The Singing River Health System (SRHS) suffered a severe ransomware attack by Rhysida in 2023, affecting its operations across three hospitals and over ten clinics on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. According to the sources, the incident caused significant disruptions in critical services such as laboratory and radiology testing.

The initial impact of the cyberattack was reported to have affected 252,890 individuals. However, a recent update to the Maine Attorney General revealed that the number of affected individuals has escalated dramatically to 895,000.

As the second largest employer in the region, with about 3,800 staff, SRHS experienced substantial IT system outages, leading to the need for manually processing lab tests and radiology exams.

The compromised data includes sensitive information such as names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical details, and health insurance data. In response to the breach, SRHS has taken steps to mitigate the impact on those affected.

The health system offers one year of free credit monitoring services through IDX identity theft protection and has issued guidance on preventing identity theft and fraud. This includes advice on reporting suspicious activities, placing fraud alerts, securing against tax fraud, and how to obtain free credit reports.

SRHS continues to urge all impacted individuals to remain vigilant by closely monitoring their account statements and credit reports and reporting any instances of identity theft or fraud to the Federal Trade Commission, their state Attorney General, and local law enforcement.

In light of the recent ransomware attack on Singing River Health System, organizations must enhance their cybersecurity measures. Utilizing the best VPN services can provide an additional layer of security, encrypting data transfers and reducing the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive information.
