Bucharest, November 12, 2024Kill Security hacks Romania’s National Institute of Administration, stealing sensitive government and citizen data.

In a brazen cyberattack, the Kill Security hacking group has claimed responsibility for breaching Romania’s National Institute of Administration. The group reportedly exfiltrated a wealth of sensitive information, including personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, CNPs (Romanian Personal Numeric Codes), emails, and phone numbers, along with confidential financial details related to payments and tariffs.

The hackers have issued a ransom demand, setting a deadline of November 20, 2024, for payment, warning that the data could be leaked if their demands are not met. A cybersecurity analyst Andrei Toma said:

Kill Security’s assault on Romania’s administrative hub highlights a troubling trend in ransomware attacks targeting government agencies. In addition to citizen data, the breach reportedly includes confidential information about government programs, training schedules, and institutional email accounts, potentially jeopardizing not only personal data but also Romania’s administrative operations.

The National Institute of Administration has yet to release an official statement on the incident, while cybersecurity experts urge immediate action to mitigate further damage. Authorities have been advised to investigate Kill Security’s methods and work toward restoring security and public trust.
