Providence, December 31, 2024 –Sensitive data of 650,000 Rhode Islanders, including minors, is leaked on the dark web in a massive data breach. Immediate precautions are advised.

A catastrophic data breach in Rhode Island has escalated to terrifying new heights as hackers leaked sensitive personal data of 650,000 individuals—including minors—onto the dark web.

The stolen data originates from the RIBridges system, which supports essential programs like Medicaid and SNAP.

Alarmingly, this includes Social Security numbers, bank details, and private information of children who were beneficiaries of these programs.

The cybercriminal group Brain Cipher is behind this breach. Cybersecurity experts warn this is a grave threat to vulnerable populations. Crystal Morin, a cybersecurity strategist said:

The stolen files have surfaced on dark web platforms, triggering fears of identity theft and financial fraud. Deloitte, a partner in managing RIBridges, is collaborating with state officials to analyze the extent of the leak.

Governor Dan McKee has urged residents to take immediate action, stating:

Officials recommend five key steps: freezing credit reports, monitoring credit activity, enabling multi-factor authentication, and remaining alert against phishing scams. Parents are also advised to secure their children’s credit by contacting credit agencies.
