New York, NY – November 21, 2024-A phishing gang stole millions in cryptocurrency via fake SMS scams targeting corporate employees. Victims unwittingly provided credentials to counterfeit sites.
A sophisticated phishing gang has been dismantled after stealing millions in cryptocurrency through a cunning SMS-based scam. The operation, which targeted employees of U.S. companies, exploited fake text messages to harvest sensitive data, enabling unauthorized access to company systems and personal cryptocurrency accounts.
According to court documents, the scam was executed between September 2021 and April 2023. The perpetrators, posing as trusted IT service providers, sent text messages warning victims of impending account deactivations.
These messages redirected users to counterfeit websites designed to mimic legitimate company portals, where employees unknowingly provided their credentials. FBI Assistant Director Akil stated:
With just one click, these criminals gained access to valuable systems, leading to massive financial losses.
The gang, comprising five individuals aged 20 to 25, infiltrated corporate networks to steal confidential information and drain cryptocurrency wallets. Among the accused is Ahmed Hossam Eldin Elbadawy from Texas, while Tyler Buchanan, a UK resident, also faces serious charges.
This case highlights how phishing has evolved from a mere nuisance to a global cybercrime epidemic. These criminals exploited trust and technology to devastate victims financially.
The stolen cryptocurrency, often difficult to trace, adds complexity to the investigation. The FBI, in collaboration with Police Scotland and other agencies, is working to recover the stolen assets.
