ExpressVPN is one of the most popular Virtual Private Network service in the industry. This VPN service is based in British Virgin Island (BVI) that is assumed as the safest country from users’ privacy perspectives. It surely is powerful and secure, but is it worth the price? To find out, I have conducted an extensive ExpressVPN Review.

ExpressVPN has 3000+ servers, which are ideal for unblocking Netflixtorrenting and other streaming services as well. In terms of compatibility, the VPN is compatible with all the major operating systems such as WindowsMacLinuxAndroidiOS, and a few other popular platforms discussed below in the detail.

When it comes to privacy, ExpressVPN delivers a comprehensive list of tunneling protocols including AES 256-bit military-grade encryptionTor compatibilitynetwork lock5 devices simultaneous connection at an expensive price of $8.32/mo with a lot of features that I have covered below in this review of ExpressVPN.

However, like other VPNs, this VPN has some pros and cons as well. This is why I analysed ExpressVPN through various extensive testings and gave a verdict with a 4.2 star rating in this ExpressVPN review for 2020.

Want a Quick Overview? Here’s What’s Important

  • Logs. It has a strict no-logging policy and even wipes off your session data the moment it ends.
  • Security. Best for security with it’s military grade encryption.
  • Streaming. Our #1 VPN for streaming. Unblocks almost all streaming services like Netflix, Hulu & more.
  • Speed. One of the fastest VPNs with seamless speeds. Here are the speed tests.
  • Geo-restrictions. Its huge server base helps bypass Geo-blocks everywhere. Even works flawlessly in China.

Here’s a video review of ExpressVPN if you don’t want to read through the whole blog.

Jurisdiction – Is ExpressVPN located in a safe country?

Rating: 5.0/5.0

Yes, ExpressVPN is located in a safe country i.e British Virgin Islands. What this essentially means is that ExpressVPN isn’t subject to the UK, US or other countries that are a part of the Fourteen Eyes (a group of of surveillance-sharing countries).

This is highly reassuring because even if we are to assume that ExpressVPN stores some information about users in their logs that could be potentially revealing, authorities and agencies lack the jurisdiction to legally request any information from the company’s BVI-based headquarters.

Although it is the privacy policy of a company that ultimately determines the level of privacy you can expect, a good jurisdiction precludes agencies with no respect for your privacy from snooping around and abusing their powers to access your information.

Security – How secure is ExpressVPN?

Rating: 4.5/5.0

ExpressVPN is totally secure due to its powerful AES 256-bit military grade encryption which offers the best security.

To be precise, the VPN implements AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) to encrypt the control channel, which passes control instructions for message transfers between the client (user) and the server (website/web service).

For the data channel, which contains the actual information about your activities, ExpressVPN uses the Diffie-Hellman key exchange as the symmetric encryption scheme.

Moreover, this encryption scheme takes advantage of outstanding mathematical complexity and the probability of breaking it so minuscule that even a supercomputer would take millions of trials before it can be figured out. Even that is an unusually best-case scenario for the poor hacker.

To further ensure the integrity of your information while it is in transit, the provider uses HMAC (keyed-Hash Message Authentication Code) authentication so that an attacker may not alter your information in real-time, effectively protecting from many kinds of malicious attacks.

Realizing the persistence and cleverness of modern hackers, ExpressVPN goes to even greater lengths to guard the privacy of your information. The company’s encryption system is characterized by perfect forward secrecy, whereby your encryption keys are automatically changed every 60 minutes and every time you connect to ExpressVPN.

With perfect forward secrecy, even if your keys are compromised, an attacker would only be able to get 60 minutes of your data at max. All your information from previous sessions as well as future sessions will still remain under a solid shroud of secrecy.

Moreover, protocols like PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP and OpenVPN UDP / TCP allow you a lot of options to choose from for how you want your VPN to establish communication with the internet. The recommended protocol, however, is OpenVPN UDP/TCP because this is the most robust of VPN protocols currently available.

The SHA-512 hashing algorithm with 4096-bit RSA certificate keys associated with OpenVPN performs server authentication in order to rule out possible MiTM (man-in-the-middle attacks).

Overall, ExpressVPN is an extremely strong package of security capable of defending you from various kinds of cyber-security threats.

Additional Security Features

Apart from common privacy benefits that most VPN providers offer, ExpressVPN has some amazing security features in its armory. Let us discuss them one by one:

ExpressVPN TOR Compatibility

Tor is quite popular among journalists, activists, and bloggers that want to protect their anonymity and their right to free speech without fearing backlash from the government.

ExpressVPN is fully compatible with Tor browser. Users that don’t want to risk their privacy in the slightest can take advantage of ExpressVPN’s compatibility with Tor and receive dual protection of the onion router plus the encrypted tunnels of the VPN.

To enable VPN over Tor, you will first need to connect to your favorite ExpressVPN server and then launch the Tor browser. It is important to follow these steps in the right order, as launching Tor before connecting to the VPN doesn’t provide the same anonymity and this functionality is not supported by ExpressVPN.

Does ExpressVPN have a kill switch? (ExpressVPN Network Lock)

ExpressVPN delivers a kill switch feature by the name of “Network lock”. If your VPN connection is interrupted for any reason, the kill switch will shut down your computer’s internet connection until the VPN is reestablished.

This mechanism makes sure that there’s not even a single packet of your data that slips through the internet from your computer without the envelop of ExpressVPN’s encryption system to guard it.

ExpressVPN-how-to-enable-Network-Lock-Feature

The ExpressVPN kill switch feature will protect all your internet traffic as long as online security is not restored. You can use kill switch on different apps like Windows, Mac, Linux, and routers too.

In my testing, the ExpressVPN kill switch worked flawlessly without any issues and responded swiftly to my attempts to close of the OpenVPN connection (for which I applied different tricks such as closing the UDP/TCP ports, launching a firewall etc.)

Zero-knowledge DNS

If you don’t know, you and I both use third-party DNS servers to access websites we want to visit. These third-party DNS servers log DNS queries whenever we try to access any site.

But with ExpressVPN’s Zero-Knowledge DNS feature, all of your DNS requests will be handled by private DNS servers owned by ExpressVPN. This is in stark contrast to the practice of many other VPN providers who use OpenDNS and other third-party DNS services.

Moreover, the problem with third-party DNS is that since these aren’t controlled by the VPN provider, they often lack the same level of encryption and tunneling. As a result, attackers can lie in wait for your DNS queries to appear on these substandard third-party solutions and compromise your security while you are under the illusion of being totally secure courtesy of the VPN.

However, with private DNS, ExpressVPN ensures that there are no loose ends or kinks left anywhere in the entire system that a hacker can exploit, giving you all-encompassing security and secrecy on the internet.

ExpressVPN Split tunneling

Split tunneling is a powerful feature that only a handful of premium VPN services offer. Fortunately, ExpressVPN supports this feature. in all but its iOS app.

Split tunneling allows you to select which apps will use the VPN connection, and which apps should directly connect to the internet, bypassing ExpessVPN’s. For instance, if you want to set all of your browsing traffic to pass through the VPN, but want to leave your video games out of the VPN network, then split-tunneling helps you bifurcate your VPN and non-VPN traffic.

ExpressVPN’s apps make it really simple to do so, giving you the option to simply select the applications that you want to be routed through ExpressVPN while leaving others to connect to the web directly.

Logging Policy – Does ExpressVPN keep logs?

ExpressVPN is a zero log VPN which means it does not keep logs.

Let’s discuss the ExpressVPN privacy policy in detail. The VPN does NOT log any of your activity or logging history or any personally identifiable information through your VPN connection. To be specific, it has clearly outlined in their logging policy that they never log:

  • IP addresses
  • Browsing history
  • Any website you visit/Torrent you download
  • DNS queries

From its privacy policy page:

We have carefully engineered our apps and VPN servers to categorically eliminate sensitive information. As a result, ExpressVPN can never be compelled to provide customer data that does not exist.

But what does ExpressVPN collect? This is what it logs:

  • Which OS app you successfully activated
  • Dates (not time) when you connected to ExpressVPN
  • Your server location
  • Data (MB) you used

By considering the above factors, it’s clear that ExpressVPN legitimately does not keep logs. However, I further managed to confirm the ExpressVPN privacy policy statements by reviewing the case of a ‘Turkish policeman that killed Russian ambassador’.

Even though Turkey had to seize the ExpressVPN server which was part of a criminal investigation, the authorities were unable to retrieve any customer data.

In January 2017, ExpressVPN released a statement:

ExpressVPN does not and has never possessed any customer connection logs that would enable us to know which customer was using the specific IPs cited by the investigators.

This incident, other than the fact that ExpressVPN’s privacy policy has been successfully audited by an independent organization PwC, shows that the policy is not mere words and empty statements.

These facts confirm their ‘No Logs’ policy and corroborates everything they have claimed in their logging and terms & condition pages.

DNS/IP Leak Tests – Can ExpressVPN be traced?

Rating: 5.0/5.0

No, Since ExpressVPN is a leak-proof service, it cannot be traced by anyone. In fact, ExpressVPN offers IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks protection features. Also, it is clean from any viruses, malware, and Trojans.

IP Leak Test

Leaking IP address is a major issue with most VPN providers. Let’s see if ExpressVPN passed this test. I conducted the test using ipleak.net.

First, I managed to check with my original IP without ExpressVPN. As you can see, my original IP is publicly visible:

ExpressVPN IP Leak Test with original IP address

Now, I connected to ExpressVPN US server and as expected, the test result showed an IP address from New York, United States:

ExpressVPN IP Leak Test with US IP Address

ExpressVPN didn’t leak my IP.

DNS Leak Test

It is important to check whether your IP is leaking or not before you go downloading Torrents or unblock a website. While it’s easy to neglect DNS tests, It is quite possible that your VPN provider might be leaking your DNS.

To run the DNS test on ExpressVPN, I logged into dnsleaktest.com before connecting to ExpressVPN. As you can see from the screenshot below, dnsleaktest.com is showing the DNS address my device is connecting to:

ExpressVPN DNS Leak Test with Original IP Address

Now I performed the test again while connected to ExpressVPN’s US server. Now you can see that my default DNS address is swapped with a DNS address from the United States:

ExpressVPN DNS Leak Test with US IP Address

There you go, ExpressVPN clearly passed the DNS Test with excellence.

WebRTC Leaks Test

Lastly, I ran ExpressVPN through browserleaks.com to check whether it leaked my WebRTC information or not. Since I was connected to the US server of ExpressVPN for the test, the results below showed IP addresses associated with ExpressVPN’s servers:

ExpressVPN WebRTC Leak Test on the US server

Evidence that I did not encounter WebRTC leaks at all with ExpressVPN. To know more about different types of VPN leaks like IP, DNS, WebRTC and others, read our detailed VPN leak test guide.

Virus Test

I checked for viruses in the ExpressVPN Windows app file on virustotal.com. It yielded zero viruses. Here is the screenshot from their website:

Test to check ExpressVPN app for viruses

Server locations – Does ExpressVPN have a good server network?

Rating: 4.0/5.0

As I said earlier, the provider delivers its services through massive 3,000+ servers across 94 countries, with various server locations in each other. This is just perfect for anyone looking to bypass geo-restrictions. Compared to other VPNs, ExpressVPN has a multitude of servers in every continent be it Europe, Asia, and others.

The huge network of geographically diverse server locations has presence in some rare locations as well such as Venezuela, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macau, and Myanmar too. Connectivity is never a problem with the VPN and even if you encounter any issues, it is usually quite simple to solve when ExpressVPN isn’t working for you.

While the majority of the servers in ExpressVPN’s network are bare-metal, physical servers, a few of these are virtual. According to the company, less than 3% of the servers are virtual. The company claims that the decision to use virtual servers for some locations is based on the fact that physical servers sometimes fail to meet the rigorous standards of ExpressVPN. With virtual servers, ExpressVPN can guarantee high performance because the actual machines these servers are virtually created from meet the quality standards of the company while also allowing users to connect to such locations.

Moreover, one of the most distinguishing characteristic of ExpressVPN’s network is its use of RAM-only servers in contrast to hard disk-based servers that most providers use. As you probably know, information in hard disk is permanently stored whereas RAM is wiped out as soon as a system is powered off.

Therefore, any information related to the user (none of which is sensitive in ExpessVPN’s systems) is only available in real-time in the servers. This means that every time the servers are restarted and refreshed, all previous information is instantly deleted.

ExpressVPN calls its server technology TrustedServer and it indeed raises the bar of trust in the company’s privacy-focused stance towards the user.

Obfuscated Servers – Does ExpressVPN work in China?

ExpressVPN provides an efficient obfuscation feature that allows users to bypass severe online restrictions in various oppressive countries and enjoy fuller internet access. In the case of China, the VPN serves the local users by effectively circumventing the GFW (Great Firewall of China). It’s also one of the most powerful VPNs for obfuscation in our ExpressVPN China review.

Furthermore, with  particular “Stealth Servers” located in Hong Kong, it allows users to bypass the GFW instantly and access Facebook, Snapchat, Tumblr, YouTube and almost every blocked site from within China. This is extremely helpful when forming a VPN connection in China in order to bypass geo-restrictions online and get wider internet access.

ExpressVPN Torrenting & P2P – Is ExpressVPN P2P compatible?

ExpressVPN is an excellent choice for P2P or torrenting activities as it allows torrenting on all of its servers. The fact that it is based in British Virgin Islands, combined with its zero-knowledge DNS, leak-proof performance, and no logging policy, the obvious conclusion is to regard ExpressVPN as one of the safest VPNs you can have for unblocking and downloading torrents.

Furthermore, as you’ll see in the speed test results below, ExpressVPN is extremely fast. Usually, VPN services have a negative effect on download speeds, which discourages users from downloading torrents while the VPN is enabled.

But ExpressVPN’s stable speeds that regularly max out by reaching close to your base connection makes it a perfect companion to be running in the background while you download torrents with a high degree of security.

Speed Test – Is ExpressVPN fast enough?

Rating: 4.0/5.0

Well, as per speed testing results, ExpressVPN offers excellent download speeds. Now, getting to the most important part that concerns many people, how fast is ExpressVPN?

To conduct the ExpressVPN speed tests, I tested MANY different servers from around the world. My exact physical location is Utrecht, Netherlands and my current internet connection speed is 20 Mbps.

For this review on ExpressVPN I have compiled ExpressVPN speed test with pings, download speeds and upload speeds in Mbps in the table below.

Server LocationPing (MS)Download (Mbps)Upload (Mbps)Decline by
Paris, France19218.528.3610%
East London, UK14316.5411.9220%
Frankfurt, Germany13017.1412.5915%
New Jersey, US22114.018.7430%
Kansas City, US24415.138.8525%

All the speed tests were conducted using the ExpressVPN OpenVPN  UDP / TCP protocol. Here are the screenshots:

ExpressVPN Download Upload Speeds with Pings on US UK Germany and France servers

As you can see, ExpressVPN managed to deliver excellent speeds for Netflix streaming, torrenting, and overall fast browsing. So ExpressVPN is definitely fast.

Is ExpressVPN good for gaming?

Thanks to ExpressVPN’s extensive server park and fast speeds, ExpressVPN is excellent for online gaming. Not only that, but ExpressVPN also offers powerful encryption and uses OpenVPN, TCP and UDP, which makes it fast enough for graphics-intensive competitive gaming.

How to get fastest speed with ExpressVPN?

The performance you get with a VPN largely depends on the location of the server you are connected to. ExpressVPN displays a recommended list of servers that are likely to perform the best for you. You can see this list in the server selection screen with the app.

Alternatively, the Smart Location feature automatically choose the fastest server for you on the basis of latency, proximity, and server load. You can also manually select any server of your choice by checking their latency and other factors as displayed in the server selection menu of all ExpressVPN’s desktop apps.

This makes it extremely convenient to choose a fast server, allowing you to maximize the performance of ExpressVPN in terms of speed and connectivity.

Streaming – Does ExpressVPN work with Netflix & Other VoD Services?

Rating: 4.2/5.0

ExpressVPN is good for unblocking US Netflix. I performed extensive tests to check whether ExpressVPN unblocked Netflix or not using its different US server.

Below, I am streaming the movie Ex Machina with ExpressVPN’s New York server. There were no proxy errors, neither had I faced slow streaming. Worked 100% fine!

ExpressVPN Netflix Streaming on New York Server

To access Netflix with ExpressVPN, you just ought to connect Express to a US server. Once you do that, open Netflix and start streaming! If you ever get any problem, just get help from ExpressVPN Chat Support 24/7. They will help you out.

Furthermore, ExpressVPN supports Kodi, and other streaming services as well such as Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime and other streaming services as well. We have also ranked ExpressVPN as #1 in our best VPNs for Streaming roundup!

It is also in the list of Kodi VPN & Fire TV stick VPN to boost your streaming experience.

Compatibility – Apps and Supported Devices on ExpressVPN

Rating: 4.0/5.0

On the compatibility front, ExpressVPN has beaten its competitors by a long distance. Moreover, you can protect your five diverse devices with a single ExpressVPN account because it allows 5 simultaneous connections.

Here is the list of different platforms ExpressVPN apps support:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux
  • Android
  • iOS / Apple TV
  • Routers
  • Gaming Consoles
  • PlayStation
  • Xbox

ExpressVPN compatible Apps for your favorite devices

ExpressVPN for Windows

Its Windows app is intuitive and easy to use. With a single click, you may select your desired server locations from anywhere.  The desktop app is compatible with the different versions like Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Vista and Windows RT.

Server selection can be done in a lot of ways. You can let the app make the best decision for you by selecting a server based on speed, latency, and proximity. Or you can see the list of recommended servers that the app automatically generates for you based on analysis of best performing servers that will give you an optimum performance.

If you have a specific server location in mind, then you can ignore these recommendations and simply connect to whichever server appeals to you from its vast network. The search bar embedded within the app makes this super convenient. There’s also a Favorites list that you can generate by adding your preferred servers for easy accessibility later.

The speed test feature that will speed and measure other variables such as latency and provide a quick report of how its various servers stand in terms of these metrics. This greatly facilitates choosing which server you can expect the best performance from at any given time.

The settings tab allows you to choose from various protocols, enable or disable the kill switch, or set split-tunneling rules to control which apps should use the VPN and which apps should simply connect to the internet directly.

So, if you use the VPN for some apps such as BitTorrent clients but not for other activities, you can reserve the VPN for just your selected apps and leave everything else directly connected to the web.

However, the Windows and desktops apps of ExpressVPN in general are some of the most well-designed VPN clients you can find in the industry with a lot of user-facilitating features and powerful functionality.

ExpressVPN for Mac

The same goes for Mac as well. You can choose your preferred VPN server from the main screen by country or a city. The settings and other features such as Speed Tests are also retained in the Mac app just like in windows.

The app is highly responsive and extremely user-friendly. Furthermore, the app works on all Macbook and iMac models. The app delivers a secure VPN client for High Sierra, Yosemite, Maverick and other versions of macOS.

Also, you can use an exclusive built-in Network Lock feature to protect your online activities even if the app suddenly stops working for any reason. However, you may take huge benefit from other advantages like Smart Location that lets you connect to the best available location by default.

ExpressVPN for Linux

You can download and install ExpressVPN on your Linux device instantly. What makes this VPN standout from other VPNs is it’s easy to use the command-line interface. Establishing connection with a VPN server only requires you to type in a command in the interface.

In addition to this, the app is use-able on various 64-bit and 32-bit versions such as Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Raspbian and Arch too. The ExpressVPN Linux app also includes a built-in DNS leak protection that secures your DNS information completely.

ExpressVPN for Android

ExpressVPN’s Android app is highly impressive and works without any hassle. The app is light-weight and installed within a few minutes. You can use the app on different versions like Android 10, Oreo, Nougat, Marshmallow and Lollipop on 5 simultaneous connections at a time.

Like the Windows version, the app has a Location Picker that assists with choosing the best VPN server for your choice. However, it lacks the speed test feature available in the desktop apps which provides a quick overview with details of server parameters such as speed, load, latency etc.

Also, one of the most impressive and convenient features is the leak test tools embedded in the app. You can check for DNS and WebRTC leaks within the app environment without needing to use third-party website-based tools for these tests.

I particularly found the “Apps and Website Shortcuts” feature, which is basically a toolbar that can accommodate 5 shortcut icons to websites or apps that you generally visit with the VPN turned on. This expedites quick launching of your favorite apps directly from the ExpressVPN window.

Moreover, the settings tab offers similar features as for desktops with kill switch, split-tunneling, and protocols configurable. However, the Android app only supports OpenVPN UDP and TCP. It also lacks the IPv6 leak feature.

Furthermore, the app, overall, is very well-designed and offers enough features with smooth functionality to make it a pleasure to use ExpressVPN on Android.

ExpressVPN for iOS

The iOS app is compatible with all the latest iOS versions be it iOS 13, iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9, and iOS 8. It safeguards your iOS devices over LTE/4G, 3G, Wi-Fi, and other networks.

Moreover, the main screen is a neat interface containing the Location Picker, a menu button to access settings, and a connect button. The Location Picker offers the same functionality as in the desktop and Android apps, giving users the ability to choose a VPN server by country or city. You can also maintain a list of favorites as “Recent Connections”.

Unlike the Android app, you get a broader choice of protocols here with L2TP and IKEv2 along with OpenVPN. There are DNS and WebRTC leak tests that you can run with a single tap, which a very welcome feature for monitoring your own privacy levels.

Unfortunately, it lacks the kill switch available in the apps for other devices. However, it does come equipped with a configurable auto-connect feature to establish the connection back to your chosen server in case of an interruption.

All in all, ExpressVPN’s iOS app is extremely well-developed and offers much more than the bare essentials that most of the competition fails to go beyond on their dedicated iOS apps.

ExpressVPN browser extensions

Aside from offering router support and dedicated apps, ExpressVPN also offers extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers, and not just in a half-baked, run-of-the-mill way. The extensions are beautifully designed and offer more features than any most other VPN extensions in the market right now.

The extensions work as a front-end interface for the actual app in your computer. As a result, you can’t use these extensions as standalone add-ons. It is, nonetheless, extremely convenient to control the ExpressVPN client from the browser even if are limitations to these extensions.

It is commendable that rather than picking some of the features from desktop apps and sprinkling these within the browser extensions, ExpressVPN carefully adds browser-appropriate features that actually enhance the privacy of your browsers beyond simply masking your IP address.

For instance, both Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are equipped with WebRTC protection (since WebRTC leaks is entirely a browser-related issue). Since browsers also typically contain your geolocation data, it is important to force a match between the IP address of the server location you are connected to, and the pre-existing geolocation data in the browser.

ExpressVPN uses location spoofing in browser apps to ensure a match between your IP address and geolocation data so that websites can’t suspect that you are applying spoofing tricks. Websites that block VPN traffic can easily catch users if they find discrepancies between their browser geolocation and assumed IP address.

Moreover, HTTPS Everywhere automatically redirects you to HTTPS version of every website you visit even if you aren’t currently connected to ExpressVPN. Although this is a very simple feature but it can save you from hackers stealing your information and launching dangerous attacks on unsecured websites when you might least expect it.

Therefore, ExpressVPN’s browser extensions are valuable additions on their own and improve user experience substantially.

Pricing – How much does ExpressVPN cost per month/year?

Rating: 3.3/5.0

There are 3 ExpressVPN pricing plans i.e. 1 Month, 6 Months, and 12 Months. So, on the 12-months pricing plan, you get to save 35%. These are:

ExpressVPN-Pricing-1-month-12-months-and-6-months

As compared to other VPNs, ExpressVPN’s prices are indeed expensive but if you look at ExpressVPN features, it’s one of the best VPN service and it’s totally worth buying.

Is ExpressVPN Free?

ExpressVPN is not free. However, it does offer a 7-day free trial for iOS. In order to get the ExpressVPN free trial, you will have to provide credit details, however, the provider will not charge you until the end of your trial period.

When it comes to discussing its payment methods, ExpressVPN supports payment modes like Credit cards, PayPal and Bitcoin among others.

ExpressVPN-supported-Payment-Methods

The service offers a 30-day money back guarantee to its users so If a subscriber is unsatisfied with its service, they can request a full refund.

However, if the refund is requested after 30 days, then it will provide a pro-data based refund of service fees for the time duration when VPN wasn’t working. Moreover, refunds are processed within seven days of a request through local currency or bitcoin.

Trustworthiness – Trust-pilot rating, Reddit reviews & Customer support

Rating: 4.5/5.0

ExpressVPN has maintained an excellent presence on Trustpilot. The service has received 4000+ reviews in which 88% of users have rated their performance excellent.

Customer Support

Customer support is another area where ExpressVPN has outperformed other VPNs by a long distance. The service has divided the section into different subcategories. These subcategories are round the clock live chat support, email, ticketing, and FAQs.

ExpressVPN Customer Support trouble shooting and setup guides

Moreover, there are tons of troubleshooting guides and installation help articles on the support pages of the website. In the event that you can’t figure out how to install the VPN on your nifty new gaming console or just want to cancel your account, you’ll easily find relevant articles and guides that address your queries and concern on the official website.

However, if you can’t find the answers you are looking for on the support articles, you can directly reach out to the customer support team through email or live chat. In my experience, it took less than an hour to receive reply when I reached out with a question.

The live chat isn’t always available, but I found the people behind the live chat quite responsive, polite, and knowledgeable that promptly answer what you ask rather than beating about the bush and trying to hard sell the service.

In short, the customer support lives up to the standards we are given to expect from a provider that charges as much as ExpressVPN does. Also, the quality truly justifies the price.

Do I Recommend ExpressVPN?

Yes, I definitely recommend ExpressVPN. ExpressVPN delivers a punchy performance and offers numerous features like, unblocking Netflix, reliable torrenting, excellent privacy policy, tunneling protocols, unlimited bandwidth, 3000+ super-fast servers, 30 day money back guarantee, Bitcoin Payments, and powerful encryption as well. All these features make it ideal for a VPN user.

Thus, based on all the capabilities evaluated in this ExpressVPN review, the higher pricing is quite easily justified for a VPN of ExpressVPN’s caliber. As such, it has earned a rating of 4.2 star rating overall.

The ExpressVPN video review was quite useful. I made a purchase yesterday. Hoping that it will help me stream US Netflix in Germany. Thanks. I want to ask if PPTP is secure or not

    • Osama Tahir says:

      Hi Antonio,

Thank you for the kind words.

PPTP is not considered a secure choice anymore. Whenever possible, please stick with protocols like OpenVPN and IKEv2. PPTP and L2TP are outdated and they don’t offer the same level of protection as modern protocols.

      We’re glad you’re enjoying ExpressVPN!

  2. Sina orian says:

Been using expressvpn for netflix and hulu streaming and it works great for me. However its a little expensive and costly. If you have any deals or discounts please send an email i will be thankful

    • Osama Tahir says:

      Hi Sina,

      Thank you for your feedback!

Unfortunately, ExpressVPN rarely offers any deals and discounts, but we will surely update information on this page if they bring any new offers.

      Take care of yourself!

  3. Guy fawkes says:

ExpressVPN is indeed the best VPN for China. Its the only VPN that works in China. I’m satisfied with expressvpns performance. Good review on expressvpn

    • Abdul Rehman says:

      Hey there!
I couldn’t agree more with you. ExpressVPN is certainly the best. But if you want to try some other VPN service, then you might want to check out PureVPN. We’ve extensively tested the service in China and it works quite well. It also offers 12 actual servers in Beijing and Shanghai China.

  4. Alex Rich says:

Expressvpn is the only reliable VPN for china. Its the only one that works. So yeah its worth the price for me. Comes handy since everything is censored in china

Yes, Alex. ExpressVPN works great in China but they don’t have servers in the Mainland. In fact, it has 3 servers in Hong Kong. If you’re outside of China and want to access Chinese websites/content, you will need to connect to the Hong Kong server and it will work perfectly.

  5. Dr. Robie says:

Very odd thing with ExpressVPN. Have checked this using multiple firewalls that show all outbound connections (e.g. Comodo). Even when not on the VPN their software is making dozens of connections with Akamai and Amazonaws. Starts as soon as you boot up your computer. I’m talking a consistent 20 – 40 connections! Close them out, they quickly re-open. Until I know what is being transmitted by ExpressVPN software to those entities I wouldn’t trust these guys for a second. Hope the author of this article checks this out, would really like some answers.

    • Abdul Rehman says:

Hey Robie, that’s strange. It shouldn’t make such connections. That’s quite odd. I’ve done a bit of testing and couldn’t find any connections establishing with both Akamai and Amazonaws while running the latest version of ExpressVPN. I suggest looking up the extensions installed on your browser. Probably you must have accidentally installed some malicious extension that’s running on the background.

      • Janey says:

You can see some screen clips of this problem on the twitter posts given below. Not an extension problem, in fact will see this occur whether or not a browser is even open. It starts from the moment the computers are booted up and does not end. Further, have observed this on 2 separate computers, one that was brand new, everything installed fresh, so next to impossible for it to be a malware problem. Despite that have done checks with Defender, Kaspersky, virustotal, there’s no infection on these machines. Several contacts with ExpressVPN about it, have received no answer or explanation as to what the heck is going on with this. Cant wait till the 15 month subscription with them is done, be rid of whatever the heck’s going on with there software. What use is ‘no logs’ when everything you do is relayed to Akamai??? It’s an issue.

  6. SM says:

The reviews all over the web are FAR overhyped for this. it’s rare that I EVER get over 50% of my ISP speed.

VPN tunneling is just plain broken. It absolutely refuses to work correctly when playing some games. I set it to have only my web browsers and torrent app to use the VPN. It just crashes Blizzard games as soon as they are launched. They should remove the so-called “feature” if it just plain doesn’t work. I bought it 6 months ago to try it and then canceled it because this didn’t work at all. I upgraded to Windows 10, bought it again and the speeds were some better so I kept it. But I pretty much never get over about 150 Mbps using it, and I pay my ISP for a 300 Mbps connection. The reviews are deplorably wrong, I defy people to actually start doing some sustained testing and keep track of their results. This ExpressVPN is not really any faster than the others.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear SM,
Thanks for providing your valuable feedback to us.
      Cheers!!!

  7. Paul says:

ExpressVPN has been down in China since 29th September

    • Shahmeer Baloch says:

Hey Paul, yes. They have strengthened their VPN Ban policy for the past 4 days ahead of the Trade Shows. But you can always use PureVPN or NordVPN for that matter. I have tested and they are currently working in China

  8. Leroy Jenkins says:

I am using Express for a while now. The speed is good, the servers don’t break down that often and everything else is fine and dandy. They get a thumbs up from me

    • Shahmeer Baloch says:

Hello Leroy, I totally agree. ExpressVPN is fast, reliable, and is based in British Virgin Islands which doesn’t have data retention laws. Best for you to have it.

  9. Usman Hayat says:

    Dear Benedict,
    Thanks for the feedback,
We are sorry that the service did not come up to your expectations. However, you should not stop using the service because you have to secure your online privacy at any cost.
    Cheers!!!

    • Talaverde says:

What? Were you being sarcastic? I’m finding the hype over ExpressVPN to be unbelievable… meaning, I just an’t believe it’s true. I think ExpressVPN is just a master at marketing. I tried their service. I cancelled it because it was mediocre. Not bad, but nothing special. I don’t get why every review says it’s the greatest thing ever. It’s simply too good to be true.

  10. Juan says:

My ISP sucks and caps my data so ExpressVPN is a good way to avoid those slow speeds. Servers are stable, fast, and the service itself is great.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Juan,
Thanks for reaching out to us, we are glad that you found ExpressVPN helpful. Yes, you are right. The service offers faster speed along with extensive spread of servers.
      Cheers!!!

  11. mania says:

Great choice for the average user who wants fast speeds, quick connections, and a lot of different server to choose from.
Really like the service. I particulary like the Kill Switch they added to the Mac and Windows app. when is that coming to mobile?

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Mania,
We are happy that ExpressVPN is offering you fast speeds along with huge server network. Yes, you are right.

      Cheers!!!

  12. Irek says:

I acutally signed up for ExpressVPN using bitcoin, and now I use the service in conjuction with the Tor network. Good luck finding me.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Irek,
      Thanks for the feedback,
We are glad that you signed up for ExpressVPN through BitCoin. Likewise, you are the using the service along with TOR network.

  13. Ile says:

Really like the service. I particulary like the Kill Switch they added to the Mac and Windows app. when is that coming to mobile?

    • Shahmeer Baloch says:

Hey LEE, ExpressVPN has added Kill Switch feature into its Mobile app. So cheers!

  14. Julyian says:

Acutally works. Unlike other services that leak your IP, ExpressVPN’s servers are incredibly secure.

    • Abdul Rehman says:

      Hey Julyian,
Glad you’re enjoying ExpressVPN. We test ExpressVPN periodically and have never come across any leaks. It is truly a well built VPN service.

  15. Clay says:

Their android app has always been fast. Never experienced in sudden drops either. I’ve had the app for 5 months now.

  16. Dwin says:

Got this VPN for China. FB, YT, Gmail et al work great. just make sure you connect to the HK locations if you’re browsing.

  17. John says:

I spent a lot of time waiting around at airports so i’ve used my fair share of VPNs. ExpressVPN is the only i’ve used that acutally maintains the same speeds whether on browsing on the vpn or not.

  18. Tibor says:

It’s more expensive than other VPNs but the service is top tier. They run OpenVPN, which is perfect for streaming and online gaming.

    • Aazim Akhtar says:

      Hi Tibor,

ExpressVPN is slightly heavy on your wallet, but it does offer great performance. I am happy that you found the provider appealing.

  19. Bobby says:

Works great in Beijing. This is by far the best vpn for the people in China. HK servers are well worth the price of admission.

  20. LetM. says:

I use ExpressVPN everytime I go on Xbox Live. It helps secure my connection and if I’m lucky it even sometimes improves the speeds.

  21. Feron says:

Expressvpn’s windows app preforms very well. I’ll probablly install in on my phone too. For now I am very happy with the service.

  22. Micha says:

Love it. Landed on ExpressVPN after i was reffered by a friend of mine. This app is way better than cyberghost. They offer a ton of locations and every server is secure and fast.

  23. Adrian says:

Wheter you care about your privacy or not, this app is great. Aside from encrypting your internet, it also lets you browse blocked sites and download faster.

  24. aky Z. says:

Best service bar none. I’ve used a bunch of different VPN in my time and this is easiily the best. Their customer service has been super helpful and i had no problems installing the app. Plenty of locations to choose from as well.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear aky Z.
Thanks for the feedback, We are glad that you found ExpressVPN quite helpful. Keep using ExpressVPN and enjoy online freedom from anywhere.
      Cheers!!!

  25. Justin says:

I vote for ExpressVPN when it comes to torrenting because it’s not based in US or EU, has a kill switch, doesn’t keep traffic logs, and is fast as hell.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Justin,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
We are happy that you opted ExpressVPN to accomplish your streaming needs.
      Cheers!!!

  26. Juan says:

ExpressVPN is the best! I tried a bunch of diff vpns while in China and Expressvpn was the most reliable. They have a bunch of different server locations in Asia too.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Juan,
      Thanks for the feedback,

  28. Chris says:

After some research, I decided to try a week for free with ExpressVPN to make sure it was worth the monthly fee. Turns out it really is worth is, so I picked an annual payment plan and haven’t looked back on my decision. The app does a great job keeping my data private.

  29. Nathaniel Elam says:

I really do like ExpressVPN. But there is one thing I have to deduct points for. Their Linux app totally lacks a GUI. If you want to use ExpressVPN on Linux you must use the CLI to connect and disconnect.

As a business traveler I frequently use Linux because of its enhanced security and privacy qualities. That ExpressVPN would think that a GUI is not required to have a good product in 2017 is really lame.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Nathaniel Elam,
Thanks for highlighting the flaw, you should download and install the updated Linux app to continue enjoying online freedom from anywhere.
      Cheers!!!

  30. Ranko says:

If you really want to make the most out of the internet you need this app. I use it to be able to watch all the videos, listen to the music, and download the games i wouldn’t normally be able to. It really does its job.

      Thanks for the feedback,

  31. Ivan says:

Works better on my computer than my phone, but no complaining. Made it possible for me to go through 3 months of backpacking in southest asia and connecting to the sketchiest wifi. I kept the service because of the privacy thing, that it’s becoming more and more a concern of mine.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Ivan,
Thanks for reaching out to us!

  33. Nino says:

LOVE IT! Wouldn’t be able to live without the ” Great Firewall ” if wasn’t for it. From reading my emails to watching youtube videos, this vpn saves the day. After reading about all sort of privacy concerns online, I decided to give this vpn a go and I don’t regret. It does make browsing a bit slower, but I feel better knowing that it’s harder for people to spy on me. I’ve also taken other measures to protect my data, but having a vpn is by far one of the easiest ways to do it.

    • Usman Hayat says:

ExpressVPN has a server in Venezuela. Why? I don’t know but always be prepared I guess

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Carol,
ExpressVPN does not offer its server in Venezuela at the moment. According to their customer support,

  40. Harlie West says:

I never thought I would be saying this but with more money, you do get better quality. I have tried many vpns before coming onto expressvpn. I always rejected them because of their ridiculous price. But now that I am using their service, its clear why they charge so high. The performance is unmatched to any other vpn I have used before!

  41. Kewin says:

ExpressVPN was great before but now that it has a network lock and adds more simultaneous devices I’m not sure how others can even compete.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Kewin,
You have made a valid point because ExpressVPN has added more servers along with other salient features.
It has become a daunting task for other VPN services to compete with ExpressVPN.

When I moved back to china after completing studies from the UK, I can’t access my Netflix account any more. That being said the chines government just hate the internet and don’t let us access anything from the outside world. My Netflix, fb, my twitter, my gmail, my instagram and snapshot were all blocked. I bought ExpressVPN two months ago based on its ability to unblock Netflix ( I can’t live without it). I love the services because it allows me to access all my social apps and I can watch my favourite shows on Netflix not only in UK but also the US library

    • Usman Hayat says:

No need to look on reddit and other big networks for good reviews of ExpressVPN or any other VPN service because there are lots of spammers. ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN Provider i Know, This is the reason it give 30 days’ money back guaranty. I just start using it after frustrated from free vpn proxies which are full of ads. The Best thing which i like about ExpressVPN is its speed. I did not face any issue of watching any Geo-restricted channel after suing this vpn provider.

P.S. I’m sure glad I’m not a robot but 4real robot testers are getting so old and lame…. I’m just saying.

We are delighted to see that ExpressVPN came up with your expectations. Keep using ExpressVPN and enjoy complete online freedom.

  62. Ervine says:

ExpressVPN and I go way back. The first time I ever used a VPN was a no cost service that my colleague told me about when we went to China for a business conference. My friend and I decided that we needed some good old american entertainment to cool off after our intense days of negotiation. We would switch on our VPN and unblock Netflix, and spent hours watching movies. We binge watched entire seasons after unblocking geo-restricted websites.

We never had any problems, thanks to the 78 ExpressVPN servers. We would use a different VPN server every day and we never had any problems bypassing the great firewall. The best bit was that we could unblock Netflix US. I’d read about it in a few ExpressVPN reviews but we’d never tried this out back home in Australia and the kids were psyched when I got back home and told him that they could unblock all the movies and shows on Netflix US using ExpressVPN.

Logged in to post this comment because I’ve got a friend at work who uses another VPN service and is complaining about streaming speeds and payment issues with the service every second day. But I always say that my less-than-a-hundred ExpressVPN servers are a million times better than his hundreds.

    • admin says:

      Hello Ervine,

Thank you for sharing your valuable experience with us.

      Kind Regards,
      VPNRanks

  63. Philips says:

Absolutely thrilled by the fact that ExpressVPN provides a 30 day money back guarantee, but just cannot fathom the idea of it being a bit too pricy for an average VPN user. I do understand that a decent VPN service costs you $5-$6 per month, but I think it is a bit pricy for me. Nonetheless, the features described in this ExpressVPN review somehow justify the prices it charges its customers with. Would love to try it in the future for streaming purposes. Was on their website and noted that they provide endless streaming to their users without limiting their bandwidth data. I think that is awesome on the part of VPN service!

    • admin says:

      Hello Philips,

Thank you for your valuable feedback.

      Kind Regards,
      VPNRanks

  64. Josh Summers says:

I’ve spoken with many VPN companies who have told me that offering “Free trials” is just asking for abuse. It makes much more sense to offer a 30-day guarantee as long as they honor that guarantee…and ExpressVPN does that. I’ve been using them for a while and I’ve enjoyed their service.

To supplement this review I thought you might be interested in my video review of ExpressVPN that walks through some of what you’ve talked about here as well as showing the VPN in action.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9jK5IHPY4Q

Thanks for the great review, Arsalan! Keep up the good work.

    • Usman Hayat says:

      Dear Josh,
Many thanks for your valuable feedback, your appreciation means a lot to us.

  65. Arsalan Jabbar says:

You’re welcome Loay. Yes! You must inquire from customer support before making your purchase decision and even after the purchase decision because VPN is a sophisticated tools and not everyone is tech-savvy to handle concerns encountered – if any. This is the reason people prefer service providers that offer 24/7 live support.
