SaferVPN Not Working? Try These Quick Fixes

SaferVPN not connecting? No worries. You can usually fix it by resolving security conflicts and apply other tips as explained below.

Are you experiencing problems with SaferVPN? This may happen for a number of reasons. Fortunately, most of the time the problem is quite simple to solve and you should be able to fix it without much nuisance.

If you have already tried to fix your VPN by applying generic tips and couldn’t get it to work, then as a last resort, you might need to look into a different VPN service. PureVPN is an excellent and affordable alternative option to SaferVPN.

But without further ado, let’s first pick our fixing tools to try and get SaferVPN working again.

Unable to Connect to SaferVPN

Connectivity issues are the most common kinds of errors that users face. The following tips can help resolve errors with SaferVPN:

1. Check Internet access

All VPNs need a working Internet connection. As such, making sure that your Internet is working fine without turning on the VPN is the first step troubleshooting step.

If your Internet fails to work with SaferVPN turned on, then disable the VPN and try accessing the Internet. If you are able to use the Internet when SaferVPN is off, then this proves the problem is rooted in SaferVPN itself.

However, if there’s no Internet access even with the VPN shut down, then you will first need to fix your Internet. Try restarting your routers and modems. Failing that, call your ISP and they will fix the problem for you.

Once the Internet is working fine again, you should be able to use SaferVPN without any problems.

2. Login problems

An incorrect username or password will obviously prevent you from signing into the SaferVPN app and use it. It is also important to bear in mind that you shouldn’t use any special characters such as ë, è, é in passwords or PUK. These are not accepted by most apps including SaferVPN.

3. Change servers

Servers are physical machines that require continual maintenance to function properly. If you’ve been trying to connect to one particular server location with SaferVPN and facing issues, it’s possible that the server is under maintenance and temporarily offline. The issue can also arise if you are connected to the same SaferVPN server with another device

SaferVPN offers 1,300+ servers in 50+ locations. Try changing to other locations and see if the problem still persists. . If you are able to access the web with other servers, then this is almost definitely a server-level issue that should be resolved soon. Until then, you can continue using other SaferVPN servers.

4. Change protocols

Some ISPs in certain countries may block specific VPN protocols. SaferVPN offers multiple protocols to choose from including OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP and PPTP.

Try using all of these protocols and see if you can get SaferVPN to work properly with any of these. It is unlikely that all the protocols are blocked by your ISP, so at least one of these should work.

5. TCP/IP settings reset

If none of your programs and browsers are able to access the Internet when you turn on SaferVPN on your Windows system although the Internet is connected and everything works normally again after turning off SaferVPN, then your TCP/IP settings might need a reset.

Microsoft has a simple fix for this problem given here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357/en

Try doing the reset after downloading the fix from the link and see if that helps you access the Internet with SaferVPN now.

6. Resolve software conflicts

SaferVPN’s connection may experience conflicts if you have anti-virus or firewalls installed and running in your system. To check if other programs are preventing SaferVPN from running properly, close all your antimalware and firewall software, then run SaferVPN again.

If SaferVPN seems to be performing better now, then this is an indication that your security software are interfering with SaferVPN. It is not recommended to shut down your anti-virus programs. Rather, you should add SaferVPN in the list of exceptions in your firewall/anti-virus software.

The files related to SaferVPN that should be added in the exception list are:

  • SaferVPN.exe
  • Service.exe
  • openvpn.exe

Also, enable the “Do not scan encrypted network traffic” option if your anti-virus program supports it. This will make sure that the anti-virus doesn’t bother SaferVPN, allowing you to use all of your security programs along with the VPN at the same time.

7. Update the App

An outdated app can cause a lot of problems such as frequent disconnections, slow speeds, performance issues etc. SaferVPN provides an option for checking for latest updates within its client.

You can use this feature to make sure you are using the latest version of the app and download it if you aren’t.

An updated client might not seem like much, but it can actually improve your overall performance. So don’t forget to keep checking for new updates and install one as soon as it is available.

8. System time

The SaferVPN network requires that your system time is set correctly. If your time is incorrect, you may not b able to log in to the SaferVPN network.

Correct your system time according to your local time zone and try using SaferVPN again.

9. TAP adapter problems

If you have multiple VPNs installed in your system, they can cause conflicts with your Windows TAP adapter. This creates a problem on the driver-level and may prevent you from establishing a stable connection with SaferVPN.

It is strongly recommended to disable the TAP adapters of other VPNs and disable/re-enable SaferVPN’s adapter to shake loose any possible conflicts. Here’s how you can disable/enable VPN Tap adapters:

  • Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

change adapter settings

  • Here you will find TAP adapters associated with all VPNs installed:
  • Disable adapters of all VPNs other than SaferVPN by right-clicking each and selecting Disable.
  • For SaferVPN, disable it first, then enable it again.

After performing these steps, restart your computer, then launch SaferVPN.

SaferVPN Alternatives

Tried all the above methods and still can’t fix SaferVPN? Maybe it’s time to cancel SaferVPN and try a different VPN. For instance, here’s how SaferVPN compares to PureVPN, a decent service that is affordable yet powerful:
