Urban VPN is a product of Urban Cyber Security and is based in the US.

It is a free peer-to-peer VPN having servers in 87 countries. It doesn’t have a premium version so you can use all of these servers in its free version.

Its server speed is just about average, but the good thing is, you can access US Netflix with these servers.

It’s privacy policy is a bit shady. They do keep logs actually and your web browsing history. So, this puts it in the red zone.

If you want to protect your online privacy at less price but want great features, then PureVPN or Surfshark is really the best choice.

My Rating Criteria

Pricing – How much is Urban VPN?

Urban VPN is an absolutely free VPN that doesn’t have any premium version.

It doesn’t have any hidden charges nor does it ask for money to upgrade its free plan.

Here is the link where you can download its free version.

However, free VPNs have tons of limitations. Check out our list of VPN deals 2019 and get premium VPNs at discounted rates to browse and stream without any restrictions!

Security – Protocols, Encryption & Features

Urban has a weak encryption. Like Hola VPN, it uses Peer-to-Peer VPN network.

It uses users’ device and make it accessible as a server for all users. It only uses those device that are turned off but are plugged to the electricity.

Your data can be hacked using this service.

Jurisdiction – Does it Belong to Five Eyes Country?

Urban VPN is a US-based VPN service. This is the reason they have to abide by mandatory US data retention laws.

US is a part of 5 eyes country, which means if the US authorities ask for any users’ information then the company has to follow the law and has to give away the information.

In this scenario, you had better explore our guide that discusses the consequences of using VPN services based in 5 eyes, 9 eyes, and 14 eyes countries.

Servers

It has servers in 87 countries, which is a lot considering it offers a free VPN service.

It also highlights its top VPN locations. These include US, France, Canada, Argentina, and Belgium.

Obfuscation servers

It does offer an obfuscation server that is why it gives you the freedom to connect with China and UAE servers.

These countries have the toughest internet restrictions, and to avoid that they have obfuscation servers.

Check out our obfuscation server guide to know how it works.

Speed – How Fast is Urban VPN?

The server speed of Urban VPN is just average. I connected to its US server to check for its speed.

For testing purpose, I used 31 Mbps internet connection.

After connecting to their US server (LA), my internet speed went down to 13.76 Mbps.

Streaming – Does it Work with Netflix?

The first time I have ever seen a free VPN unblocking US Netflix. Yes, it does unblock US Netflix.

I tried to watch “The Incredibles 2” by connecting to its US Atlanta server.

Luckily, I was able to watch the movie without facing any issue.

Besides Netflix, you can use a VPN to unblock other streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime and Kodi as well.

For using amazon prime without restrictions, you can use a good VPN service for amazon prime.

For free streaming, you can use a free VPN Kodi service to watch your favorite content on Kodi. This guide is related to Kodi setup VPN.

Torrenting

This Urban VPN review discloses that the service has not provided information about torrenting. It is still unclear if the service supports torrenting activities of its users or not.

Leaks – IP, DNS, WebRTC, & Virus Test

I tested its IP leak, DNS leak, and WebRTC leak protection feature with different privacy testing tools. It passed all the tests.

I connected to the same US server. Here are the test results:

Trustworthiness – Logging Policy & Customer Support

My urban VPN review unveils that the service does keep logs of its users.

Here is a list of data they collection as per their privacy policy:

  • Personal information (IP address)
  • Web browsing history
  • Contact information
  • Technical data (device type, browser, access time, date, etc)

All of these above mentioned information are critical to your online privacy.

Likewise, the service follows GDPR guidelines in the right way.

If you want to know about logging policies of VPNs other than Urban VPN, read this informative guide.

Customer Support

Its customer support is not so good. The only way you can contact their support staff is by email i.e. privacy@urban-vpn.com.

At present, the provider does not offer numerous support options. A live chat option would be a great addition.

Compatibility – Apps & Supported Devices

I found in this Urban VPN review that it is compatible with only Windows, Android, Chrome, and Firefox.

It does not have a dedicated app for iOS or Mac. It says it’s ‘coming soon’.

You can find it Android app on Google Play Store.

Alternatives to Urban VPN

In case you do not want to continue using the service, you can use try out other VPNs that includes:

Do I Recommend Urban VPN?

Yes, I recommend using Urban VPN.

Having a VPN service free of cost, Urban VPN provides connection to 87 countries. None of the free service providers offer such a massive number of VPN locations.

It does not leak IP or DNS, neither it has viruses on its Windows client that tracks your IP address.

The only feature I dislike is its privacy policy. It does track your web history and that is why it comes for free.

If you’re not too concerned about your online privacy, then Urban VPN seems the best choice.
