FrootVPN-Review

FrootVPN claims to be a top-tier VPN that provides excellent service and security at affordable costs. In this FrootVPN review in New Zealand, you will know why this VPN is worth buying. So let’s find out!

FrootVPN was established in 2014 in Seychelles and now comes under the jurisdiction of Sweden. It has 150+ servers in 31 countries and respects users’ privacy by not storing any logs.

Furthermore, with the VPN’s robust torrenting/P2P technology, the business was famously advertised on the torrenting website The Pirate Bay.

Its long-standing dedication to enabling P2P downloads is responsible for the remarkable torrenting/P2P network.

Furthermore, with its low pricing, it offers the strongest encryption that doesn’t leak IP and works great while torrenting. It has average server speed and doesn’t unblock Netflix though, but streaming isn’t the only factor people use a VPN.

Other VPNs such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN work great for streaming if you’d like to try them. Therefore, we highly recommend reading our blog to learn more about these VPNs.

Also, it does not have dedicated apps for each platform, but it does tell you how to install FrootVPN manually.

Our team has spent 160+ hours by putting different VPNs into a rigorous testing phase, and selected the top VPNs for our users. So that they don’t face any barrier while using the VPNs. Before we go further, have a look at our popular VPN reviews to know which one is best for you.

Security – Is FrootVPN Safe to Use in New Zealand?

Yes, as per our findings in this FrootVPN review in New Zealand, FrootVPN is safe to use in New Zealand. It uses 2048-bit encryption that keeps your internet traffic encrypted in a private tunnel. So users shouldn’t have to worry about their data being stolen. However, there are valid concerns regarding the actual encryption technique used by the providers. It’s also important to note that FrootVPN hasn’t made any audit data available in a long time.

Additionally, its service offers the PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) key, which offers cryptographic privacy and authentication for data transfer (messaging, email, etc.).

FrootVPN also has the latest tunnelling protocols to protect the online activity of users. The three encryption protocols include OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP.

FrootVPN has included a mix of the fastest & highly secure tunnelling protocols in order to deliver premium satisfaction to users with differing needs.

Leaks – Does it leak IP, DNS & WebRTC?

FrootVPN passed all the leaks. It didn’t leak our original IP, so it means it will not risk your online identity.

We connected to the FrootVPNs US server and did the following leak test. Have a look at the results:

Does FrootVPN keep logs?

FrootVPN has a clear-cut privacy policy. It does not store your connection logs nor does it store usage logs.

It does not maintain a log of timestamps, source, and destination IP addresses, DNS queries, and log sessions of its subscribers. However, FrootVPN records only the following information about the users:

  • Username
  • Password
  • Email address

FrootVPN needs to record the above credentials to provide you access to its VPN servers. In case a subscriber forgets his username or password, the email address is utilized to recover the account.

Check for VPNs that don’t store any logs.

Server Network of FrootVPN

FrootVPN offers 150 servers across 31 countries, including 6 servers in the United States alone. The VPN also provides servers in locations that are missed by other VPNs, such as China, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Brazil. FrootVPN used to claim to offer servers in Russia, however, we didn’t find the Russia server on the location list. FrootVPN also says that P2p support is available on all of its servers.

VPN service providers use obfuscated server technology to bypass the toughest internet restrictions of countries such as China and Russia.

On FrootVPN’s server page, they also mention which server currently has a heavy load so you can shift to another server that has the lightest load.

Jurisdiction – Where is FrootVPN located?

FrootVPN is headquartered in Sweden, which is a member of the Fourteen Eyes alliance. These 14 countries have various arrangements in place to share and gather intelligence. Although Sweden is not as bad for privacy as the US or the UK, the chance of your data being shared throughout the 14 countries is not ideal if you want absolute privacy.

Speed – How fast is FrootVPN?

The average FrootVPN download speed is 14 Mbps across all locations and times tested. We connected to one of its fastest servers indeed with a low load and still saw a downward spike.

We connected to one of its US servers. Before that, our internet speed without FrootVPN was 52.73 Mbps.

speed-before-frootvpn (1)

When we connected to FrootVPN US servers, the download speed went down to 12.32 Mbps. Here is the result of the test:

frootVPN-speed-us (1)

We recorded these FrootVPN speeds on its US servers.

As you can see, there is a speed decline of 76.64%.

We ran the FrootVPN speed test on different servers including North America, Asia, and Europe, and experienced a speed decrease in comparison with our today’s base speed connection. However, you will probably notice the difference right away using these servers if your connection isn’t too slow.

Next, we used its OpenVPN protocol over UDP to carry out our speed testing. At first, we were unaware that FrootVPN supported WireGuard at the time. After knowing we enabled WireGuard through the oh-so-complicated setup procedure and managed to get it operating. Unluckily, this method didn’t increase the speeds.

Speed is always at the top of any VPN user’s priority list. All of us desire protection and privacy, but we also want to obtain the most value possible from our ISP connection. VPN companies must make extra efforts to speed up their networks. With FrootVPN review in New Zealand, it doesn’t appear to be the case. Streaming – Does FrootVPN Work with Netflix in New Zealand?

Yes, FrootVPN works fine with US Netflix in New Zealand. It offers servers located in different locations which makes it easier for the service provider to bypass the extreme VPN restrictions of Netflix.

In our test, we checked all FrootVPN servers and surprisingly each of them was able to bypass geo-blocks for Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video. Unblocking US Netflix is quite simple with FrootVPN, This is quite helpful for users who travel a lot.

However, not working with streaming websites like Disney+, Hulu and BBC iPlayer could be a deal breaker for many customers.

Since they claimed to have specific servers for Netflix and BBC iPlayer, iPlayer did not operate with its UK servers.

We also made an effort to get in touch with FrootVPN’s customer support team to learn how their VPN software interacted with streaming services like BBC iPlayer, Kodi, and ESPN but after three days of waiting, we still did not get any response from them.

Is FrootVPN good for torrenting in New Zealand?

Luckily, you can accomplish your media streaming cravings through FrootVPN in New Zealand. It has optimized P2P servers that keep you anonymous while you download torrents.

It also hides your original IP so which makes it impossible for other people to track your real location.

Installation of App and Easy of Use

FrootVPN relies on you manually entering the necessary information into your operating system settings and connecting that way because it lacks a local client to interface with. OpenVPN connections on Windows 10 are a little more convenient, however, FrootVPN doesn’t allow OpenVPN connections on Windows 8.1.

You can use OpenVPN by using the configuration files for FrootVPN’s servers and following the guide links. Instead of using the FrootVPN connection by default, you can choose to utilize these configuration files. Users of Mac, Linux, and Android devices may find this useful.

Also to download the FrootVPN Android app you need to first install the OpenVPN app for Android from the Google Play store. Next, you need to follow this long and complicated guideline from their website.

You need to download this app on your devices to use FrootVPN Android App

Although the company offer an installation guide to help you through the procedure, we still don’t like the difficult procedure. First, you had to set up the OpenVPN programme, download the configuration files for the FrootVPN server you wanted to connect to, and then copy those files into the OpenVPN folder. Once completed, the OpenVPN client does not make the laborious procedure any easier.

It’s important to know that FrootVPN’s platform support varies. For instance, FrootVPN supports iOS, OS X, Windows 10, Windows 7, and Windows Vista, as well as the OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP protocols. You will be forced to use the subpar PPTP if your computer is running Linux or Windows 8. That’s not very good.

Compatibility – Apps and Supported Devices

FrootVPN is compatible with all devices that run Windows, Unix/Linux, Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, and Android. However, they do not have dedicated apps for different platforms which makes it very difficult for users to download a separate protocol on their devices as we found out in this FrootVPN review in New Zealand. You can also make your home router compatible with it so long as it supports VPN connections.

Bypass Web Censorship

Although FrootVPN claims to bypass any restrictions, filters, and firewalls set by network administrators it’s unclear if users in China are able to access this VPN service to bypass censorship. However, FrootVPN has servers there but it’s challenging to say because only specific VPNs operate in China due to the country’s internet regulations which are constantly evolving and becoming more complex.

Customer Support

FrootVPNs customer support is just average. It has only two mediums for customer support i.e. Support Ticket and Knowledgebase.

When you click on the Support Ticket, you will have to enter your Email, Subject, and Description. It has a response time of 24 hours which is not impressive.

We thought why not give it a try so we ask a question using their chat option.

And in response, we get a message that they will reach out to us via email.

Even after 24 hours, our queries about the matter of FrootVPN’s router compatibility have not yet received a response.
