In a chilling escalation of cybercrime, the notorious NodeStealer malware has resurfaced with more advanced techniques, targeting Facebook Ads Manager accounts and stealing sensitive credit card data. This malicious campaign, attributed to Vietnamese cybercriminals, marks a dangerous fusion of financial theft and digital advertising hijacking.
Security researcher Jan Michael Alcantara from Netskope Threat Labs revealed:
The attackers use Facebook Ads budgets as a gateway to malvertising, leveraging stolen credit card information to amplify their malware campaigns.
NodeStealer’s evolution includes exploiting the Windows Restart Manager to unlock browser database files, collecting cookies, and dynamically generating Python scripts to execute the theft.
Since its exposure by Meta in 2023, NodeStealer has shifted from JavaScript to a Python-based attack arsenal. This updated version uses Facebook Graph API to extract token data, allowing attackers to infiltrate business accounts and siphon financial resources.
