SetupVPN Review 2019 – Too Many False Promises

SetupVPN is a free and premium VPN having fast server speed. It has 100+ server locations, but doesn't unblock Netflix. It also has a strong SSL-encryption & earns 3 Stars rating.

Based inUnited States
Servers100 Server Locations
Multi Login1

SetupVPN is a brainchild of US based VPN service called VPN1. It offers a free version and a premium version.

It is indeed a good VPN for streaming purposes because it has fast servers and a decent SSL-based encryption.

It does keep track of your browsing history, but doesn’t sell it to third-parties. It is compatible with all major operating systems and offers over 100 server locations.

If you want to keep your online privacy protected and at the same time want an affordable VPN service, then try Surfshark or PureVPN.

My Rating Criteria

These are the 8 factors that I have used to review SetupVPN:

Pricing – How much does SetupVPN cost?

SetupVPN has a free and a premium version. Its premium version is also affordable.

There are many pricing plans, but I will be discussing only 3 of them:

There is no refund policy for its premium version because it does offer a lifetime free SetupVPN plan.

Payment Methods

As per this Chrome SetupVPN review, you can pay your dues through various online payment options. These are:

  • PayPal
  • Visa & other debit cards
  • Bitcoin & other cryptocurrencies

Security – Encryption & features

SetupVPN uses a standard SSL-based encryption to encrypt data between the server and a client.

It doesn’t specify the type of protocols it would be using so I can’t really say if its security is compromised or not.

Jurisdiction –Is it located in a 5-eyes country?

SetupVPN is based in the United States that falls under 5 eyes intelligence sharing nation.

These are the countries that shares intelligence information between member countries. They have the authority to ask companies (that falls under their jurisdiction) to provide users’ information.

Companies normally oblige according to the law of their state. So your information is never safe with these countries.

Find out the VPN jurisdiction of your preferred VPN service.

SetupVPN does deliver 100 servers in all the leading countries globally.

Still, SetupVPN has not described about how many servers are physical or virtual. Therefore, you have no options left other than reading VPN server locations guide.

According to SetupVPN lifetime free VPN review, you can choose any server of your choice from the list of 18 servers from its free version.

If you want to connect to its other servers, you will need to subscribe to the service first.

Speed – How fast is SetupVPN?

SetupVPN offers good speed despite being a free VPN. I tested for its speed while connecting to their Japan server.

My internet speed before connecting to SetupVPN was around 32 Mbps, but after I connected to their Japan server, it dropped to only 18.33 Mbps.

Here are the test results:

Streaming –Does it work with Netflix?

SetupVPN does not offer US Netflix media streaming facility. For that purpose, you will have to find out some of the best VPNs for Netflix described in our guide.

When I tested for Netflix, I was shown with this error:

SetupVPN does not support P2P torrenting on its servers. They do not mention anywhere on its website.

So beware whenever you try to download torrents from their server because your personal IP may be revealed.

For that reason, you may check out our torrenting VPN guide.

It does not help users in unblocking other services like BBC iPlayer, Hulu and Kodi.

Being a Kodi user, you will have to depend on using VPN with Kodi service to start streaming live TV channels.

Leaks – Does it leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?

SetupVPN clearly passed the leak test. I tested for any leaks for IP, DNS, and WebRTC using its Japan server.

Here is what the test results say.

IP Test

DNS Test & WebRTC Test

Virus Test

In this SetupVPN review, I did not find any viruses on its Windows client file. I scanned for viruses using Virustotal.com to see if the service exposes any malware or not.

Here you see the test result:

Trustworthiness – Logs and customer support

As per this SetupVPN review, I found that it does collect your web logs and keeps track of your IP address.

These are the information they collect:

  • Email address
  • Home address
  • Telephone
  • Web history
  • IP address
  • access time
  • Website address

All of these information are critical to your online privacy. But the most important part is, they collect your home address and website address.

If you happen to visit any website for illegal streaming, then they might know and inform authorities or worse.

Find out if your VPN logs data or not.

Customer Support

The only way to contact their customer support staff is through email at support@setupvpn.com.

You can also send them a post on their mailing address: VPN1 LLC, 815 Ponce De Leon Blvd P209, 33134 Coral Gables, Florida, USA

Compatibility – Apps and supported devices

You may download and install the service on different platforms including Windows, Mac, Android, and Linux.

It does not have a specific app for iOS platform, which is unfortunate. It also has a Chrome and Firefox extension.

Final Verdict

Yes, I recommend using SetupVPN.

It is a free VPN with fast speed. There aren’t many VPNs (including premiums) that offer fast speed, but SetupVPN is one of them.

It offers 100 server locations in many countries and is compatible with many leading operating system such as Linux, Windows, and Android.

Its privacy policy is a bit sketchy, but this is what you get when something’s free.

Overall, it is a good VPN for streaming anonymously but it isn’t something known for protecting your online privacy.
