Roku has reached the landmark of having over 29.1 million active users this year, making it one of the most popular streaming boxes available in the market. There are literally hundreds of popular channels hosting millions of movies and TV shows that you can watch on your TV via live streaming using Roku.

However, geo-restrictions on channels and streaming content limit the full potential of Roku device. This becomes especially problematic if you are located outside of the US because that will bar you from accessing channels such as Amazon, Hulu, PBS, HBO Now and many more.

The unblocking capabilities of NordVPN will be critical if you want to watch all these Roku channels from any region.

So in this article, I’m going to guide you through the process for how to setup NordVPN on Roku.

Go through our NordVPN review to find out why its a highly rated VPN.

Installing NordVPN on Roku

NordVPN is one of the most reputable VPN service providers having a huge network of servers capable of unblocking censored or geo-restricted websites.

Although you cannot directly install NordVPN on Roku, there are ways to connect Roku to a NordVPN-enabled internet connection. In fact, this is a problem with all VPNs because Roku does not have built-in support for VPN services.

The easiest way you can give a NordVPN connection to your Roku device is by creating a virtual router using your PC which already has the VPN enabled on it.

So, there are three things you need to complete this process:

  • A Windows 10 PC
  • A Roku device
  • Internet connection
  • NordVPN

Follow the steps below to share a NordVPN connection from your computer to Roku:

First you need to install NordVPN on your computer.

Step 1: Visit the official NordVPN website

Step 2: Subscribe to a NordVPN subscription that suits your needs

Step 3: Download and install the NordVPN windows app

Step 4:  Click on the Internet connection icon in the taskbar then click on Network & Internet Settings

Step 5: On the left menu, click on Mobile hotspot and toggle on the Share my Internet connection with other devices button

Setup-1

Step 6: Now click on status on the left-hand menu and click on Change adapter options

Setup-2

Step 7: Right-click on the NordVPN Tap Adapter > Properties

Setup-3

Step 8: Click on Sharing tab and check the box next to “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection”

Step 9: In the drop down menu select the hotspot that you earlier created and click Ok

Step 10: Now launch NordVPN and connect to a US server

If your Roku isn’t already setup for US region, make sure to perform the steps below to unlock US content. Otherwise jump to step 16.

Step 11: With your VPN connected to a US server, go to https://owner.roku.com on your PC or mobile

Step 12: Set your country to United States

Step 13: Enter a US ZIP code consisting of 5 digits (92803, 10007 etc.)

Step 14: Hold the Reset button on the back of your Roku device for 15 seconds to Factory reset

Step 15: Log in with your new US region account when the device starts up again

Step 16: On your Roku’s menu, select Settings > Network

Roku-Settings

Step 17: Then select Set up Connection > Wireless

Roku-Settings-2

Step 18: You should see a list of all Wi-Fi networks in the range of your Roku. Select the one associated with your NordVPN virtual router

Roku-Settings-3

Step 19: You will be asked to enter your Wi-Fi Password

Congratulations. Your Roku should now be connected to your PC’s VPN-enabled router.

Connecting Roku to NordVPN via Physical Router

You can also give a NordVPN connection to Roku if you directly configure the VPN on a compatible physical router.

This process is trickier than the virtual router method, but it if you find your internet speed is being affected by sharing NordVPN via your PC, then this method can help improve your speed since you will be directly connecting to a router rather than through the PC.

How NordVPN Helps to Access Restricted Content on Roku

Content access restrictions are imposed by permitting only the IP addresses originating from a certain country to gain access.

If you could somehow fool the system from thinking that your web traffic is originating from a country that you aren’t actually physically located in, you would be able to access all the websites, services, and apps that are normally geo-restricted in your region.

Using a VPN like NordVPN, you can connect to servers in the US no matter where your physical location is. This effectively changes your IP address, giving it a US identity and thus granting you the ability to access all US-only geo-restricted streaming services from abroad.

All you need to know is how to install NordVPN on Roku and you are good to go!

Best Free Streaming Apps for Roku

Roku consists of a huge variety of streaming apps, both free and paid, for your viewing pleasure. Here are a few that are definitely worth checking out:

  1. The Roku Channel Store (for movies and TV shows)
  2. Pluto (for sports, entertainment, news, movies, TV etc.)
  3. Tubi (for TV series and movies)
  4. STIRR (for sports)
  5. XUMO (for movies, news, stand-up comedy, and much more)

Wrapping Up

It is unfortunate that Roku doesn’t offer direct support for VPN apps. But this is only a minor problem because NordVPN can be installed on Roku by simply using your PC as a VPN hotspot or setting up the VPN directly on the router that your Roku can connect to.

Whichever method you use, one this is clear: you will no longer be hindered by annoying geo-restrictions anymore and watch any movie or TV show from anywhere in the world.
