ExpressVPN Review 2020
ExpressVPN is a powerhouse of privacy and security protection whether you are a basic or an advanced level user. In this ExpressVPN review, it has earned 4.2/5.0 rating. Learn why in the detailed analysis below.
ExpressVPN is one of the most popular Virtual Private Network service in the industry. This VPN service is based in British Virgin Island (BVI) that is assumed as the safest country from users’ privacy perspectives. It surely is powerful and secure, but is it worth the price? To find out, I have conducted an extensive ExpressVPN Review.
ExpressVPN has 3000+ servers, which are ideal for unblocking Netflix, torrenting and other streaming services as well. In terms of compatibility, the VPN is compatible with all the major operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and a few other popular platforms discussed below in the detail.
When it comes to privacy, ExpressVPN delivers a comprehensive list of tunneling protocols including AES 256-bit military-grade encryption, Tor compatibility, network lock, 5 devices simultaneous connection at an expensive price of $8.32/mo with a lot of features that I have covered below in this review of ExpressVPN.
However, like other VPNs, this VPN has some pros and cons as well. This is why I analysed ExpressVPN through various extensive testings and gave a verdict with a 4.2 star rating in this ExpressVPN review for 2020.
Want a Quick Overview? Here’s What’s Important
- Logs. It has a strict no-logging policy and even wipes off your session data the moment it ends.
- Security. Best for security with it’s military grade encryption.
- Streaming. Our #1 VPN for streaming. Unblocks almost all streaming services like Netflix, Hulu & more.
- Speed. One of the fastest VPNs with seamless speeds. Here are the speed tests.
- Geo-restrictions. Its huge server base helps bypass Geo-blocks everywhere. Even works flawlessly in China.

- Pricing – How much is ExpressVPN?
- Trustworthiness – Trustpilot rating, Reddit reviews & Customer support
Here’s a video review of ExpressVPN if you don’t want to read through the whole blog.
Jurisdiction – Is ExpressVPN located in a safe country?
Yes, ExpressVPN is located in a safe country i.e British Virgin Islands. What this essentially means is that ExpressVPN isn’t subject to the UK, US or other countries that are a part of the Fourteen Eyes (a group of of surveillance-sharing countries).
This is highly reassuring because even if we are to assume that ExpressVPN stores some information about users in their logs that could be potentially revealing, authorities and agencies lack the jurisdiction to legally request any information from the company’s BVI-based headquarters.
Security – How secure is ExpressVPN?
ExpressVPN is totally secure due to its powerful AES 256-bit military grade encryption which offers the best security.
To be precise, the VPN implements AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) to encrypt the control channel, which passes control instructions for message transfers between the client (user) and the server (website/web service).
For the data channel, which contains the actual information about your activities, ExpressVPN uses the Diffie-Hellman key exchange as the symmetric encryption scheme.
Moreover, this encryption scheme takes advantage of outstanding mathematical complexity and the probability of breaking it so minuscule that even a supercomputer would take millions of trials before it can be figured out. Even that is an unusually best-case scenario for the poor hacker.
To further ensure the integrity of your information while it is in transit, the provider uses HMAC (keyed-Hash Message Authentication Code) authentication so that an attacker may not alter your information in real-time, effectively protecting from many kinds of malicious attacks.
Realizing the persistence and cleverness of modern hackers, ExpressVPN goes to even greater lengths to guard the privacy of your information. The company’s encryption system is characterized by perfect forward secrecy, whereby your encryption keys are automatically changed every 60 minutes and every time you connect to ExpressVPN.
With perfect forward secrecy, even if your keys are compromised, an attacker would only be able to get 60 minutes of your data at max. All your information from previous sessions as well as future sessions will still remain under a solid shroud of secrecy.
Moreover, protocols like PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP and OpenVPN UDP / TCP allow you a lot of options to choose from for how you want your VPN to establish communication with the internet. The recommended protocol, however, is OpenVPN UDP/TCP because this is the most robust of VPN protocols currently available.
The SHA-512 hashing algorithm with 4096-bit RSA certificate keys associated with OpenVPN performs server authentication in order to rule out possible MiTM (man-in-the-middle attacks).
Overall, ExpressVPN is an extremely strong package of security capable of defending you from various kinds of cyber-security threats.
Additional Security Features
Apart from common privacy benefits that most VPN providers offer, ExpressVPN has some amazing security features in its armory. Let us discuss them one by one:
ExpressVPN TOR Compatibility
Tor is quite popular among journalists, activists, and bloggers that want to protect their anonymity and their right to free speech without fearing backlash from the government.
ExpressVPN is fully compatible with Tor browser. Users that don’t want to risk their privacy in the slightest can take advantage of ExpressVPN’s compatibility with Tor and receive dual protection of the onion router plus the encrypted tunnels of the VPN.
To enable VPN over Tor, you will first need to connect to your favorite ExpressVPN server and then launch the Tor browser. It is important to follow these steps in the right order, as launching Tor before connecting to the VPN doesn’t provide the same anonymity and this functionality is not supported by ExpressVPN.
Does ExpressVPN have a kill switch? (ExpressVPN Network Lock)
ExpressVPN delivers a kill switch feature by the name of “Network lock”. If your VPN connection is interrupted for any reason, the kill switch will shut down your computer’s internet connection until the VPN is reestablished.
This mechanism makes sure that there’s not even a single packet of your data that slips through the internet from your computer without the envelop of ExpressVPN’s encryption system to guard it.
The ExpressVPN kill switch feature will protect all your internet traffic as long as online security is not restored. You can use kill switch on different apps like Windows, Mac, Linux, and routers too.
In my testing, the ExpressVPN kill switch worked flawlessly without any issues and responded swiftly to my attempts to close of the OpenVPN connection (for which I applied different tricks such as closing the UDP/TCP ports, launching a firewall etc.)
If you don’t know, you and I both use third-party DNS servers to access websites we want to visit. These third-party DNS servers log DNS queries whenever we try to access any site.
But with ExpressVPN’s Zero-Knowledge DNS feature, all of your DNS requests will be handled by private DNS servers owned by ExpressVPN. This is in stark contrast to the practice of many other VPN providers who use OpenDNS and other third-party DNS services.
Moreover, the problem with third-party DNS is that since these aren’t controlled by the VPN provider, they often lack the same level of encryption and tunneling. As a result, attackers can lie in wait for your DNS queries to appear on these substandard third-party solutions and compromise your security while you are under the illusion of being totally secure courtesy of the VPN.
However, with private DNS, ExpressVPN ensures that there are no loose ends or kinks left anywhere in the entire system that a hacker can exploit, giving you all-encompassing security and secrecy on the internet.
ExpressVPN Split tunneling
Split tunneling is a powerful feature that only a handful of premium VPN services offer. Fortunately, ExpressVPN supports this feature. in all but its iOS app.
Split tunneling allows you to select which apps will use the VPN connection, and which apps should directly connect to the internet, bypassing ExpessVPN’s. For instance, if you want to set all of your browsing traffic to pass through the VPN, but want to leave your video games out of the VPN network, then split-tunneling helps you bifurcate your VPN and non-VPN traffic.
ExpressVPN’s apps make it really simple to do so, giving you the option to simply select the applications that you want to be routed through ExpressVPN while leaving others to connect to the web directly.
Logging Policy – Does ExpressVPN keep logs?
ExpressVPN is a zero log VPN which means it does not keep logs.
- IP addresses
- Browsing history
- Any website you visit/Torrent you download
- DNS queries
We have carefully engineered our apps and VPN servers to categorically eliminate sensitive information. As a result, ExpressVPN can never be compelled to provide customer data that does not exist.
But what does ExpressVPN collect? This is what it logs:
- Which OS app you successfully activated
- Dates (not time) when you connected to ExpressVPN
- Your server location
- Data (MB) you used
Even though Turkey had to seize the ExpressVPN server which was part of a criminal investigation, the authorities were unable to retrieve any customer data.
In January 2017, ExpressVPN released a statement:
ExpressVPN does not and has never possessed any customer connection logs that would enable us to know which customer was using the specific IPs cited by the investigators.
These facts confirm their ‘No Logs’ policy and corroborates everything they have claimed in their logging and terms & condition pages.
DNS/IP Leak Tests – Can ExpressVPN be traced?
No, Since ExpressVPN is a leak-proof service, it cannot be traced by anyone. In fact, ExpressVPN offers IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks protection features. Also, it is clean from any viruses, malware, and Trojans.
IP Leak Test
Leaking IP address is a major issue with most VPN providers. Let’s see if ExpressVPN passed this test. I conducted the test using ipleak.net.
First, I managed to check with my original IP without ExpressVPN. As you can see, my original IP is publicly visible:
Now, I connected to ExpressVPN US server and as expected, the test result showed an IP address from New York, United States:
ExpressVPN didn’t leak my IP.
DNS Leak Test
It is important to check whether your IP is leaking or not before you go downloading Torrents or unblock a website. While it’s easy to neglect DNS tests, It is quite possible that your VPN provider might be leaking your DNS.
To run the DNS test on ExpressVPN, I logged into dnsleaktest.com before connecting to ExpressVPN. As you can see from the screenshot below, dnsleaktest.com is showing the DNS address my device is connecting to:
Now I performed the test again while connected to ExpressVPN’s US server. Now you can see that my default DNS address is swapped with a DNS address from the United States:
There you go, ExpressVPN clearly passed the DNS Test with excellence.
WebRTC Leaks Test
Lastly, I ran ExpressVPN through browserleaks.com to check whether it leaked my WebRTC information or not. Since I was connected to the US server of ExpressVPN for the test, the results below showed IP addresses associated with ExpressVPN’s servers:
Evidence that I did not encounter WebRTC leaks at all with ExpressVPN. To know more about different types of VPN leaks like IP, DNS, WebRTC and others, read our detailed VPN leak test guide.
I checked for viruses in the ExpressVPN Windows app file on virustotal.com. It yielded zero viruses. Here is the screenshot from their website:
Server locations – Does ExpressVPN have a good server network?
As I said earlier, the provider delivers its services through massive 3,000+ servers across 94 countries, with various server locations in each other. This is just perfect for anyone looking to bypass geo-restrictions. Compared to other VPNs, ExpressVPN has a multitude of servers in every continent be it Europe, Asia, and others.
The huge network of geographically diverse server locations has presence in some rare locations as well such as Venezuela, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macau, and Myanmar too. Connectivity is never a problem with the VPN and even if you encounter any issues, it is usually quite simple to solve when ExpressVPN isn’t working for you.
While the majority of the servers in ExpressVPN’s network are bare-metal, physical servers, a few of these are virtual. According to the company, less than 3% of the servers are virtual. The company claims that the decision to use virtual servers for some locations is based on the fact that physical servers sometimes fail to meet the rigorous standards of ExpressVPN. With virtual servers, ExpressVPN can guarantee high performance because the actual machines these servers are virtually created from meet the quality standards of the company while also allowing users to connect to such locations.
Moreover, one of the most distinguishing characteristic of ExpressVPN’s network is its use of RAM-only servers in contrast to hard disk-based servers that most providers use. As you probably know, information in hard disk is permanently stored whereas RAM is wiped out as soon as a system is powered off.
Therefore, any information related to the user (none of which is sensitive in ExpessVPN’s systems) is only available in real-time in the servers. This means that every time the servers are restarted and refreshed, all previous information is instantly deleted.
ExpressVPN calls its server technology TrustedServer and it indeed raises the bar of trust in the company’s privacy-focused stance towards the user.
Obfuscated Servers – Does ExpressVPN work in China?
ExpressVPN provides an efficient obfuscation feature that allows users to bypass severe online restrictions in various oppressive countries and enjoy fuller internet access. In the case of China, the VPN serves the local users by effectively circumventing the GFW (Great Firewall of China). It’s also one of the most powerful VPNs for obfuscation in our ExpressVPN China review.
Furthermore, with particular “Stealth Servers” located in Hong Kong, it allows users to bypass the GFW instantly and access Facebook, Snapchat, Tumblr, YouTube and almost every blocked site from within China. This is extremely helpful when forming a VPN connection in China in order to bypass geo-restrictions online and get wider internet access.
ExpressVPN Torrenting & P2P – Is ExpressVPN P2P compatible?
ExpressVPN is an excellent choice for P2P or torrenting activities as it allows torrenting on all of its servers. The fact that it is based in British Virgin Islands, combined with its zero-knowledge DNS, leak-proof performance, and no logging policy, the obvious conclusion is to regard ExpressVPN as one of the safest VPNs you can have for unblocking and downloading torrents.
Furthermore, as you’ll see in the speed test results below, ExpressVPN is extremely fast. Usually, VPN services have a negative effect on download speeds, which discourages users from downloading torrents while the VPN is enabled.
But ExpressVPN’s stable speeds that regularly max out by reaching close to your base connection makes it a perfect companion to be running in the background while you download torrents with a high degree of security.

Speed Test – Is ExpressVPN fast enough?
Well, as per speed testing results, ExpressVPN offers excellent download speeds. Now, getting to the most important part that concerns many people, how fast is ExpressVPN?
To conduct the ExpressVPN speed tests, I tested MANY different servers from around the world. My exact physical location is Utrecht, Netherlands and my current internet connection speed is 20 Mbps.
For this review on ExpressVPN I have compiled ExpressVPN speed test with pings, download speeds and upload speeds in Mbps in the table below.
|Server Location||Ping (MS)||Download (Mbps)||Upload (Mbps)||Decline by|
|East London, UK||143||16.54||11.92||20%|
|New Jersey, US||221||14.01||8.74||30%|
|Kansas City, US||244||15.13||8.85||25%|
All the speed tests were conducted using the ExpressVPN OpenVPN UDP / TCP protocol. Here are the screenshots:
As you can see, ExpressVPN managed to deliver excellent speeds for Netflix streaming, torrenting, and overall fast browsing. So ExpressVPN is definitely fast.
Is ExpressVPN good for gaming?
Thanks to ExpressVPN’s extensive server park and fast speeds, ExpressVPN is excellent for online gaming. Not only that, but ExpressVPN also offers powerful encryption and uses OpenVPN, TCP and UDP, which makes it fast enough for graphics-intensive competitive gaming.
How to get fastest speed with ExpressVPN?
The performance you get with a VPN largely depends on the location of the server you are connected to. ExpressVPN displays a recommended list of servers that are likely to perform the best for you. You can see this list in the server selection screen with the app.
Alternatively, the Smart Location feature automatically choose the fastest server for you on the basis of latency, proximity, and server load. You can also manually select any server of your choice by checking their latency and other factors as displayed in the server selection menu of all ExpressVPN’s desktop apps.
This makes it extremely convenient to choose a fast server, allowing you to maximize the performance of ExpressVPN in terms of speed and connectivity.
Streaming – Does ExpressVPN work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?
ExpressVPN is good for unblocking US Netflix. I performed extensive tests to check whether ExpressVPN unblocked Netflix or not using its different US server.
Below, I am streaming the movie Ex Machina with ExpressVPN’s New York server. There were no proxy errors, neither had I faced slow streaming. Worked 100% fine!
To access Netflix with ExpressVPN, you just ought to connect Express to a US server. Once you do that, open Netflix and start streaming! If you ever get any problem, just get help from ExpressVPN Chat Support 24/7. They will help you out.
Furthermore, ExpressVPN supports Kodi, and other streaming services as well such as Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime and other streaming services as well. We have also ranked ExpressVPN as #1 in our best VPNs for Streaming roundup!
Compatibility – Apps and Supported Devices on ExpressVPN
On the compatibility front, ExpressVPN has beaten its competitors by a long distance. Moreover, you can protect your five diverse devices with a single ExpressVPN account because it allows 5 simultaneous connections.
Here is the list of different platforms ExpressVPN apps support:
- iOS / Apple TV
- Gaming Consoles
ExpressVPN for Windows
Its Windows app is intuitive and easy to use. With a single click, you may select your desired server locations from anywhere. The desktop app is compatible with the different versions like Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Vista and Windows RT.
Server selection can be done in a lot of ways. You can let the app make the best decision for you by selecting a server based on speed, latency, and proximity. Or you can see the list of recommended servers that the app automatically generates for you based on analysis of best performing servers that will give you an optimum performance.
If you have a specific server location in mind, then you can ignore these recommendations and simply connect to whichever server appeals to you from its vast network. The search bar embedded within the app makes this super convenient. There’s also a Favorites list that you can generate by adding your preferred servers for easy accessibility later.
The speed test feature that will speed and measure other variables such as latency and provide a quick report of how its various servers stand in terms of these metrics. This greatly facilitates choosing which server you can expect the best performance from at any given time.
The settings tab allows you to choose from various protocols, enable or disable the kill switch, or set split-tunneling rules to control which apps should use the VPN and which apps should simply connect to the internet directly.
So, if you use the VPN for some apps such as BitTorrent clients but not for other activities, you can reserve the VPN for just your selected apps and leave everything else directly connected to the web.
However, the Windows and desktops apps of ExpressVPN in general are some of the most well-designed VPN clients you can find in the industry with a lot of user-facilitating features and powerful functionality.
ExpressVPN for Mac
The same goes for Mac as well. You can choose your preferred VPN server from the main screen by country or a city. The settings and other features such as Speed Tests are also retained in the Mac app just like in windows.
The app is highly responsive and extremely user-friendly. Furthermore, the app works on all Macbook and iMac models. The app delivers a secure VPN client for High Sierra, Yosemite, Maverick and other versions of macOS.
Also, you can use an exclusive built-in Network Lock feature to protect your online activities even if the app suddenly stops working for any reason. However, you may take huge benefit from other advantages like Smart Location that lets you connect to the best available location by default.
ExpressVPN for Linux
You can download and install ExpressVPN on your Linux device instantly. What makes this VPN standout from other VPNs is it’s easy to use the command-line interface. Establishing connection with a VPN server only requires you to type in a command in the interface.
In addition to this, the app is use-able on various 64-bit and 32-bit versions such as Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Raspbian and Arch too. The ExpressVPN Linux app also includes a built-in DNS leak protection that secures your DNS information completely.
ExpressVPN for Android
ExpressVPN’s Android app is highly impressive and works without any hassle. The app is light-weight and installed within a few minutes. You can use the app on different versions like Android 10, Oreo, Nougat, Marshmallow and Lollipop on 5 simultaneous connections at a time.
Like the Windows version, the app has a Location Picker that assists with choosing the best VPN server for your choice. However, it lacks the speed test feature available in the desktop apps which provides a quick overview with details of server parameters such as speed, load, latency etc.
Also, one of the most impressive and convenient features is the leak test tools embedded in the app. You can check for DNS and WebRTC leaks within the app environment without needing to use third-party website-based tools for these tests.
I particularly found the “Apps and Website Shortcuts” feature, which is basically a toolbar that can accommodate 5 shortcut icons to websites or apps that you generally visit with the VPN turned on. This expedites quick launching of your favorite apps directly from the ExpressVPN window.
Moreover, the settings tab offers similar features as for desktops with kill switch, split-tunneling, and protocols configurable. However, the Android app only supports OpenVPN UDP and TCP. It also lacks the IPv6 leak feature.
Furthermore, the app, overall, is very well-designed and offers enough features with smooth functionality to make it a pleasure to use ExpressVPN on Android.
ExpressVPN for iOS
The iOS app is compatible with all the latest iOS versions be it iOS 13, iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9, and iOS 8. It safeguards your iOS devices over LTE/4G, 3G, Wi-Fi, and other networks.
Moreover, the main screen is a neat interface containing the Location Picker, a menu button to access settings, and a connect button. The Location Picker offers the same functionality as in the desktop and Android apps, giving users the ability to choose a VPN server by country or city. You can also maintain a list of favorites as “Recent Connections”.
Unlike the Android app, you get a broader choice of protocols here with L2TP and IKEv2 along with OpenVPN. There are DNS and WebRTC leak tests that you can run with a single tap, which a very welcome feature for monitoring your own privacy levels.
Unfortunately, it lacks the kill switch available in the apps for other devices. However, it does come equipped with a configurable auto-connect feature to establish the connection back to your chosen server in case of an interruption.
All in all, ExpressVPN’s iOS app is extremely well-developed and offers much more than the bare essentials that most of the competition fails to go beyond on their dedicated iOS apps.
ExpressVPN browser extensions
Aside from offering router support and dedicated apps, ExpressVPN also offers extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers, and not just in a half-baked, run-of-the-mill way. The extensions are beautifully designed and offer more features than any most other VPN extensions in the market right now.
The extensions work as a front-end interface for the actual app in your computer. As a result, you can’t use these extensions as standalone add-ons. It is, nonetheless, extremely convenient to control the ExpressVPN client from the browser even if are limitations to these extensions.
It is commendable that rather than picking some of the features from desktop apps and sprinkling these within the browser extensions, ExpressVPN carefully adds browser-appropriate features that actually enhance the privacy of your browsers beyond simply masking your IP address.
For instance, both Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are equipped with WebRTC protection (since WebRTC leaks is entirely a browser-related issue). Since browsers also typically contain your geolocation data, it is important to force a match between the IP address of the server location you are connected to, and the pre-existing geolocation data in the browser.
ExpressVPN uses location spoofing in browser apps to ensure a match between your IP address and geolocation data so that websites can’t suspect that you are applying spoofing tricks. Websites that block VPN traffic can easily catch users if they find discrepancies between their browser geolocation and assumed IP address.
Moreover, HTTPS Everywhere automatically redirects you to HTTPS version of every website you visit even if you aren’t currently connected to ExpressVPN. Although this is a very simple feature but it can save you from hackers stealing your information and launching dangerous attacks on unsecured websites when you might least expect it.
Therefore, ExpressVPN’s browser extensions are valuable additions on their own and improve user experience substantially.
Pricing – How much does ExpressVPN cost per month/year?
There are 3 ExpressVPN pricing plans i.e. 1 Month, 6 Months, and 12 Months. So, on the 12-months pricing plan, you get to save 35%. These are:
As compared to other VPNs, ExpressVPN’s prices are indeed expensive but if you look at ExpressVPN features, it’s one of the best VPN service and it’s totally worth buying.
Is ExpressVPN Free?
ExpressVPN is not free. However, it does offer a 7-day free trial for iOS. In order to get the ExpressVPN free trial, you will have to provide credit details, however, the provider will not charge you until the end of your trial period.
When it comes to discussing its payment methods, ExpressVPN supports payment modes like Credit cards, PayPal and Bitcoin among others.
The service offers a 30-day money back guarantee to its users so If a subscriber is unsatisfied with its service, they can request a full refund.
However, if the refund is requested after 30 days, then it will provide a pro-data based refund of service fees for the time duration when VPN wasn’t working. Moreover, refunds are processed within seven days of a request through local currency or bitcoin.
Trustworthiness – Trust-pilot rating, Reddit reviews & Customer support
ExpressVPN has maintained an excellent presence on Trustpilot. The service has received 4000+ reviews in which 88% of users have rated their performance excellent.
ExpressVPN review Reddit
ExpressVPN has earned positive reviews mostly on Reddit. Different users on Reddit have praised ExpressVPN service for its apps, speeds, and customer support.
Here’s another user praising ExpressVPN’s splendid service.

Customer support is another area where ExpressVPN has outperformed other VPNs by a long distance. The service has divided the section into different subcategories. These subcategories are round the clock live chat support, email, ticketing, and FAQs.
Moreover, there are tons of troubleshooting guides and installation help articles on the support pages of the website. In the event that you can’t figure out how to install the VPN on your nifty new gaming console or just want to cancel your account, you’ll easily find relevant articles and guides that address your queries and concern on the official website.
However, if you can’t find the answers you are looking for on the support articles, you can directly reach out to the customer support team through email or live chat. In my experience, it took less than an hour to receive reply when I reached out with a question.
The live chat isn’t always available, but I found the people behind the live chat quite responsive, polite, and knowledgeable that promptly answer what you ask rather than beating about the bush and trying to hard sell the service.
In short, the customer support lives up to the standards we are given to expect from a provider that charges as much as ExpressVPN does. Also, the quality truly justifies the price.
Do I Recommend ExpressVPN?
Thus, based on all the capabilities evaluated in this ExpressVPN review, the higher pricing is quite easily justified for a VPN of ExpressVPN’s caliber. As such, it has earned a rating of 4.2 star rating overall.
