Snowden Uses VPNs to Stay Safe Online

Reading Time: 4 minutes

In 2012, Snowden pulled down NSA’s pants with his expose and then made a run for it. Ever since then, we all know that Uncle Sam has been desperate to get hold of Snowden. How is Snowden staying on the grid while staying hidden at the same time?
Snowden is sitting in Russia, and frequently gives online interviews (either chat or video). The US is the country that is known for tracking down nuclear weapons, and yet it remains unable to identify where Snowden is sitting. Snowden is not using any high-tech firewalls or the like to keep himself cloaked. He is using an online safety solution that normal people like us use all the time: VPN and proxies!

Lessons in Online Privacy the World Should Draw from Snowden

Snowden’s successful coverage thanks to VPNs and proxies is a salute to the technology. The scenario seriously undermines our attempts to upgrade firewalls and create complicated networking architecture to keep our online presence safe. Uncle Sam’s latest ‘security threat’ is only a breath away from being called a ‘terrorist’ and his successful use of VPNs and proxies in the face of these circumstances is a lesson for the international internet using community.

There is a lot that still remains to be resolved about Snowden’s actions and intentions, but there are a few lessons are undeniable. Our data is in excess and waiting for anybody with the right technology to capture it. Once our data has been captured, the possibilities of manipulation are only limited by the restriction of the human mind.

You can trust nobody when you are online. Your online identity helps form a profile of your personality. Every preference, Like, Check-In, Promote, upvote, downvote and Share is an indication of who you are. With enough data, it will not be impossible to develop methods through which you can be manipulated (or eliminated if deemed necessary). Technically, your online profile grows more comprehensive every time you perform an activity online.

If Snowden is right, then those who promised to protect us cannot be trusted anymore. The point is that if they can collect our data without our consent then they are now just one stage away from experimenting on us without our consent. Essentially, if somebody can access and record our data, then they may also alter it – thereby altering our very lives.

How are we at risk? Draw your attention to logician Noam Chomsky’s ‘Manufacturing Consent’ in which the multiple prize winning author insisted that our reliance on the media has made us a slave to it. That was in 1992 – this is 2014 and our reliance on the internet has surpassed that which we ever had on the media in the past. If we were slaves in the past, then we are puppets now.

Can’t Live With it, Can’t Live Without it

The irony of it all is that when we need the internet to stay alive in society. While we cannot live without it and we will not survive for long if we continue to live with it without protecting ourselves. Snowden took the first step and encouraged us to stand up for our online right to privacy. He is now cornered and there is little he can do after having taken the brunt of the reaction from the US and its allies. We need to reciprocate his dedication towards online privacy and take the next step.

Conclusion: Take a Stand – Use a VPN

Make a resolution! Stop tweaking your privacy settings because they won’t stop the NSA! Use VPNs and encrypt your data like Snowden does! Once a VPN switches your external IP, not even the big shots at the NSA will be able to find you. Edward Snowden’s continued invisibility has proven the utility of VPN technology.

I have a dream that one day everybody will be using a VPN and organizations like the NSA will begin to serve the people instead of spying on them! I have a dream that one day the war for online safety will come to an end and will not jeopardize the need for online privacy in the process! I have a dream that the internet will belong to the people and VPNs will become a basic part of the internet! I have a dream and I invite you to join me in the pursuit of making it a reality! Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr
