Does Surfshark work with Hulu?

Surfshark offers 1700+ servers all over the world and powerful unblocking features, but can it unblock Hulu outside of the U.S? Find out if it has what it takes to unblock Hulu in our in-depth guide.

Does Surfshark work with Hulu

Surfshark is one of the most budget-friendly VPN in the entire industry. Despite being affordable, it still offers 1700+ servers all over the world and unlimited simultaneous connections.

On its website, it claims two things regarding its ability to unblock Hulu from anywhere in the world:

  • Stream fast, in 4K, and lag-free
  • Bypass Hulu VPN blocks

So naturally, what I wanted to find out for today’s blog was — are their claims true? Does Surfshark work with Hulu?

After extensive testing, I can confirm that Surfshark can actually unblock Hulu, however, not with all US servers. I’ll show you the steps too if you want to unblock Hulu with Surfshark yourself.

To make it easier for you to watch Hulu from anywhere in the world, I also went ahead and researched the best servers to use and come up with a list of quick fixes to bypass the dreaded Hulu proxy error.

Make sure to stick around till the end and also consider sharing it if you find this guide useful.

How to watch Hulu with Surfshark?

Watching Hulu with Surfshark is easy, however, you just have to pick the right server. Normally, if you visit Hulu outside the US, you’ll come across an error message like this one:

“You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool. You’ll need to disable it to access Hulu. If you think you’re receiving this message in error, please contact our customer support…”

But if you connect to a US server that works with Hulu, you can trick the system and easily watch any content available on Hulu without any restrictions.

Here’s how you can use Surfshark to watch Hulu from anywhere in the world in just four steps:

Step 1: Launch your Surfshark app and login with your user name and password.

Step 2: Connect to a US server (United States – Detroit & United States – Latham).

Step 3: Open the incognito window on your browser and visit Hulu.com.

Step 4: Select any show you’d like to watch and it will start streaming straight away.

Unlike ExpressVPN which I also tested with Hulu, Surfshark didn’t unblock Hulu in the first try. I had to change a couple of servers before I decided to contact live chat support. But after a quick chat and again switching to a different server, I was finally able to unblock Hulu.

Once I got connected successfully, I was more than satisfied with Surfshark’s streaming performance. That said, ExpressVPN’s performance was better.

As I said earlier, not all US servers of Surfshark managed to unblock Hulu. I found that I bit weird during my testing. However, as per the live chat support representative, “United States – Detroit” and “United States – Latham” are optimized to work with Hulu.

Once I switched to the recommended servers, I was quickly able to access Hulu without encountering any annoying issues. Here are the speed test results I got with the two recommended server locations:

  • Ping: 245 ms
  • Download speed: 80.19 Mbps
  • Upload speed: 47.11 Mbps

  • Ping: 275 ms
  • Download speed: 83.6 Mbps
  • Upload speed: 67.77 Mbps

If you’re curious about Surfshark’s speed performance over nine different servers, I’ve covered a full in-depth speed test of Surfshark in a separate blog. Maybe you’d like to check that out as well.

Video Quality

If we talk about video quality, I was able to stream Hulu in 4K Ultra HD quality during my testing. But do keep in mind that Hulu’s video playback quality greatly depends on your own internet connection speed.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, these are some of the shows I managed to play on Hulu in high definition quality without facing any buffing issues:

  • Pen15
  • Castle Rock
  • The Great
  • Normal People
  • Shrill

Surfshark Hulu Proxy Error? Try These Fixes

If Hulu detects you’re using a VPN or proxy to access it, you can come across numerous errors. Here are some of the common error messages you can expect to see if you use a VPN to access Hulu:

“Hulu not available in your location.”

“Error playing this video. You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool.”

“We’re sorry, currently our video library can only be streamed within the United States.”

“Based on your IP address, we noticed you are trying to access Hulu through an anonymous proxy tool. Hulu is not currently available outside the US. If you’re in the US,  you’ll need to disable your anonymizer to access videos on Hulu.”

When I tried unblocking Hulu with Surfshark, I did encounter proxy errors multiple times until I was able to find the right server. If you’re also encountering proxy errors, you can try these fixes:

Solution #1: Try connecting to another Surfshark US server location.

Solution #2: Try switching protocols from OpenVPN to L2TP, and then PPTP to see which one works.

Solution #3: Clear your cache and browsing history through your preferred web browser.

Solution #4: Flush your DNS by accessing “Command Prompt” and then typing in ipconfig /flushdns > Enter.

If the above-mentioned solutions aren’t working for you, then I highly suggest contacting Surfshark’s live chat support team or checking out our Surfshark not working guide for troubleshooting tips.
