El Paso, TX – January 23, 2025-A cyberattack on Tornillo ISD exposed sensitive student and teacher data, prompting PowerSchool to tighten security and parents to demand greater accountability.
The Tornillo Independent School District (TISD) is reeling from a cybersecurity breach that exposed sensitive information about students and teachers. Hackers exploited a compromised login to gain access to PowerSchool’s systems, the district’s provider of student information services, affecting servers across Texas, the U.S., and Canada.
The breach, which occurred in December 2023, allowed unauthorized access to names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and educational records. A TISD spokesperson said:
Protecting our students and staff is our top priority. We are working closely with PowerSchool to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
PowerSchool assured the public that the incident has been contained. “We found no evidence of malware or ongoing unauthorized activity,” the company said, adding that they’ve partnered with CyberSteward, a third-party cybersecurity firm, to investigate and secure the affected systems.
Despite these reassurances, concerns linger among parents and educators. Cybersecurity analysts emphasize the growing risk of attacks targeting educational institutions. an industry expert explained.
