Kyiv, August 22, 2024 – Ukrainian hackers hijacked Russian TV channels to broadcast war footage, disrupting prime-time programming and showcasing the stark realities of the conflict.

In a daring cyber operation, Ukrainian hackers from the military intelligence agency (HUR) managed to infiltrate Russian television networks, broadcasting unfiltered war footage directly into Russian households. This audacious act disrupted prime-time programming on multiple Russian TV channels, replacing scheduled content with videos that vividly depicted the harsh realities of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The hack targeted several prominent Russian TV channels, including Pervouralsk TV, Eurasia 360, and Pervyi Kanal, some owned by Russian oligarch Andrey Komarov. The footage aired showed scenes of Ukrainian soldiers in combat and Russian casualties, accompanied by a voiceover in Russian highlighting the losses suffered by Russian forces.

This unexpected broadcast caught many Russian viewers off guard and forced the channels to suspend their services temporarily. A spokesperson for Pervouralsk TV on the VKontakte social network stated:

This cyberattack is part of a broader digital warfare strategy employed by both sides throughout the conflict. The Ukrainian hackers’ ability to breach and take over Russian television signals is a testament to their growing cyber capabilities. It also sends a powerful message about the reach and impact of Ukraine’s cyber operations.

These broadcasts are a form of psychological warfare,” said a cybersecurity expert monitoring the situation. By bringing the realities of war into Russian homes, Ukraine is challenging the Kremlin’s control over the narrative.”
