In a controversial move, the Trump administration has disbanded the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB), halting its investigation into the China-linked Salt Typhoon hacking group. The decision also dissolved other key advisory committees under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including the AI Safety and Security Board.
Salt Typhoon, a state-backed cyber threat, has been implicated in a series of critical breaches targeting U.S. telecommunications. The now-terminated CSRB, established under the Biden administration, was actively reviewing the hacks when its work was abruptly ended.
Benjamine Huffman, acting DHS secretary, justified the move, stating:
This decision aligns with our commitment to eliminating resource misuse and refocusing on national security priorities.
However, critics warn that this could leave the nation vulnerable to escalating cyber threats. Brian Fox, CTO of Sonatype said:
This disbandment removes a critical security blanket. Without federal guidance, sophisticated state-backed hackers have a much easier path into U.S. networks.
Experts argue that the CSRB played a pivotal role in investigating high-profile incidents, including the 2023 Microsoft Exchange Online breach. Cybersecurity leaders fear that losing such resources will embolden threat actors like Salt Typhoon.
