Berlin, January 2, 2025-A data breach at Volkswagen exposed the location of 800K EV drivers, raising concerns over unencrypted storage and rekindling debates about automotive cybersecurity.
In a shocking cybersecurity lapse, a Volkswagen software subsidiary exposed sensitive location data of over 800,000 electric vehicle (EV) drivers. The breach, discovered by a whistleblower and confirmed by the Chaos Computer Club, allowed easy access to unencrypted data stored on Amazon cloud servers.
The leaked data included precise locations where vehicles were turned on or off, affecting models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi e-tron. This egregious oversight exposed politicians, business leaders, and even law enforcement personnel to potential tracking.
German politicians Nadja Weippert and Markus Grübel voluntarily participated in the investigation, confirming the vulnerability. A cybersecurity analyst Tobias Braun said:

Volkswagen’s software arm, Cariad, patched the breach after being notified. Despite assurances that no evidence suggests the data was exploited, the damage to public trust is undeniable. A Volkswagen spokesperson said:
