New York City – November 19, 2024-Snowflake hack exposes 110M AT&T records, extorts $2.5M in Bitcoin ransom. Data breach highlights rising cloud vulnerabilities and urgent need for reforms.

In a shocking cybercrime case, two hackers have been charged for their roles in the Snowflake data breach, which exposed 110 million AT&T records and extracted a staggering $2.5 million ransom in Bitcoin. This breach, one of the most sophisticated in recent years, has reignited concerns over the vulnerabilities of cloud platforms.

The accused, Connor Moucka from Canada and John Binns from Turkey, allegedly exploited Snowflake’s cloud analytics platform to infiltrate AT&T’s systems, accessing billions of call and text records.

Prosecutors revealed the duo’s attack, codenamed “Erised,” as a calculated operation that included extortion threats against corporations, resulting in multi-million-dollar payouts.

The stolen data did not include message content but comprised critical metadata, such as caller identities and timestamps. Compounding the breach, sensitive personal data like Social Security numbers and banking details was also compromised for several corporate clients using Snowflake.

Between November 2023 and October 2024, the hackers reportedly extorted payments from three victims, demanding ransoms in Bitcoin. According to cloud security statistics, data breaches involving cloud platforms have surged by 45%, underscoring the need for enhanced security protocols.

With states like New York, Texas, and California heavily impacted, the fallout from the Snowflake breach is expected to grow. Cybersecurity experts are urging businesses to bolster their defenses to prevent similar incidents.
