Hola VPN Review 2019
NordVPN is not recommended for any user who happens to protect their online privacy. It tracks your IP address and uses weak encryption. For the price of $6.99/mo, it earns a 1 Star rating.
Hola Unblocker is a free and premium VPN that is used to unblock websites and claims to have 196 million users around the world.
I strictly recommend against buying Hola VPN as it causes a serious threat to your online privacy. What good is a VPN if it doesn’t keep your identity anonymous? Think of it.

My Rating Criteria
These are the factors that I have used to review Hola VPN. Have a look at these factors:
- Pricing – How much does Hola VPN cost?
- Security – Encryption & features
- Jurisdiction –Is it located in a 5-eyes country?
- Speed – How fast is Hola VPN?
- Streaming –Does it work with Netflix?
- Leaks – Does it leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?
- Trustworthiness – Logs and customer support
- Compatibility – Apps and supported devices
Pricing – How much does Hola VPN cost?
Hola is a free VPN unblocker but it also offers a premium version with 3 different pricing plans. I have listed them below:
The free version of Hola has all the features offered by the VPN, except it does not give permission to use it on multiple browsers, and your IP address is shared by other users.
If you do not want your IP address shared by other users, you better use a premium version of Hola. Hola premium version will further give you security with SSL encryption.
I also found in this Hola VPN reviews that it currently offers a 30-days money-back guarantee.
Here is a list of payment options offered by Hola VPN:
Security – Encryption & features
Hola Unblocker does not use a tunneling protocol to encrypt your data. Instead, it utilizes a peer-to-peer network to mask your online identity.
Consequently, the lack of encryption means there is always a safety risk with Hola VPN. This service only hides your actual IP address without providing you a layer of an added security.
Jurisdiction –Is it located in a 5-eyes country?
Hola VPN is based in Israel, a country that does not fall under 5 eyes, 9 eyes, or 14 eyes country.
However, Israel is a staunch supporter of 5 eyes country and does support them in sharing intelligence. This is why Hola VPN is not a safe VPN to use.
If authorities come asking Hola VPN users’ information, it could handover your data as easily.
Hola VPN doesn’t have servers. It is a peer-to-peer VPN that uses its users’ device and not servers to route data.
It claims that it only uses a user as a proxy and does not take valuable resources from these users. Hard to imagine isn’t it?
If a users’ device is idle, it would make it as a proxy so a thousands of users could access the server. Not a very good thinking.
Speed – How fast is Hola VPN?
Hola VPN speed is too slow. I do not recommend it for streaming or downloading anything with this VPN service.
Before I connected to their US destination, my internet speed was 33 Mbps. But after I connected to Hola VPN, my internet speed went down to 5.67 Mbps. That is incredibly slow.
Here is the speed test results:
Streaming –Does it work with Netflix?
Hola VPN does not work with Netflix or unblocks in any way. In fact, Hola VPN has stopped working with Netflix a long time now.
Back in the day, when Netflix was not cracking down VPN services, many Netflix users would use Hole Unblocker to access their favorite show or movie. However, that is not the case anymore!
It does not work for downloading torrents as well. Your ISPs can easily detect the use of a torrent.
However, it happens to work great with Kodi media player with its Windows and Android app.
It unblocks Live TV channels that can be watched easily on Kodi.
There is a complete list of Kodi streaming guide that help you choose the best VPN to run with Kodi.
Leaks – Does it leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?
Hola VPN does not leak any IP. I tested for any leaks using Hola VPN US destination.
Here is what the test results show:
I also checked if there were any viruses in its Windows client so I ran a virus test. There were no Hola VPN viruses found in their files.
Trustworthiness – Logs and customer support
In this Hola VPN review, I learnt that it clearly admits to logging your data. It keeps your logging history and the web pages you visit.
“We Log data and this may include the following information- browser type, web pages you visit, time spent on those pages, access times and dates”
Not only that, Hola VPN shares your personal information with third-parties. Here is what they say about that:
“We may disclose Personal Information to other trusted third party service providers or partners for the purposes of providing you with the Services, storage and analytics.”
So, that’s it. There is nothing further to discuss. Hola VPN security is not safe anymore.
The customer support has a poor customer support. There is no live chat option on the website and you can only contact them through email.
There is, however, a very comprehensive FAQs section on their website.
On this section, you will find some useful information related to the service. Most impressively, it contains guides and manual to help you configure the service on your device.
Compatibility – Apps and supported devices
The service has custom apps for Windows, Android, Mac, iOS, and Smart TVs. It also has extension from Chrome and Firefox browser.
There is no Hola client for Linux. However, you can use it on your system with the secure browser extensions.

Hola free VPN Review – FAQs
Hola VPN has problematic procedures and been involved in some infamous privacy-related scandals. This begs the question: Is Hola safe?
We believe Hola VPN offers some nifty features to the users. It comes free which makes it more accessible for everyone. The providers of Hola may have good intentions but still, this service is far from safe.
Hola uses a P2P network that masks your online profile. However, another individual also simultaneously uses the IP address provided to you. This should raise few eyebrows.
Let us say, if the person sharing your IP address uses it for a criminal activity. This activity could be traced back to you and you could end in hot waters.
Do I Recommend Hola VPN?
No, absolutely not. I do not recommend Hola VPN.
There are a lot of reasons why I don’t recommend Hola. It clearly admits on keeping your logs and that includes your browsing history.
If your online traffic is not hidden, there’s no point of using a VPN such as Hola. It has a weak encryption and brings you with the slowest speed possible.
It uses users’ device for peer-to-peer proxy that keeps your device unsafe and vulnerable to hacking.
There’s no such feature admirable. I would never recommend users to get Hola VPN.
