January 22, 2025-Richmond University Medical Center faces a lawsuit after a 2023 data breach exposed over 674,000 records. Plaintiffs accuse the hospital of negligence and delayed disclosure.
Richmond University Medical Center is under fire after a massive data breach exposed the sensitive personal information of over 674,000 individuals. A federal class-action lawsuit was filed this week, accusing the New York-based healthcare provider of negligent security practices and failing to notify victims promptly.
The breach, discovered in May 2023, compromised patients’ private details, including Social Security numbers, medical records, and insurance information.
Plaintiffs allege that Richmond violated key regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Federal Trade Commission Act, by not implementing sufficient cybersecurity measures.
Edward Quinn, one of the lead plaintiffs, stated:
Richmond’s negligence has caused irreparable harm. They had a duty to protect our personal data and failed us all.
Adding to the controversy, Richmond reportedly delayed informing affected individuals by more than a year and a half, leaving them vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.
Cybersecurity experts are warning this breach is part of a growing trend in healthcare cyberattacks. A leading cybersecurity analyst noted:
Medical institutions are prime targets for hackers. These organizations must prioritize security to prevent such catastrophic breaches.
The lawsuit seeks damages for the victims, holding Richmond accountable for the significant risks and distress caused by the breach.
