Washington, December 6, 2024 – Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon targets global leaders’ metadata in a massive espionage campaign. Sensitive details exposed; U.S. demands global cybersecurity reform.

A global espionage crisis has surfaced as the Salt Typhoon hacking group, allegedly linked to China, orchestrates a sweeping metadata heist. U.S. officials have revealed that these cybercriminals targeted telecom giants and key infrastructure worldwide, exposing sensitive communications of global leaders and senior officials.

Anne Neuberger, Deputy National Security Advisor, said:

While the content of calls remains secure, metadata—details such as call duration, locations, and contacts—was accessed. Experts warn that even without content, metadata can map intricate aspects of someone’s personal, professional, and political life.

At least eight major U.S. telecom firms, including Verizon and T-Mobile, were targeted, alongside dozens of global telecom networks. A senior U.S. official added:

The Chinese embassy in Washington dismissed these claims as baseless, labeling them as “cybersecurity slander.” However, the scale of the breach has sparked fears over global cybersecurity gaps.

This attack follows similar hacking accusations in October involving prominent U.S. political figures. With a Senate hearing scheduled on December 11, the global community demands stronger cybersecurity measures and accountability.
