Columbia, MO – January 23, 2025-MU Health Care settles an $8M lawsuit after a 2022 data breach exposed 44,000+ patients’ sensitive information. Compensation and security improvements are underway.

The University of Missouri (MU) Health Care has agreed to an $8 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit stemming from a data breach that compromised the personal and medical information of over 44,000 patients. The breach, which occurred in 2022, exposed sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, medical records, and contact details.

The lawsuit accused MU Health Care of failing to implement adequate cybersecurity measures, allowing unauthorized access to its systems. Victims claimed that this negligence left them vulnerable to identity theft and financial fraud. A cybersecurity analyst said:

As part of the settlement, affected individuals are eligible for compensation to cover damages, including identity theft protection, credit monitoring services, and reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses related to the breach. Those impacted may also claim up to $5,000 if they can prove significant financial losses.

MU Health Care has not admitted wrongdoing but has pledged to strengthen its cybersecurity protocols. A spokesperson for MU Health Care stated:

Legal experts view this settlement as a warning to other healthcare providers about the financial and reputational risks of inadequate data security. With healthcare breaches on the rise, hospitals and clinics must adopt robust cybersecurity frameworks to safeguard patient data.
