St. Louis, January 6, 2025 – A ransomware attack on Ascension Living exposes data of 6M senior care residents and employees. Sensitive information surfaces on the dark web, sparking nationwide concern.
A chilling ransomware attack has rocked the senior living community, exposing sensitive personal data of six million individuals connected to Ascension Living.
The nonprofit healthcare network, which operates senior care facilities and hospice services, revealed that a May 8 cyberattack had far-reaching consequences, leaving residents and employees scrambling to protect their identities.
The stolen data includes medical records, payment details, Social Security numbers, and even passport information, according to Ascension’s statement. Free credit monitoring and identity protection services have been offered to those affected, but the damage might already be done.
cybersecurity expert Mary Collins said:
This is not just a breach; it's a violation of trust. Senior care facilities must double down on their defenses to prevent further tragedies.
The investigation uncovered that some of the compromised files had already surfaced on the dark web, intensifying fears of fraud and identity theft. With healthcare cyberattacks on the rise, this incident highlights the vulnerabilities in safeguarding sensitive information.
Ascension Living is just one of many victims in a growing wave of cybercrime. Rhode Island recently faced a similar breach that exposed state Medicaid and long-term care data. Governor Dan McKee said:
We cannot underestimate the devastating impact of such attacks. This is a wake-up call.
Authorities urge affected individuals to monitor credit activity, activate fraud alerts, and remain vigilant against phishing attempts.
