Washington D.C., December 13, 2024 – CISA declares SolarWinds gaps closed, enabling real-time threat detection across federal networks. However, emerging cyber threats keep agencies on high alert.
Four years after the devastating SolarWinds cyberattack, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has announced a significant breakthrough: federal agencies have closed critical security gaps that left networks vulnerable to hackers.
This marks a pivotal moment in the U.S. government’s cyber defense strategy. Jeff Greene, CISA’s Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity, explained:
We’ve addressed the exact weaknesses exploited in the SolarWinds breach. Today, we can detect and respond to incidents in minutes, not days.
The 2020 attack, linked to Russian hackers, infiltrated nine federal agencies, exposing the government’s inability to correlate threats across systems.
CISA’s enhanced security measures include monitoring over 5 million devices across 94 agencies through its Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) program.
The agency also added 400,000 logs to track vulnerabilities and implemented centralized Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) systems. Greene emphasized:
We now have real-time visibility across networks, a capability we lacked during SolarWinds.
These advancements stem from a 2021 cybersecurity executive order by President Biden, which mandated cross-agency data sharing, improved log retention, and robust threat hunting. Experts praise the progress but caution vigilance. Kiersten Todt, former CISA Chief of Staff said:
Cyber threats evolve daily, and closing gaps is an ongoing process.
Despite the victory over SolarWinds vulnerabilities, emerging threats like China-linked Salt Typhoon” attacks on critical infrastructure underline the stakes. Federal cybersecurity teams are actively addressing these challenges, reinforcing the importance of continued innovation.
