BTGuard is an anonymizing tool for all torrent freaks out there. No matter what you do, there’s always a risk of identity disclosure at the time of downloading torrents and use your top torrent sites. In addition, what you’re downloading is also subjected to surveillance. Hence, you need a secure tool to hide all your online activities.

With its versatile package plans, BTGuard is a considerable option for those who seek security and for those who wish to bypass geo-restrictions.

But is it one of the best VPN provider?

This is something that we will discuss in details.

BTGuard offers two main services to fulfill the demands of two aforementioned internet user categories: VPN and BitTorrent Proxy.

In this BTGuard review of 2019, I will put the price and service of this VPN against each other and tell you if it’s worth the money.

Look out for any other VPN in the industry in our popular VPN reviews.

Let’s dig in.

  • OpenVPN with Military grade Encryption
  • Supports Torrenting
  • Works on Multiple Platforms
  • Based in a Five Eye Country
  • Slow Speed
  • Limited number of Servers

BTGuard Review – Protocols & Encryption

Protocols and encryption are important factors to look for before purchasing a VPN. A VPN protects your valuable data and makes your security invulnerable through these features.

BTGuard’s VPN supports PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) and OpenVPN protocols.

PPTP is an obsolete tool that has proven to be vulnerable time and time again.

In contrast, OpenVPN is best option in the market. It is advance, secure and constantly improving. However, it does have some performance issues on iOS.

Meanwhile, BTGuard offers 256-bit AES, which is an acquired taste among the international intelligence agencies.

This tells you how good this encryption actually is.

Logging & Privacy Policy

On the bottom of BTGuard’s website, a familiar claim appears.

Since this isn’t my first rodeo, I went digging into their privacy policy to see if they are really true to this claim.

Here is how BTGuard’s privacy policy reads.

There are several interesting here.

BTGuard claims that it does not share our personal information with third parties. Good. However, they never make it clear what personal information they are holding.

Suffice to say, this is troubling.

We don’t know if BTGuard saves the our name, email or address. So, is BTGuard safe when it comes to privacy policy? Well, not exactly.

Is Torrenting Allowed?

It’s all in the name.

The primary function of BT Guard is to provide secure torrenting.

But what’s wrong with regular torrenting and why do we need a VPN to ‘secure’ it?

Glad you asked.

While torrenting is an extremely convenient method of downloading heavy files, it leaves you exposed to plenty of threats.

Every peer you share content with in torrenting can see your IP address. Of course, among these peers are people who do not have very good intentions.

And you know what happens next.

Hence, it’s better to download torrents with a VPN masking your IP address.

BTGuard torrent service should definitely be appealing to the netizens. After all, it was designed for this purpose.

Netflix: Does it unblock the Streaming Service?

VPNs and Netflix have had somewhat of a bad break up. Now, Netflix has imposed powerful firewalls to keep VPN services away.

But it wasn’t always like that.

There was a time any VPN could unlock the geographically restricted content on Netflix. Now, only a handful of VPNs can do that.

Sadly, BTGuard is not in this elite group.

As soon you try to open Netflix with this VPN, it detects your IP and blocks you from site.

What about other streaming services?

It looks like BTGuard does not unblock other video streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer and Hulu.

Moreover, you cannot unblock your desired geo-limited content on Kodi that helps users watch their preferred stuff without spending a single penny.

Therefore, you will need to use a best VPN for Kodi box to achieve your mission successfully.

Jurisdiction: Canada

What’s worse than a country spying on its own citizens? It sharing the said information with a group of other countries.

This is exactly how the Five Eyes roll.

Like a bunch of surveillance junkies, they take a puff of your private information and then pass it on. BTGuard is based in Canada, which puts it right in the grasp on Five Eyes and their vile surveillance procedure.

Speed Test

The world has turned into a global village and in this village, time matters. Everyone wants things to happen fast. And this attitude does not change when it comes to VPN service.

Although online privacy demands a price, rarely anyone is willing to pay in the currency of time. That’s why I conducted the following speed test in this BTGuard VPN review.

Without BTGuard:

With BTGuard:

With a big drop in speed, BtGuard will test the patience of torrent freaks.

Server Network

BTGuard has a geographically dispersed server network. There are 3 main locations that serve as BTGuard’s network points: Canada, Netherlands and Singapore.

As per their claim, BTGuard’s has multiple 10GB lines for optimum capacity. This also allows them keep no limitation on the connection speed.

But something is amiss here.

Three servers mean they will crowd up quickly. And this will suffocate the bandwidth speed. The speed test of this BTGuard review is a witness to the above statement.

Customer Support

Sadly, BTGuard doesn’t provide live customer or tech-support. However, it welcomes all queries and concerns via tickets.

There are two main departments that you should address in case you face an issue with the service or wish to inquire about a random concern: sales department and support department.

Sales department will answer all your queries regarding BTGuard’s services and package plans. In order to contact their sales team, all you need to do is visit their official website, enter your email and jot down the question you wish to ask.

To check the promptness of their response, I contacted their sales team and submitted a random query.

On the other hand, BTGuard’s support team is always there to resolve your concerns pertaining to their services. In order to contact BTGuard’s support team, you need to be a user of BTGuard’s BitTorrent Proxy or VPN.

To contact their support personnel, you need to enter your BTGuard login credentials before inquiring the provider.

Other than alll this, BTGuard has a solid knowledgebase that answers lots of important questions.

Cross-Platform Compatibility

Device compatibility is one of the important factors to look for before buying a VPN or any other tool you may use to ensure your privacy and security. In order to cope with our on-the-go routine, we often need to carry our devices along with us.

Such device mobility requires a VPN to be compatible with different devices.

Readers of this BTGuard review will be disappointed to know that this VPN does not have dedicated apps.

However, it supports Windows, Mac, Android and iOS.

Hands on Testing on Windows

Since, this service does not have a dedicated client of its own; you will have rely on the BtGuard Setup for OpenVPN.

First, install the OpenVPN software and the config files.

When you will click on the config file, it will automatically extract and are copied into OpenVPN configuration file.

This is as simple as it gets.

Now, all you need to do is click the OpenVPN app and you connect with any of BTGuard’s servers.

Overall, my experience with using BTGuard was exceptional.

From the BtGuard download process to connecting the VPN, everything happened with a breeze.

BTGuard for Mac

Mac is an OS that generates much debate. Some users consider it as a less capable version of Windows while its devotees argue otherwise.

In any case, hackers do not discriminate between platforms.

And this is why Mac users should make use of BTGuard for especially for torrenting. They can do this via the BTGuard Mac OpenVPN set up.

Android users are billions in number. This puts a target on the back of this widely used OS. BTGuard supports Android through OpenVPN and PPTP third party tools.

BTGuard Price and Plans

BTGuard has 2 separate pricing plans. One is for proxy while other is for VPN.

BitTorrent Proxy

For all torrent freaks out there, BTGuard offers Proxy BtGuard service. Through this package plan, users will not only be able to evade geo-restrictions; but, they will also be able to upload and download files anonymously.

The price charged for BitTorrent Proxy is $6.95/month. Disguising your real identity and bypassing geo-restrictions isn’t the only set of benefit you get by using BTGuard’s BitTorrent Proxy. With this package plan, you can cope with throttling issues from your ISPs as well.

Lately, there have been many concerns about ISPs throttling bandwidth. You can cope with all of them easily with BTGuard’s BitTorrent Proxy. Therefore, it can be said that BitTorrent Proxy is a cost-effective option for those who love to share but want to keep their identity concealed.

For those who are concerned about their security, BTGuard offers a VPN to safeguard their privacy. This package plan is offered to users whose preferences aren’t confined to evading geo-restrictions only.

The price charged for BTGuard VPN is $9.15/month. With BTGuard’s VPN, you can keep your online activities discreet and protect your valuable data through sophisticated levels of encryption.

BTGuard offers 256-bit encryption. This means that even if a hacker successfully infiltrates your network security and tries to access your data, he will get nothing but encrypted information.

Through geographically scattered servers of BTGuard, you can cope with censorship issues in your country and bypass geo-restrictions imposed by other regions around the globe. With BTGuard VPN, you can access content from Europe, Asia and Canada with ease without worrying about any limitation at all.

Payment Methods

Diversity in payment methods is necessary as it influences customers’ buying behavior. Everyone likes to pay for the purchased services as per his/her convenience. Hence, a service provider, especially in VPN industry with intense competition, must offer different payment methods to choose from.

BTGuard offers diversity in payment methods by supporting transactions via PayPal and Credit/Debit Cards.

In addition, BTGuard accepts transactions through Bitcoin. This shows that BTGuard isn’t only concerned about its profits, but cares for the privacy of its customers as well.

Refund Policy

This will not sit well with many reading this BTGuard review. The VPN does not offer any refund whatsoever. Disappointing to say the least.

However, there is a BtGuard free trial on offer.

BTGuard TrustPilot Review

Trustpilot is not very kind to this VPN. This BTGuard review identified several issues with the service.

Another unflattering review of BTGuard on TrustPilot.

BTGuard Twitter Review

Many netizens on twitter praise BTGuard for offering an anonymous payment option. Using a Bitcoin option means that your identity stays hidden to the provider.

But evidently, the higher rates makes many privacy seekers search for a cheaper option.

BTGuard Reddit Review

Redditors have never hold back their views regarding different VPN providers.

However, some reddit users are on the edge about this service.

Considering switching from BTGuard to NordVPN from nordvpn

Similarly, this users share an unpleasant experience with service.

Alternatives of BTGuard

You can use other VPNs if you dont wish to secure your privacy through BTGuard. Before using such services, you had better read these reviews:

Final Verdict

Overall, I did not find BtGuard impressive.

It seems that there was a time thousands of torrent lover used this VPN to download torrent securely. However, those days are well over.

With that, it seems that the provider is not interesting in bringing any improvement to this VPN.

It is stuck on the same number of servers from the past 3 years. There are no dedicated apps in development either.

Hence, I conclude this BTGuard review by recommending the Netizens to steer clear of this service.

Subscription for one month and paid by Paypall
In Asia could not get conncetion.
    No help only faqs
Immediate made claim and Paypall made refund.
However BTQuard took money for the next month.
    BTQuard is a SCAM…

  2. Disappointed says:

Been a BT Guard subscriber for more than 2 years but am totally disgusted by their non-existent support. I will never go back. Much better packages available anyway.

  3. JohnDoe#13 says:

Being someone that has been sued by Hollywood for alleged copyright infringment, I do appreciate how BTGuard has been on top of the issues that arise in the encryption packages (SSL/DNS/etc.) and has a policy that they have too much traffic to log it. Unlike IPVanish which will cancel you without notice if they don’t like what or where you go on the web for any reason, etc., etc., etc. Having no logs provides another level of security and privacy for it’s users. I have consistently gotten a 10MB speed using them. My only real complaint is that there is no way using their service on other platforms (Linux, Router, Mac) to FORCE all traffic through the tunnel and to demand that if there is no VPN to not send any traffic through the public IP.

  4. kyle says:

had a sub for the past year or two and has worked fine, but now i try it on my computer and it wont work for no reason, ipad connection works fine, no support, and super expensive comparatively. good fuckin bye btguard

  5. ex-BTguard user says:

BTguard aren’t accepting Bitcoin payments for at least the past two days. Their customer support is non existent too. 🙁

  6. Alex Y. says:

The speed is extremely slow there:
    – 5mbps over BTGuard
    – 25-50mbps over PIA’s Canadian servers (I am from California).

Such a slow speed makes BTGuard practically unusable, also, their price is 2x higher than for PIA. So my 1Y BTGuard subscription was definitely a mistake, and btw, they denied to provide a partial for it (even pro-rated w/ monthly payment plan).
