would do whatever it takes to run the company (even if that includes deceiving the customers).

    4) We do not store any files, we provide IP transit only. Therefore, we can’t fulfill any “take down(s)”

Reality) False. Astrill receives a whole bunch of take down notices every single day and then blocks users from reaching those destinations. One of the uses of the logs they keep is to locate copyright troll IPs. We developed scripts to compare take down requests (which include our offending torrent IP addresses and time stamps) to locate the trolls, and then block our clients from connecting to them. We still did a lot of take downs, but by locating copyright troll IPs (by running scripts on our logs) we were able to block many IPs.

    5) The majority of users use shared IP space therefore we are not able to identify the customer

Reality) False. We knew exactly who registered what accounts and logs every one’s activity. We can and do identify your account. We close accounts each day for abuse. We were working on a system to throw abusive accounts onto one server. I don’t know what progress was made in this endeavor.

    6) P2P activity is allowed on many of our servers

Reality) True. These are the servers marked with a star in the connection tools we provide.
