OneVPN Review 2018: A Service with Huge Potential

OneVPN is a relatively new VPN service which works under an IT security consultancy firm called Unravel Technologies. The organization is based in Hong Kong, which puts it an advantage as Hong Kong is one of the best places when it comes to Internet Freedom.

The founders of OneVPN strive to provide reliable internet security to its users and protect their sensitive data from any potential breaches. OneVPN provides several distinct features, but its overall service remains problematic.

In this OneVPN review, we will investigate whether this no-logs VPN service has the features to compete with the giants of the VPN market.

The Website – Aesthetic and User-Friendly

OpenVPN-Website

When you visit the website of OneVPN, you will first notice that the company advertises itself as “the world’s most secure VPN with best VPN features.” This is a big claim for an up-and-coming VPN service.

Nevertheless, our OneVPN review highlights that website itself is exceptionally well-designed and is easy to navigate. You will also found some useful information on the site about OneVPN’s different features and their pricing policy.

You can signup for OneVPN quite easily. Once you click the “Get Started” button on the main page, you are asked to select a payment plan, provide your name and email address and then finally, choose a payment method.

Once you have completed the payment method selection process, you can access the client area. Thus, you will receive an email guiding you to the Download page. There, you will have to select OneVPN client for either Windows, Mac or Andriod. After choosing your preferred client, you will be good to go.

OneVPN Important Features Review

OneVPN markets three of its features as its main strengths. These are:

  • Free Ad-Blocker
  • Malware Protection
  • NAT Firewall

After using, we were disappointed to find out that these features are not as effective as advertised. The ad-blocking was minimal at best with large number of ads still visible while the server was connected. And we are not the only one who faced this issue. While reading some other OneVPN reviews, we found out that other users had faced similar issues previously.

This factor also puts us in doubt over the Anti-Malware claims of OneVPN. From our experience, we can assume that OneVPN is marketing a single item as three separate features. This is because NAT Firewall itself provides ad-blocking and malware protection at a basic level.

There are others, somewhat impressive features provided by OneVPN. For instance, it offers 68 different server locations. The servers are sorted through an alphabetical order despite the client mentioning that they are ‘sorted by nearest’.

Pricing of OneVPN-Expensive or Affordable?

OneVPN-Price-and-Plans

Our OneVPN review discloses that the price of OneVPN varies according to the user’s subscription plan. Users can choose 1 month’s plan for $7.95, six-month plan for $4.99 a/month and a four year plan for $1 a/month. This means you can pay $48 to avail OneVPN’s service for four years.

These pricing plans are well suited for users who want to seek digital privacy but have financial limitations.

OneVPN Refund Policy Review

According to our OneVPN review, it offers a 7-day money back guarantee. You can avail the said feature if you are not satisfied with the performance. However, you cannot attain this refund if your data usage has exceeded the 3GB limit. While asking for refund- you are required to state a potent reason for your displeasure with the service.

Paying for OneVPN

Payment-Method

Subscribers can pay OneVPN through multiple channels. Our OneVPN review recommends that their payment options range from Credit Card, PayPal, Paymentwall to Alipay and Gift Card. Users who wish to maintain a level of anonymity can even opt for Bitcoin.

How Secure is OneVPN?

We have reviewed numerous VPNs and each one of them claims to uphold the privacy of its users by maintaining a no logs policy. But in many instances, this is not the case as the governments of the countries in which these VPN are based, mandate them to retain their user’s data.

Through our OneVPN review, we can affirm the company’s claim of maintaining a no logs policy as it is based in Hong Kong.  Hong Kong due to its special administrative status has little internet censorship and its cyber laws are designed only to restrict criminal activities. Therefore, OneVPN is not obligated by law to store its customer’s logs.

OneVPN, like other VPN services, provides shared IP addresses feature to its subscribers. This makes it difficult for others to trace your IP address back to you.

The Protocols to Use

According to our OneVPN review, it offers two known protocols like OpenVPN and PPTP. As other VPN connoisseurs will tell you, it is much safer to use OpenVPN. This is because there are concerns about PPTP protocol’s encryption that can be broken hassle-free.

OpenVPN, on the other hand, supports a 256-bit SSL connection regarded as a military-grade encryption. In addition, it does not have any known security flaws.

OneVPN Performance Review

Interestingly, you can assume its superior speed as one the most impressive features of OneVPN. We tested its multiple servers and the results were simply remarkable. On an eight mbps connection, a US server provided download speed of 6.64. Compared to this, the speed on our local server remained at 7 mbps.

Some of the other US servers provided similar download speeds but the connection started to slow down once we moved on to some of the European servers. Still, one can easily say that speed is one of the strong suits of OneVPN.

Our Experience Browsing and Streaming On OneVPN

Our OneVPN review reveals that web browsing on OneVPN server is somewhat a pleasant experience. We faced no issues in streaming HD videos since the buffering was minimal. However, there was little to no ad blocking which is surprising as this feature is highly marketed on OneVPN’s website.

Customer Support – Efficient but Far from Perfect

The knowledgebase section on OneVPN’s website contains concise answers to user’s queries. It also features a section, which filters information based on devices, operating systems and protocols. Even though the information and guides provided here are extremely useful, we think they are a bit hard to find.

The FAQs on the page offers answers rather concisely. Still, there are links provided to more detailed blogs and articles. For us, the stand out feature of the knowledgebase is the video tutorial. These tutorials provide step-by-step guide about OneVPN connection on Andriod, OneVPN configuration through PPTP protocol and other such issues.

We must confess that this OneVPN review would have been difficult to write if we had not attained the assistance of different video guides. They were of a great help to us whilst we are setting up ONEVPN for our system.

24/7 Live Chat

OneVPN advertises 24/7 live support on its website but the chat option is often offline. In addition, the support is mostly efficient if you require some basic guidance regarding the VPN service. The more technical queries are mostly answered in a day through an email.

Using OneVPN on Android

To write a more complete review of OneVPN, we had to test this service on our android device. The app is available on the Google Store and is easy to operate.

Interestingly, OneVPN offers a free 7 days trial version on its android app – a feature that is not available for its windows client.

Perhaps, OneVPN should consider offering a trial to Windows users too just to give them idea of what they are in for. The money back guarantee for PC users comes with too many stipulations and isn’t as appealing as a free trial.

OneVPN Servers Review

There are others, somewhat impressive features provided by OneVPN. For instance, it offers 68 different server locations. The servers are sorted through an alphabetical order despite the client mentioning that they are ‘sorted by nearest’. OneVPN provides more than 390 servers from 59 countries. The fastest of these connections are from United States and Canada.

OneVPN Logging Policy Review-How much Secure Is OneVPN?

We have reviewed numerous VPNs and each one of them claims to uphold the privacy of its users by maintaining a no logs policy. But in many instances, this is not the case as the governments of the countries in which these VPN are based, mandate them to retain their user’s data.

Fortunately, in this OneVPN review, we can affirm the company’s claim of maintaining a no logs policy as it is based in Hong Kong. Hong Kong due to its special administrative status has little internet censorship and its cyber laws are designed only to restrict criminal activities. Therefore, OneVPN is not obligated by law to store its customer’s logs.

In addition, OneVPN privacy policy states that it does not maintain any activity logs nor does it keeps a record of session logs.

OneVPN Privacy Policy Review

OneVPN offers two known protocols in OpenVPN and PPTP. As other VPN connoisseurs will tell you, it much safer to use OpenVPN. This is because there are concerns about PPTP protocol’s encryption which can be broken with tools that are widely available.

OpenVPN, on the other hand, supports a 256-bit SSL connection which regarded military-grade. And as of yet, it does not have any known security flaws. OneVPN, like other VPN services, provides shared IP addresses. This makes it difficult for others to trace your IP address back to you.

OneVPN Privacy Policy Review

According to our OneVPN Review, the service offers a clear-cut privacy policy for users. Moreover, OneVPN categorically states on its website that it protect its subscribers’ data at any cost. Likewise, it does not share personal information of its users with third parties and other entities.

Apart from storing users’ name and their email addresses, OneVPN follows the concept of online anonymity in true letter and spirit.

Final Verdict OneVPN Review

We realize that this OneVPN review might seem a bit skeptical.  We thought it would be appropriate to evaluate it as per such standard. Nevertheless, we believe this VPN application has much to offer despite its innumerable shortcomings.

OneVPN offers fast servers – you are not likely to find such speed even on many popular VPNs. It also offers adequate anonymity feature through OpenVPN encryption and shared IP addresses. Still, there is much more to be done.

OneVPN can do itself a great favor by abstaining from advertising feature they simply do not offer. To be precise, we believe they would be better off doing away with the whole ad-block and anti-malware bit. Another aspect in which they need to improve is there customer support. The 24/7 chat option should be 24 hours if it is being marketed as such.

Overall, OneVPN has lots of potential but it still has a long way to go before it can swim with the big fishes of the VPN industry.
