Toronto, March 4, 2025 – A cyberattack on Toronto Zoo leaked visitor and membership data from 2000-2023 and erased critical conservation research. Victims are warned of potential phishing threats.
The Toronto Zoo has confirmed a devastating cyberattack that exposed visitor data, membership records, and even wiped out decades of vital wildlife research. The breach, which occurred in early January 2024, was only recently revealed to have a far-reaching impact, with personal details and transaction records appearing on the dark web.
The compromised data includes:
- Names, addresses, emails, and phone numbers of visitors and members.
- Credit card details (last four digits & expiration dates) of transactions from 2022-2023.
- Decades of wildlife research essential for conservation efforts.
Although the zoo claims the stolen data is of limited sensitivity,” experts urge affected individuals to be cautious of phishing attempts and identity fraud. A cybersecurity expert Kevin Beaumont warned:
Leaked customer data is a ticking time bomb, hackers often use it months later for fraud or ransom.
Beyond the breach of visitor information, the most devastating impact was the loss of crucial research on endangered species, a setback for global conservation efforts. A distraught conservation scientist at the zoo said:
Years of data on breeding, animal behavior, and species health gone.
The Toronto Zoo has notified authorities and partnered with the City of Toronto’s cybersecurity team to prevent future attacks.
