Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Origin

Running a background check for your potential VPN provider is definitely necessary. Luckily, both providers have been leading the industry for a considerable amount of time to offer unmatched VPN service.

Tunnelbear is a Canadian based VPN provider operating out of Toronto, which was established back in 2011. On the other hand, Cyberghost is a Romanian company, which was also coincidently established in the same year.

Cyberghost has an advantage over Tunnelbear since it is operational out of Romania and we know that its data retention laws are very lenient because the Romanian government no longer follows the strict regulations of the European court of justice (EJC).

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Pricing plans

Cyberghost is the more affordable option if you are considering TunnelBear or CyberGhost, as it will cost you less in the long run, considering most VPN; users tend to buy at least a yearlong subscription plan. Cyberghost offers four amazing subscription plans, which are adequately priced to cater every segment. To top it off, Cyberghost also offer a full 30-day money back guarantee.

Whereas Tunnelbear has two subscription plans, which are monthly and yearly based. They also offer a free version, which provides 500mb data every month; however, I feel that this package is more of a gimmick then a selling point since who would be satisfied by only 500mbs. Another downside to Tunnelbear is that they do not offer any sort of refund.

Too bad if you don’t like their service because you won’t get your money back.

  • Free 500mb/mo.
  • Offers a Giant plan at the cost of $9.99/mo.
  • Grizzly plan is available @$5.00/mo (Pay $59.99 for 12/months instead of $119.88)
  • Does not have 2 year plan
  • Does not offer 3 year plan

  • Does not offer freemium version
  • 1 year plan at $4.99/mo.
  • 1 month, $11.99/mo.
  • 2 years, $3.79/mo.
  • 3 years, $2.75/mo. *Best value 77% saving*

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Payment options

Both providers support modern payment methods like credit cards and bitcoin therefore you should not have any trouble with payments. However, Cyberghost additionally accepts PayPal payment, which I think, is a very convenient option and Tunnelbear should incorporate it too.

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Servers

The servers of a VPN is one of the most critical factors for making a decision to choose one out of the various VPN alternatives available. So, using server network as a criterion, what’s the better paid VPN TunnelBear vs CyberGhost?

Cyberghost, towers Tunnelbear when it comes to servers, offering a staggering 2766 servers worldwide. This makes Cyberghost great since you can select multiple servers on different devices that you might own. On the other hand, Tunnelbear has not mentioned their exact servers on the website; however, they do mention their 20+ server locations. After a bit of digging around I found that they have around 354+ Servers, which is not that impressive.

Privacy and security

Both Tunnelbear and Cyberghost are on par with top standards of privacy and security and it would be difficult to deem one contender winner. Tunnelbear and Cyberghost both support strong AES 256 bit encryption, DNS and IP leak protection and zero logs.

However, the zero log policy of Tunnelbear is very ambiguous and deceiving in my opinion. Even though they claim zero logs, when you actually read the fine print there is a lot being logged than you might think. The screen shots below explain what I mean…

Compatibility

Both Tunnelbear and Cyberghost are compatible with major operating systems like Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android. Besides this, both of them have extensions for popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox, therefore both are tie compatibility wise.

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Usability

CyberGhost has a really intuitive and simple user interface. It does not require any effort to learn how to use CyberGhost. You can easily tinker around with settings if you are tech-minded with CyberGhost.

TunnelBear is a pretty usable VPN service as well. It has a simple yet appealing interface, with a fierce yet cute looking bear diggings its way around the map displayed on the user interface. So, as far as ease of use is concerned, TunnelBear and CyberGhost are equals.

Winner: There is no clear winner.

Free Trial

In the CyberGhost free vs TunnelBear contest, it is difficult to pick a winner. Since both of these VPN, providers are competitors they always offer something that would offer the wow factor. However in our findings both Tunnelbear and Cyberghost offer free trial versions therefore, you can check both out for your selves.

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Money back guarantee

As we discussed earlier Cyberghost offers a complete refund even after thirty days of use, whereas Tunnelbear does not offer any refunds and you are basically stuck with it whether you like it or not.

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Customer support

This is another segment where Tunnelbear is seriously lacking, I mean it is 2018 for god sake and they are still relying on email ticketing. Cyberghost in comparison offers live chat support so you can get instant support for any query you might have.

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

P2P support

Torrenting is probably the number one reason why people even use VPNs, if you cannot use VPN for torrenting then it renders the purpose of it useless. Cyber ghost has thousands of servers and offers dedicated torrenting servers, whereas Tunnelbear does not support P2P activities, which is kind of a huge disappointment.

Winner: CyberGhost is a winner.

Operating System Compatibility

Winner: CyberGhost is a clear winner.

Reliability and performance

In our comparison of CyberGhost vs TunnelBear, we found both clients quite similar with regards to overall performance and reliability, even though Tunnelbear look and feels fantastic, the overall performance was a bit sluggish when compared to Cyberghost.

You wanna feel like a online ninja?

There are two ways of been private and anonymous on the internet:-
1. Go offline burn your computer hardrives and router and never connect to the internet again.
2. Buy Cyberghost VPN
Personally I picked option 2 as lets face it who can afford a flame thrower these days? oh and also it makes you feel like a ninja online. It enables you to be able to hop into any site and no one would know you were there.
Also are you sick of been blocked from sites by your isp?… You are? then what are you doing still here reading this for? GO GET CYBERGHOST VPN NOW!!!!!!

I recommend them!

So far, I can use sources that I couldn’t before. Haven’t had any trouble with CyberGhost. Had to have a little help from customer service on the setup, but it was rather quick and painless. Had a lot of trouble with setting up with a competitor, ended up cancelling them. So far its doing a good job!

Speeds have taken a nose dive

Speeds have taken a nose dive. Disconnected constantly, all servers are slow. Sold out to McAfee, a USA company, no longer based in Canada? Subscriber for 11 months, Will not continue subscription.
My speed with tunnelbear off;
DOWNLOAD
83.96Mbps
My speed with tunnelbear on;
DOWNLOAD
11.27Mbps
This not an aberration, it is very typical of their speeds this year, perhaps after McAfee took over?
Very poor customer service, it seems the links to CS have disappeared.

No 30-days money back guarantee.

No 30-days money back guarantee.
Also, the amount of locations to choose is really too less.
Apart from that, it doesn’t work to watch videos abroad. Only sometimes it does, but “sometimes” is not reliable enough for me.
It’s a pity that I bought the 1-year subscription since it’s pretty much a waste of money.
I used HideMyAss before and that one seemed better. (Also a bit more expensive, but at least that price matches the service compared to TunnelBear ones)
Also on the cancellation email there is a button to give your feedback, but when you click on it, you land on the helpdesk where you can ask for questions/help, but you cannot give your actual feedback.
All in all, I’m not convinced and wouldn’t recommend it.
(Rating might be modified if TunnelBear comes with a compensation)

What next if you don’t like TunnelBear vs Cyberghost review?

As I mentioned earlier, you can still avail other VPN services for any reason. Here is the list of VPN services other than TunnelBear and Cyberghost:

    1. TunnelBear vs NordVPN
    2. TunnelBear vs PIA

Final verdict

We have put Tunnelbear vs Cyberghost head to head to find out which one offers the best features at the most desirable price point. Through our detailed comparison it is quite evident that Cyberghost wins this comparison by a long shot, offering great feature, support and reliability at a minuscule price difference.

Although Tunnelbear did give a good fight, however there are still much to be desired from this provider. For one I would like to see a live chat option, which would make the overall experience so much better. Furthermore, an inclusion of P2P support and perhaps a bit more servers would make Tunnelbear on par with some other leading providers in the industry.
