Surfshark for Netflix – A Winning Combination?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Surfshark is a new VPN service making news in the market. The VPN industry’s growth is paving the way for new entrants, spurred by concerns over increasing upper-handedness of government authorities with surveillance programs all over the world.

VPNs offer some of that elusive privacy and security we netizens are pining for.

But you might be wondering, what’s the need for covering yet another VPN and its capabilities when we already have hundreds?

There’s two reasons for that:

  • I can’t help it
  • The quality of a product seldom stays the same throughout its lifetime

Thus, many VPNs that used to work with Netflix, don’t anymore. Here, I am going to test Surfshark VPN for Netflix and evaluate its performance when it comes to streaming shows online.

Ready?

Oh, and check out our Surfshark review for a detailed inspection of all aspects of this service.

Does Surfshark VPN work with Netflix?

The perennial question for any regular streamer is if the concerned VPN works with Netflix.

Surfshark has no trouble unblocking Netflix. This in itself is a feat because many VPN services have lost their ability to unblock Netflix (Private Internet Access is one).

Netflix has imposed a VPN ban on a number of VPN services that were unable to hide the fact that users were actually using a VPN to access Netflix. Since Netflix is legally obliged to follow licensing agreements in each region it is available in, it has started a crackdown on VPNs by blocking these upon detection.

Surfshark-for-Netflix

Surfshark is using pretty secure mechanisms for getting past Netflix, which is one of the reasons why the streaming service has been unable to detect and ban this VPN.

The freshness of the VPN is another possible factor why it is able to unblock Netflix. It has probably not yet entered the radar of Netflix and raised its suspicion enough to warrant a ban yet.

Nonetheless, if the provider continues to update its security and obfuscation technology, it is likely to keep unblocking Netflix in the foreseeable future.

Surfshark Netflix Speed Test Results

When evaluating a VPN service for it capability to allow smooth streams, there are two main factors that need to be borne in mind:

  • Ability to unblock Netflix
  • Server speeds

For testing Surshark VPN Netflix speed, I used Fast.com which is an Internet speed testing tool developed by Netflix.

I connected to the US server for the speed test, since it is the US Netflix that most people want to access no matter where they are located in the world.

Then, running the test, I got this:

surfshark-netflix-speed

The speed test shown above was done on a 30 Mbps Internet connection. So, the speed dropped around 32%.

Now, 32% is not a negligible drop. However, it is still pretty good considering most other providers suffer even more drastic drops in speed.

In fact, since my base speed was 30 Mbps, I could still stream content perfectly well at 19.6 Mbps.

Though it could be a problem if your Internet connection is already too slow. A 32% drop might then prevent you from streaming.

So, Surshark Netflix is a working solution except for the cases of users with slow Internet speeds (less than 5 Mbps).

How to Setup Surfshark for Netflix

Step 1: Sign up for Surfshark

Step 2: Download and Install the Surfshark app on your device/computer

Step 3: Login to the app and choose a US server

Step 4: Visit Netflix and start streaming!

Netflix Regions you can Access via Surfshark

Surfshark currently has around 500 servers in about 45 countries in the world. With Surfshark you can easily access US Netflix.

However, this VPN is not only good accessing American Netflix. You can also get other Netflix regions with Surfshark:

Although American Netflix has the largest library of TV shows and movies out of all regions, some users might prefer their regional version of Netflix. For these users, it can be a problem when they travel abroad and find themselves unable to access Netflix as they did back home.

If you are one of those users, then you can take advantage of the different server locations offered by Surfshark and connect to those.

Why Use Surfshark for Netflix

If you’re thinking about using Surfshark Netflix, there is more than one reason why you really should:

Unlimited multi-logins

Surfshark allows users to connect as many devices as they want to same VPN. This means that you can buy a single VPN subscription and have your entire family use it on their smartphones and PCs for Netflix treaming. There are hardly any VPNs in the market that offer unlimited simultaneous connections.

30-day Refund Policy

Surfshark allows users to request a refund within 30-days of their purchase if they are not satisfied with its working on Netflix. So, you don’t have to worry about your money being wasted if you find this VPN not to your liking.

Not only does Surfshark offer unlimited multi-logins, but it does so without imposing any bandwidth limits no matter how many devices you have connected to this VPN. This provider surely is quite generous and this shows the commitment of the company towards ensuring user satisfaction.

Surfshark Netflix Errors and Quick Fixes

Unable to Access certain Websites

If you are unable to access some websites or streaming services through Surfshark, try flushing your DNS through the Command Prompt

  • Press the Windows key and type “cmd” in the search
  • Right click on Command Prompt and click run as Administrator
  • In the cmd, type ipconfig/flushdns, then press Enter key

This will clear your DNS cache, which often resolves this problem. Furthermore, by following few simple steps you can get rid of Netflix proxy error.

Change server location

Choose a different server location if you are unable to access Netflix or any other site and then try again. Make sure you log out of Netflix or the website you want to access before changing the servers on Surfshark, and then log back in.

Change VPN protocol

  • Open “Advanced Settings” tab from Surfshark menu
  • Select a different protocol such IKEv2 or PPTP
  • Log out of Netflix or website you want to visit and close your browser/app
  • Restart browser or app and visit desired website

Use Wired Connection

Wireless connections tend to perform slower especially when you are connected to a VPN. Wired connection, on the other hand, provide lower latency and higher download speeds. So, try accessing the website you want to open through a wired connection with Surfshark running on it.

Restart router

The good ol’ magic trick works more often than we give it credit for. If your router has been running continuously for a while, try restarting it to clear its cache. This simple trick can improve your speeds and allow you to open apps and website you couldn’t get past earlier.

FAQs

Yes, as the speed test result above shows, Surfshark will reduce your streaming speed. However, Netflix has amazing servers that can support HD quality content on Internet speeds as low as 5 Mbps.

So the speed drop you get with Surfshark won’t be so drastic so as to keep you from enjoying Netflix.

Yes, you can, but only if you use a VPN service like Surfshark VPN for Netflix which has servers located in the US.

Final Thoughts

Surfshark VPN Netflix is easily one of the best working solutions you can find in the market if you are tired of the discrimination us poor streaming fanatics have to deal with regarding title availability. With its outstanding discounts and 30-day money-back guarantee, Surfshark is definitely deserves a chance if you’re a Netflix fan outside of the US.

Hmm… I did try and in the end switched to Surfshark after reading the review you’ve done on them. Though my speed is way better because I connect to the server here in Germany and it gives access to Netflix US so HD content is no issue. However, I have no clue how that works, but as far as I know (thanks to Reddit) some other providers have it set up that way too.
