Towson, MD – February 6, 2025-Towson students now face mandatory Duo MFA logins, adding security but increasing frustration. Some praise the protection, others call it an inconvenience.
Towson University students are bracing for a major shift as Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) becomes mandatory, adding extra steps to logging in. What was once a simple password entry is now a multi-step process, sparking frustration across campus.
The cybersecurity measure, which officially rolls out on February 18, requires students to verify logins through their mobile devices every time they access their accounts. While faculty and staff have used Duo MFA since 2017, students are now facing the same security barrier, and not everyone is thrilled.
Jordan Matthews, a junior at Towson said:
This is just another hassle. I understand security is important, but now I have to fumble with my phone just to check an email?
The Office of Technology Services (OTS) claims the move is essential to protect students from cyber threats. Patrick Rohe, Towson’s Chief Technology Officer, defended the rollout, stating:
Hackers are getting smarter. This extra layer of security is necessary to keep student data safe.
Currently, over 5,300 students are already using Duo, with 120+ reports of login issues in recent months. Some students fear the new system could lead to lockouts or disruptions, especially for those without immediate phone access.
Freshmen entering in Fall 2024 and beyond will automatically enroll, while existing students must adapt by April. With growing concerns over phishing attacks and data breaches, universities nationwide are enforcing stricter security. But at Towson, students are left wondering—is security worth the struggle?
