Prizm Media, Inc., a digital marketing company for healthcare providers, has reported a massive data breach exposing 23,469 health records in Washington state, sparking concerns over the safety of sensitive medical data.
Prizm Media confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed an employee’s email account between April 2023 and July 2024, compromising emails containing names, dates of birth, health insurance numbers, and medical information.
A cybersecurity expert from Black Duck Software Inc warned:
This breach exposes thousands to potential identity theft and medical fraud.
The company, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, disclosed the breach to the Washington Attorney General on January 30, 2025, after concluding its investigation in September 2024. Victims were notified via letters detailing the compromised data.
Prizm Media, known for connecting consumers with healthcare services, now faces backlash over the handling of patient data. Eric Schwake, cybersecurity strategist at Salt Security Inc said:
Healthcare data is a prime target for hackers, and breaches like this underline the need for stronger protections.
This breach adds to the growing list of healthcare data breaches, with experts urging companies to adopt robust cybersecurity measures like multi-factor authentication, encryption, and regular security audits.
