SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio, January 9, 2025 – Shaker Heights Schools suffered a major data breach via PowerSchool, exposing student and staff data. Cybersecurity measures are under review, and protections are offered.
In a shocking cyberattack, Shaker Heights Schools fell victim to a devastating data breach, potentially compromising sensitive information of students and staff. The incident, linked to PowerSchool, a widely used cloud-based educational software, has left parents and educators on edge.
The breach was discovered on December 28, 2024, when a compromised PowerSchool support account was used to access its Student Information System (SIS). The affected data reportedly includes personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, addresses, and parent or guardian details.
While the district assures that Social Security numbers were not stored in the system, some health and academic records might have been accessed. A Shaker Heights School District spokesperson said:
Protecting our students’ privacy is a top priority, and this breach is deeply troubling. We are committed to working closely with PowerSchool to ensure such incidents don’t happen again.
PowerSchool has claimed to have secured the system and engaged cybersecurity experts, including CrowdStrike, to investigate. The company stated it has received “reasonable assurances” from the hacker that the stolen data has been deleted. However, this reassurance has done little to ease the concerns of affected families.
This attack highlights the vulnerabilities of digital education systems. Schools must adopt stronger measures to protect sensitive data.
In response, PowerSchool is offering credit monitoring services for adults and identity protection for minors to mitigate potential risks. Shaker Heights officials have pledged to keep the community informed as new details emerge.
