Providence, RI, December 16, 2024 –RI’s benefits system was hacked, exposing sensitive data. Victims face long waits on an overwhelmed hotline as they scramble to secure their finances.
Rhode Island residents are reeling after a massive data breach targeted the state’s human services system, compromising sensitive personal and financial data of benefit recipients.
Hackers infiltrated the Deloitte-managed RI Bridges system, exposing Social Security numbers, banking details, and even access to EBT funds.
In response, state officials launched a hotline to assist victims, but frustration is mounting as callers face long wait times and limited support.
I waited over an hour only to get basic advice I’d already read online.
Reports indicate delays of up to 60 minutes to connect with representatives.
The breach affects those who applied for or received benefits from programs like Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, and Rhode Island Works. Officials have urged residents to freeze credit and EBT cards to safeguard funds. But for many, like Providence resident James Johnson, that’s not a feasible option.
Freezing my EBT card is a luxury I can’t afford. Those benefits are how I feed my family.
Governor Dan McKee addressed the issue during a press briefing, stating:
We’re working tirelessly to address this breach and protect Rhode Islanders. We understand the frustration and are expanding hotline services.
While the emergency call center is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., many victims are left wondering if their concerns will ever be resolved. The hotline (833-918-6603) offers assistance in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
