Washington D.C., December 12, 2024 – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden demands sweeping cybersecurity mandates for telecoms after the Salt Typhoon hack exposed critical flaws, endangering national security.
In a bold move to counter rising cyber threats, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) has introduced legislation mandating minimum cybersecurity standards for U.S. telecom carriers.
The initiative, sparked by the alarming Salt Typhoon hack, aims to secure America’s communications infrastructure against foreign spies and hackers.
The Secure American Communications Act, if passed, will compel the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enforce stringent rules protecting telecom systems.
The urgency comes in the wake of revelations that Chinese hackers infiltrated U.S. networks, intercepting sensitive calls and messages from top political figures, including President-elect Donald Trump.
Wyden blasted the FCC for its failure to protect Americans,” accusing it of letting telecom companies write their own rules.” He declared:
It was inevitable that foreign hackers would burrow deep into American communications systems when the FCC turned a blind eye. Congress must act now.
The legislation outlines robust measures, including mandatory system audits, independent compliance assessments, and annual security tests. Collaborating with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the FCC will have a year to devise specific protocols to thwart unauthorized interception.
